sadaboutlife · 07/11/2019 20:36

For of us sharing a car.
3 hour journey there
3 hour back
She says it will cost £120 petrol
So charging £30 each
Do you think that's correct ?

JenniferM1989 · 07/11/2019 21:06

My car would do that journey on about £40 of diesel 😂

Hanab · 07/11/2019 21:08

She is taking the &£( .. however ...

She may be adding the cost of wear and tear and possibly insurance 🤷🏻‍♀️

Joerev · 07/11/2019 21:08

Jesus. I have the 4x4 Porsche Cayenne and it wouldn’t cost that to refuel. Friend has the Maserati 4x4. Which is a fuel guzzler and at most it would be £100. But no way would she make us pay. Or if we did she would ask us for like £10. I would only ask for whatever it cost to fill the tank up. I wouldn’t factor in wear and tear on one journey. Who does that?!?!

Notnownotneverever · 07/11/2019 21:10

I think you should be splitting the petrol bill by 3 not 4. The driver should not have to pay as they are doing 6 hours of driving for you all.
Perhaps her car costs £90 to fill up.

cannycat20 · 07/11/2019 21:10

£120 in a Citroen C1? They're pretty economical, aren't they? I almost bought one (bought a Renault instead, it had more boot space). It costs us about £60-ish for a full tank of fuel (1.5 litre engine), and that will take us about 550 miles-ish (from the north of the West Country to the Scottish borders). Though we usually fill up half way, the car likes having a full tummy.

Have a look at fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.html which suggests even at 96.9p per gallon and a fuel economy of 35mpg (and I'm fairly sure she'll be getting more to the gallon than that unless you're stuck in nose-to-tail traffic and there are hills the whole way), then it estimates a 400 mile journey is about £50. Also maybe look at www.petrolprices.com for the cheapest fuel in the area.

INeedNewShoes · 07/11/2019 21:11

The petrol cost in my small car for 3-400 miles would be £50-65.

She’s obviously charging on top of petrol.

Seems CF to me especially if you’ve driven them on a longer journey and only asked for £10!

mummmy2017 · 07/11/2019 21:12

If she has the money get her to top up when you leave and a second top up when you return, and split the bill of the 2nd top up when you get home.

ElleDubloo · 07/11/2019 21:13

My workplace gives me 28p per mile, which factors in wear and tear. I think it’s fair.

Buyitinbamboo · 07/11/2019 21:14

I have a C1. Costs about £50 to fill (live in an expensive are), I think it might just do that trip on a full tank. I'd probably say £60/70 to be safe.

Dowser · 07/11/2019 21:14

For, I’d be happy with £30
Someone willing to ferry you about For 6 hours

Try paying for a taxi

AliceLittle · 07/11/2019 21:15

69mpg at £1.40 per Lt for 400miles = £66

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/11/2019 21:16

It sounds pricy to me, I'm sure there is a website somewhere that works it out.

How much do others charge when they drive?

switcharoo · 07/11/2019 21:17

Can you suggest swinging by petrol station before you set off and you directly pay for the fuel when she fills up. She's definitely overcharging you hit then again driving for 6 hours is a big effort while you all get to sit there

WhatchaMaCalllit · 07/11/2019 21:17

Find out how much it would cost to hire a car for the trip. Then she can make the trip in her car by herself and the other three can cover the cost of the hire car between them, or if the cost of a hire car is less than she is considering charging you, approach her again and let her know that she is taking the piss.

"It is an offence to overcharge for lifts..."

In cloud-cuckoo land perhaps grin

Wrong.

Chloemol · 07/11/2019 21:17

SO on hmrc rates 400 miles is £180. It’s not just petrol is it though, she is putting mileage and wear and tear of the car carrying four people, and she is driving. You have a choice, pay, or make your own way there

timeisnotaline · 07/11/2019 21:17

You would just say oh have we all been undercharging? Good to know! And get the others to say it too. She will net be down after a couple of trips instead of the profit she had in mind.

RedDiamond · 07/11/2019 21:17

She's a clever person. If she charges you too much this time, you might not be inclined to ask her to drive next time!... Grin Win, win for her! Cheap lifts always and no aggro of doing the actual driving or wear and tear on her car.

IncrediblySadToo · 07/11/2019 21:19

Utterly ridiculous

Tell her to start with a full tank then fill it when you get back - split the cost.

Legoandloldolls · 07/11/2019 21:21

My petrol MPV does 380 miles for about £75 but could go further on clear motorways. DHs diesel MPV could do 600 miles on £60. Both seven seaters

Bubblysqueak · 07/11/2019 21:21

Way too much. I drive a qashqai, it has a 50 litre tank which is between £60-£70 depending on price which will do 520 miles ish.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/11/2019 21:24

Is she driving the whole distance? If so then yes she’s reasonable to charge whatever she wants.

TrainspottingWelsh · 07/11/2019 21:29

It does sound ott when wear and tear, driving etc aren't a consideration with you all taking turns. But I wouldn't assume that just because it's a C1 it will cost loads less than a bigger car.

It might use less fuel in a city with a light load, but with 4 occupants and on a motorway there will be a big difference. Plus if it's an old car it will be less efficient. Certainly, some of dsds friends with ancient tiny first cars and national speed country roads seem closer to mine in fuel consumption than they are to a modern tiny car on normal main roads.

Tunnocks34 · 07/11/2019 21:30

I have a Kia sportage and get 415 miles out of £70 worth of fuel. In my old KA I would have got 400 miles for £50

TokenGinger · 07/11/2019 21:30

All the people with the shirty responses saying get a taxi, to find an alternative etc., haven't you read the updates where she says they all take turns? So the three other friends charge fairly, and this one is deciding to take a tidy profit from her friends on her turn!
