To think friend is charging too much?

sadaboutlife · 07/11/2019 20:36

For of us sharing a car.
3 hour journey there
3 hour back
She says it will cost £120 petrol
So charging £30 each
Do you think that's correct ?

OP posts:
lljkk · 07/11/2019 22:12

400 miles * 30pence per mile.. actually, that's probably what WhatCar would say the true cost would be per mile (fuel + wear & tear).

I don't think £30 per person is unreasonable.

Pinkyyy · 07/11/2019 22:15

She's charging double. Tell her she's a CF and you're making your own way.

Pandora73 · 07/11/2019 22:20

I drive a 2.2litre 4x4 and get about 240 miles out of your £30, which would average a 4 hour journey. So on that theory 6 hours car journey would cost me £45-£50 tops.

In a Citroen C1 id guess £30-£35. She’s making a right profit.

basicbitch16 · 07/11/2019 22:20

My car drinks petrol & that mileage would be a full tank for me - £60.

goingtotown · 07/11/2019 22:23

It doesn’t matter how much she spends on fuel. £30 is a reasonable amount for that journey. If you feel like she’s ripping you off make your own way there.

CoastalWave · 07/11/2019 22:24

Hmm. For petrol yes, she's overcharging you.

But in fairness, she may be on a mileage allowance. If I do over 9000 a year I will get charged. So she's probably just covering for that.

TriciaH87 · 07/11/2019 22:26

I can get from where I live to my home town 130 miles away and back on £40 so she's scanning you all to get out of paying any herself. I suggest going to petrol station together asking for receipt note where fule gage was when got there. Tank the car up split the cost 4 ways then if need to fill up again on the journey back factor in how much further to go and put enough in to cover that and leave what was in the tank before hand

Doidoit19 · 07/11/2019 22:27

We drove to southampton from Yorkshire a few weeks ago in a 2 litre insignia. Approx 500 miles in all, cost us £55. She's definitely overcharging.

feelingfree17 · 07/11/2019 22:28

You can on line to calculate the exact cost. Enter the make of car and journey details and it will calculate the cost

basicbitch16 · 07/11/2019 22:30

@CoastalWave But if that's the case, you would say 'in my car, I'll need to cover excess mileage, the cost will be X per person, or would anyone else rather drive to save money?'

Whoops75 · 07/11/2019 22:31

She’s driving for 6 hours while ye google & snooze and you’re not happy!

Driving is hard and a Citroen C1 isn’t a luxury drive, so I think YABU

basicbitch16 · 07/11/2019 22:33

But @Whoops75 OPs friend is happy to pay OP £10 for the same journey. CF.

m00rfarm · 07/11/2019 22:33

You a re nearly all CF. She has bought the car, maintained it, insured it, serviced it - based on the number of miles she does. Why do you think companies give between 30 and 45p per mile. It is to cover costs (of which the fuel is probably the least expensive part). My son drives all his friends around and only splits the fuel with them - it is driving me mad as his insurance is based on the number of miles he does, and it costs him around 500 per 1000 to top it up as he is a relatively new driver. If they are driving, then pay towards the proper cost of the miles and not just the fuel.

RoseMartha · 07/11/2019 22:36

Do you usually split petrol costs as you mention you take turns to drive?

I would suggest you all give £20

And chip in if you have to pay to park.

cstaff · 07/11/2019 22:36

Jesus she is taking the piss with her own friends. It sounds like 10 or 15 a head would do the job. As for wear and tear fucking hell - this is a friend we are talking about. Also the fact that you all use your cars on different occasions, that shouldn't even be an issue.

Tell her that this is not a work / money making trip. She is just trying it on.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 07/11/2019 22:37

Assuming she asked for that amount via text I would send back
🤪 ha! You wrote £ 120 oops! you ment £12 each right? 🤞

BackforGood · 07/11/2019 22:39

YANBU at all. She's being ridiculous.
As you all take turns to drive and all only ask each other for 1/4 of the fuel costs, then she should do exactly the same.
At the moment, she is clearly at least doubling, but likely more than trebling what she is spending in asking for £30 from all of you.

what kind of 'friend' does that ? Hmm

ClassicFlourescent · 07/11/2019 22:40

I drive a Peugeot 108 which is v similar. I'd expect that journey to cost under 50 quid

ButtonMoonLoon · 07/11/2019 22:41

I suggest you use this site as a guide, it’s usually pretty close to what the actual costs add up to!

www.rac.co.uk/route-planner/mileage-calculator/

ElinoristhenewEnid · 07/11/2019 22:44

My ford fiesta 998 would do 400 miles on about £40 -£45 of petrol

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 07/11/2019 22:51

Wear and tear?? I obviously live in an alternative universe, as I have never in my life charged friends for a lift, never mind factoring in all the other costs!! When you go round each other's houses how much do you charge for a coffee? Or a biscuit? Fair enough chipping in for petrol/ diesel if people want to (personally I'd prefer my mates to pay for my meal/ few drinks), especially if you all take turns, but seems a bit mercenary to me to charge so much!

BumbleBeee69 · 07/11/2019 22:52

She's AT it OP. Flowers

bionicnemonic · 07/11/2019 22:54

If she is charging you and making a profit I would have thought she will need special insurance as that would technically make it a hire vehicle or taxi?

Cal72 · 07/11/2019 22:56

Well, she is charging you £30 for a 6 hour journey. Fair enough.

Explain that you didn’t realise you were all meant to be charging fuel plus depreciation - but that you’re good with that.

You drove 8 hours to Edinburgh and back. So that’s £40.

She’s paid you £10 of that already.

So she owes you £30.

And you will owe her £30.

Cancels itself out nicely. No need to pay her anything.

bellabasset · 07/11/2019 23:00

I have a Renault Twingo and I average 50mpg. It's not big enough for 4 though

If you take turns driving then you should all split the charge the same way, either petrol or so much a mile per person. What would be fair is for the 3 passengers to pay petrol in full.
