Jeremy Corbyn - PM by default?

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 09:20

I am not a 'woke' labour supporter. I come from a long line of many generations of stout labour supporters. It would be unthinkable up to now in my family for anyone to vote for any other party. I would be shown the door at my gp's house for even having this conversation.

However, I am seriously seriously worried, I would go as far as to say terrified of the prospect of voting for Labour this time, and Jeremy Corbyn actually becoming Prime Minister.
I am interested to know how others are dealing with this problem.

I am worried that some of the policies such as seizing assets and homes from people, massive taxes etc. We are home owners and work very hard, it could all be jeopardised.

Forced closure of private schools in this area would be a complete and utter disaster. As it is we have to finish early on Friday afternoons, and do not have funds for every day stationary much less hundreds of extra children. What would happen to our already very full classes of 33-38 with all the extra children from the private schools? How is this even possible? And yet it seems Labour are fully committed to it when pressed on the issue.

The huge privatisation plan of utilities looks to cost around 200 billion pounds. I don't want our money spent this way! I would much prefer better schools and hospitals, and crime to be under control in this part of the country. I can't even get a GP app for my asthmatic dd at the moment. I could not care less about the Utilities or the railways etc. The LP just do not seem to understand at the moment what matters to most people.

The whole defence and nuclear issue. I don't feel we live in a particularly safe world. I like the fact we have some defences against the nut jobs in the Middle East or North Korea. The fact that other countries would not trust the UK under Corbyn to share intelligence with us, and his lack of decision making in a crisis, or even his basic understanding of deterrents is deeply disturbing.

I just don't think Corbyn is up to the job in any shape or form. Nor do most of the party.

I have thought about voting Lib Dems, but looking at the numbers that will almost certainly result in Corbyn being PM. There is almost no chance at all of Lib Dems getting 326 seats. A vote for Lib Dems is a vote for a Labour government probably propped up by the SNP who will demand another independence referendum in six months.

I am livid with the party for allowing this to happen, how is Corbyn still the leader of the party it is beyond me. How has this been allowed to happen? Chuka Umunna would have made an excellent PM, but all the best candidates are leaving the Labour party.

I don't think I can vote for anyone. That is my final conclusion, for the first time in thirty years I will not vote. What are you planning to do?

You're absolutely right OP - Corbyn's plans would destroy the country, but unfortunately he is rather appealing to the gullible and the spiteful. It's up to the rest of us to stop him seizing power.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 06/11/2019 12:30

Re me being a leftist hypocrite: my son has dyspraxia and epilepsy. His school is tiny. That’s what I pay for. It keeps him safe. If it was turned into a state school tomorrow, it’d still be tiny due to the building size and space around it. I wouldn’t have to pay fees anymore and I wouldn’t mind one bit.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:31

Jeremy, stop the nonsense about the schools, forget about privatising the utilities (no one anywhere cares about this) slow down the tax hikes so that you do drive all business out of the country over night, and start pledging to do what we have always supported:

Increasing benefits for those that are struggling
Promising to house every homeless person in the country
Scrap all university fees
Invest in our schools
Free around the clock meals for all children at school
Free holiday camps for children of lower income homes so they can eat well, and it offers parents support to work

This alone would get us a solid bedrock of support. Spending billions on a water company definitely won't! Not now, not ever.

Labour taxing people on £85k will mean an additioanl £20 per month for your tax bill.

Oh look, there’s that claim I mentioned. Except the figures are bullshit. The money that policy would raise (£4.5 billion Labour reckon) wouldn’t cover even their pledge to the NHS.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:31

don't drive business out

Mistlewoe

Plenty of kids at state school have dyspraxia and epilepsy. You are a hypocrite. What you want for your ds is what most private school parents want, a safe, nurturing environment.

Pigwee · 06/11/2019 12:32

Honestly. Who are these people that will leave the country in droves? Where will they go to given we are meant to be exiting the EU? Are you saying they will leave and go to Dubai, the US, Russia? Or mainland Europe if we do stay or they can relocate there in any case?

That is the sort of hysterical nonsense people always trot out. Yes some people will go. Most people will not. This is still a country that is better to live in compared to most. It is absolutely high time people paid more tax, businesses are forced to pay a living wage and we take care of the vulnerable, sick and disabled. Everyone in this country deserves a fair chance to make a decent living - at the moment that is at the expense of our poorest and most vulnerable. If your business cannot survive a living wage or paying a fair tax then it’s not a viable business model.

shearwater · 06/11/2019 12:32

The Gullible and Spiteful - plenty of those on the right unfortunately. It could practically be an alternative name for Tories and Brexit Party.

Rainbunny · 06/11/2019 12:33

Considermesometimes - I don't want to call her a liar but I just can't see her refusing to join a Labour coalition government if it's the only possible way to stop Brexit, she'd be plain stupid. Not least because there's apparently a chance that Corbyn will step down at some point win or lose the GE. She needs to play the long game. As I've said, my constituency is a toss up between the Labour and Lib Dem candidate and I'm leaning towards Lib Dem because the other reason I want them in a coalition government is the (remote I know) chance that they get to effect a change to our first past the post system and move us towards proportional representation. No voting system is perfect but the first past the post system we have here is clearly not fit for purpose, we desperately need a more collaborative form of governing.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:34

*Those that can will flee the country for a better life, private education and lower taxes will be leaving the country in droves, along with big business. These are the very people we need to pay for everything!

This is the very reason we need to stay in the EU so matters like tax loopholes for the rich can be closed on a continent-wide level*

Why would anyone assume they would simply go to the EU, I would imagine Switzerland would be a good choice, Asia and anywhere else that appeals.

OP posts:
Trewser · 06/11/2019 12:34

bangs head against wall charging the richest more tax won't raise shit.

If you want all this wondrous stuff YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! Anyone earning needs to pay more in income tax, and the tax free threshold should be lowered.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:37

Yes precisely! I could not agree more, so why are all these policies about privatising utilities etc. This is so very far from important as priorities go. Did Blair win over middle England by promising such things? No, he did so on the back of real changes that helped most people.

pig pick up the FT and read what business thinks about Corbyn and then come back and tell me there won't be a capital investment flight on day one. Why do you think so many moderates are leaving the labour party? It is fast becoming a lost cause.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2019 12:39

“ Yep, the bastards have only pledged record levels of NHS funding, 40 new hospitals and money for new scanners and equipment. The fuckers.“
Wait and see what’s in the manifesto. The 40 new hospitals appear already to have vanished from the slogans.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:40

So Bert you are back. Have you switched from Labour to Libdems? I think you have, and if so then why?

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 06/11/2019 12:43

“ Yes precisely! I could not agree more, so why are all these policies about privatising utilities etc”
Do you mean nationalising?

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2019 12:43

@Considermesometimes
No.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:44

I am politically homeless now thanks to Momentum, and with their ever increasingly ridiculous pledges. I have even had to name change on here because my SIL is also on MN and would think nothing of telling the family I have 'turned', and wrecking christmas in the process.

I ask you one thing, and be honest, hand on heart. Can you be absolutely sure Corbyn WONT activate these pledges, can you be absolutely sure that John won't simply take over the minute the election is over? Can you even be sure of the policies or the second referendum promised? Because I sure as hell can't be sure on any of this.

I want a labour party that I can actually vote for, I want our party back.

We can not go on like this.

Boris is a twat but he’s not an extremist anti-Semite

Just a common or garden islamophobe.

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:48

bert okay so what happens if Corbyn actually wins? Or are you betting that he won't? Or he will be hit by a meteorite the week before?
You are a very sensible and intelligent person, and I know you have misgivings about this too, even if you are not as vocal as me.

I have dyslexia, so have mixed nationalise and privatise, but I think you know what I mean.

Pigwee · 06/11/2019 12:48

Tbh the state things are in now, I would take any chance with any labour government. I would rather that than continue with what is already happening. Every day the tories who is who they are - JRM’s comments yesterday being one - and people still think they are the lesser evil. I would take my chances with anyone else now at this point in time so I will stick to labour regardless.

Pigwee · 06/11/2019 12:49

*tell us who they are

Trewser · 06/11/2019 12:49

Is he an islamaphobe? Or did he just criticise the niquab?

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 12:49

pig that is your choice, but it is a sad state of affairs when we are talking about the lesser of two evils, rather than feeling like we are voting for something better.
