Jeremy Corbyn - PM by default?

Considermesometimes · 06/11/2019 09:20

I am not a 'woke' labour supporter. I come from a long line of many generations of stout labour supporters. It would be unthinkable up to now in my family for anyone to vote for any other party. I would be shown the door at my gp's house for even having this conversation.

However, I am seriously seriously worried, I would go as far as to say terrified of the prospect of voting for Labour this time, and Jeremy Corbyn actually becoming Prime Minister.
I am interested to know how others are dealing with this problem.

I am worried that some of the policies such as seizing assets and homes from people, massive taxes etc. We are home owners and work very hard, it could all be jeopardised.

Forced closure of private schools in this area would be a complete and utter disaster. As it is we have to finish early on Friday afternoons, and do not have funds for every day stationary much less hundreds of extra children. What would happen to our already very full classes of 33-38 with all the extra children from the private schools? How is this even possible? And yet it seems Labour are fully committed to it when pressed on the issue.

The huge privatisation plan of utilities looks to cost around 200 billion pounds. I don't want our money spent this way! I would much prefer better schools and hospitals, and crime to be under control in this part of the country. I can't even get a GP app for my asthmatic dd at the moment. I could not care less about the Utilities or the railways etc. The LP just do not seem to understand at the moment what matters to most people.

The whole defence and nuclear issue. I don't feel we live in a particularly safe world. I like the fact we have some defences against the nut jobs in the Middle East or North Korea. The fact that other countries would not trust the UK under Corbyn to share intelligence with us, and his lack of decision making in a crisis, or even his basic understanding of deterrents is deeply disturbing.

I just don't think Corbyn is up to the job in any shape or form. Nor do most of the party.

I have thought about voting Lib Dems, but looking at the numbers that will almost certainly result in Corbyn being PM. There is almost no chance at all of Lib Dems getting 326 seats. A vote for Lib Dems is a vote for a Labour government probably propped up by the SNP who will demand another independence referendum in six months.

I am livid with the party for allowing this to happen, how is Corbyn still the leader of the party it is beyond me. How has this been allowed to happen? Chuka Umunna would have made an excellent PM, but all the best candidates are leaving the Labour party.

I don't think I can vote for anyone. That is my final conclusion, for the first time in thirty years I will not vote. What are you planning to do?

@CendrillonSings I suggest you go and talk to some NHS staff and see exactly how they are currently coping under this government.

Evenquieterlife33 · 06/11/2019 21:30

I don’t have any faith that the next lot will actually keep their word on any promises they make. I’m waiting to see what’s in the manifesto- I don’t know why. They can do what they like once they are in. I have no faith that women’s lives or rights will improve under a labour government. Especially as they love having biological males on their all women shortlists now. Labour for me at the moment are far to woke, I don’t like Corbyn, I don’t think he is remotely competent. But then Boris is just as bad a joke. My first Vote was as a student, I voted for Tony because he said he had no intention of introducing fees for higher education. Then he did the Cool Britannia lying wanker. None of them can prove they have a shred of decency until they are already in the job at which point they do what they like and we all have to put up with it.

Evenquieterlife33 · 06/11/2019 21:33

I won’t be voting conservative, the rest of them are absolutely insane. I will end up holding my nose and voting for labour. No faith in any of them though to actually improve anybody’s lot in real terms any time soon.

Charmlight · 06/11/2019 21:35

I’ve never voted Conservative, but I feel it’s the best option this time.
Jo Swinson isn’t experienced enough, Corbyn and McDonnell are rabble rousing trots who will bankrupt us and the Green Party are baking pies in the sky.
I will vote Labour when the leadership is more moderate/ changes for the better.

KayakingOnDown · 06/11/2019 21:44

Tom Watson is resigning.

The moderate wing of the Labour party is now almost completely eroded.

Hello Momentum, hello hard-left politics.

Janus · 06/11/2019 21:48

This is how much Tory’s value nhs

Jeremy Corbyn - PM by default?
littlebillie · 06/11/2019 21:52

Voting Conservative - labour under the current leadership is untenable

noblegiraffe · 06/11/2019 21:53

The moderate wing of the Labour party is now almost completely eroded.

Same for moderate Tories standing down in droves. Both parties are heading towards the extremes.

Labours policies concern me too. Conservatives have been in talks with the US, getting a good deal for some very important medicine for cystic fibrosis sufferers. It’s now been widely agreed that Labours policies would prevent us having access to this life saving medicine. Why?
Labour also admitted that Brexit will drag on even longer as they work to negotiate a new deal again, followed by a referendum based on their deal or remain. What a pointless waste of time.
Also, the party is too far left now. I class myself as Centre right, so they are not for me.

DBML · 06/11/2019 22:02

@Janus
They debunked this chart on the news earlier today. Spending on the NHS has risen, (though is still too low). However, it’s lowest ever was Actually under a labour government.

DBML · 06/11/2019 22:04

@PaperWhiteDaisy

I couldn’t agree more.

Janus · 06/11/2019 22:05

DBML
I didn’t know that. (Although I bet that labour Government was a long time ago??)

dontcallmeduck · 06/11/2019 22:07

I don’t vote based on the leader. All of the things in the OP have to be voted through. Unlikely. I can not vote Tory, as a public sector worker I have seen how austerity has hit.

SciFiRules · 06/11/2019 22:07

I'll be voting for the Lib Dems. I want a return to middle ground politics. Also I want to be clear on Brexit. I found it galling at the last election when obnoxious Torys stood up and said the majority voted for brexit supporting parties when at that time there were no major parties with a clear remain position. This time there is a party with a clear remain position and I hope we will see a clear remain mandate.

curlykaren · 06/11/2019 22:10

Oh my god!!?? It was literally JEREMY CORBYN himself who got the medicine for the cystic fibrosis patients. He was even on 'This Morning' with the Mum who had written to him PERSONALLY and spearheaded the campaign. It is fucking appalling how misinformed some of you are.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/11/2019 22:15

Both parties are heading towards the extremes

Indeed they are; this is what happens when extremism feeds itself and it's absolutely appalling

Mammyloveswine · 06/11/2019 22:22

I'm a teacher, labour supporter and will be voting for labour. I think Jeremy Corbyn is brilliant, much more suitable than the absolute buffoon that is boris Johnson...

DBML · 06/11/2019 22:26

@curlykaren

JC was involved when a little boy wrote to him after being ignored by Theresa May. I’m not saying JC hasn’t campaigned for the drug, but Matt Hancock was instrumental in making the deal, being secretary for the state for health and social care. So, no JC didn’t just go to American and make the deal. And that doesn’t change the fact that JC’s own policies would make having that drug impossible.

I don't usually go on Twatter, but couldn't resist this comment/image which some maniac posted ... let's just hope it was intended as irony

I find it extraordinary that private schools are in so many people’s top concerns about Labour’s policies

Probably because a lot of mumsnetters use private schools. I'm sanguine about it. I've got 5 years left of private school. If by any tiny chance Labour get into power abolishing private schools will be the least of their worries. And if they do, dd will go to the leafy comp 6th form, which will be amazing because all that private school cash Wink

noblegiraffe · 06/11/2019 23:30

I’m a teacher and I’m concerned about the Labour private school thing (if it makes the manifesto) because what it demonstrates is that Labour don’t have a fucking clue when it comes to the education system. ‘Oh we’re annoyed that the conservatives were all privately educated at Eton and have fucked up the country so we’re going to abolish Eton to spite them’ (the hashtag was AbolishEton). It’s not politics, it’s playground games.

State education is on a knife edge. It needs some serious rescuing and they’re going to fuck about with something that’s easing pressure on the system? Special education especially.

The rest of Labour’s education policies are bloody awful too.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 06/11/2019 23:34

Can I please ask why there are posts saying people are dying under the tories (120,000 was quoted back on 6-8) I can't stand the Tories, but I don't believe people are actually keeling over because they are in government. How anyone think they are?

2 seconds of research will give you endless examples.

MustardScreams · 07/11/2019 06:36

@noblegiraffe,I do t believer for one second a teacher is happy with a Tory government, you’d have to be certifiable.

Also more misinformation in your post! Labour themselves didn’t start the hashtag. What policies are you talking about? Their manifesto has not been released yet.
