BOYCOTT CADBURYS

whatpasswordtochoose · 03/11/2019 22:50

Most of us buy too many products containing palm oil. It is difficult to work out what is palm oil free, so, for all of you feeling guilty about buying products made with palm oil I would suggest this simple action plan...
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE BY CADBURYS.
There are so many other chocolate bars that you can buy so it really shouldn't be too painful.

OP posts:
ChocolateTeapot1 · 04/11/2019 08:13

I’ve stopped eating it anyway, it tastes horrible these days. I don’t know what they did to the recipe but it just has a funny taste.

leckford · 04/11/2019 08:15

I have boycotted them since they changed the recipe for their chocolate and it tastes crap!

Melliphant · 04/11/2019 08:17

It's possible to avoid palm oil with a dairy allergy (or for vegans) if you stop eating pastry, biscuits, nut spreads and some bread. It's possible, but understandably not desirable.

rainbowconfetti · 04/11/2019 08:20

So OP never did come back then?

EntropyRising · 04/11/2019 08:23

Just to echo what others have said, try to support sustainably-sourced palm oil.

There's a host of good charities devoted to reforesting, particularly orangutang habitats. Friends of Borneo, Wildlife Alliance, etc. Orangutang populations have actually stabilised, but of course deforestation sadly has not.

Jellybeansincognito · 04/11/2019 08:24

I find this issue really complex.
It’s not good to be using palm oil, no. It isn’t necessary, alternatives can be sought.

But it’s just not that simple.

I think a more pressing issue is our carbon footprint.

shinynewapple · 04/11/2019 08:25

Cadbury's is still a massive employer within the Bournville area of Birmingham. It was bad enough when Kraft took over and went back and on their word about retaining production there . It would be devastating to the community if it did close down.

Please don't single out Cadbury's.

catspyjamas123 · 04/11/2019 08:30

Never mind the palm oil. Cadbury’s owner Kraft advertises on PornHub. Good enough reason for me to boycott. Although I do love chocolate....

StepAwayFromGoogle · 04/11/2019 08:31

Don't be a nob, OP, and post about something you clearly know NOTHING about. You need to be buying products containing RSPO palm oil, not avoiding palm oil altogether. Most UK supermarkets are 100% RSPO certified across all own-brand food products. Palm oil is the world's most efficient oil - switching to another oil will require more land to produce at a time when we can't afford to use more of the earth's surface to produce food. If you really give a crap about deforestation and global warming then become vegan and don't have any children.

EntropyRising · 04/11/2019 08:32

Chocolate does seem to carry a lot of ethical hazards.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2019 08:33

Try nut butters like almond by Meridian if you need something- and no palm oil.

Or Sweet Freedom Choc Pot. A layer of almond or hazelnut butter with a bit of this on top is very nice.

Frazzledbutcalm · 04/11/2019 08:39

Come back OP and explain your stupid bizarre comment ......

ONLY Cadbury?? What rival company do you work for???

Kazzyhoward · 04/11/2019 08:41

There are so many other chocolate bars that you can buy so it really shouldn't be too painful.

So tell us which manufacturers don't use palm oil

cannycat20 · 04/11/2019 08:43

@OhTheRoses I take your point on Rowntree, although it was sold in 1988. I'm pretty sure the original founder (born 1862) had shuffled off this mortal coil by then. My comment about the Quaker founders wasn't just to do with the takeovers, or Cadbury lying about selling out their workers in Bath/moving production overseas a few years ago before the deal was done (who could have seen that coming, eh), but the fact that back in the day they used to be companies who cared about their workers, to the extent of providing housing and education. And now their workers are completely expendable.

@ScreamingLadySutch interesting that you've found Lindt to not contain palm oil as last time I looked at the ingredients in our local Co-op (I had a bit of time to spare), palm oil was definitely listed. They were one of the companies that surprised me.

The way it's going we'll all be subsisting on a diet of plain water and plain porridge before long as they'll be the only things we'll still be able to eat and drink reasonably ethically....!

Another vote for Aldi, Tony Chocolonely (only recently discovered by this household - pricey but worth it) and a couple of the Safeway options as well. And as already mentioned, there are a handful of companies who claim to use sustainable palm oil (whatever that really means these days).

whatpasswordtochoose · 04/11/2019 08:44

This was the first post I have made to Mumsnet. It will also be my last I imagine due to the vitriol.
What a lot of nasty people on this board.
Obviously using other chocolate containing palm oil would be counterproductive. I thought people would realise that they would have to source RSPO palm oil products. It really isn't that hard when it comes to chocolate.
I will leave now as I have obviously made people extremely angry. I was only trying to help as Cadburys seems to be one of the WORST offenders.
Thank you to all those people who were rationally and kindly trying to help promote this thread. To those that just wanted a dig...go stuff your face with disgusting, unethical chocolate if that pleases you.
It really is NONE of my business.

What you said was your plan was simple-just boycott Cadburys. You shouldn’t be surprised posters have pulled you up on that.

cannycat20 · 04/11/2019 08:46

I meant founded 1862 for the Rowntree founder, by the way - he was born 1838.

whatpasswordtochoose · 04/11/2019 08:49

Stepawayfromgoogle.
What a shame you carry such hate in your life.
I bet you are a joy to be around.
Horrid person

OP posts:
CaptainMyCaptain · 04/11/2019 08:49

I've boycotted Cadbury's for years as it just tastes horrible. I don't eat a lot of chocolate but if I do I check the ingredients, it doesn't take long. Ditto cereal bars etc.

PigeonofDoom · 04/11/2019 08:55

Last time I checked, most of the chocolate in Aldi contained palm oil. The exception is their higher end moser Roth brand.

Melliphant · 04/11/2019 08:56

Yes, stepawayfromgoogle's comment was uncalled for - insulting, ignorant and would have been improved factually with a bit of googling.

BlouseAndSkirt · 04/11/2019 08:59

OP, did you read many threads before you posted?

MN is robust and people like facts and evidence.

Stay, change your user name, start a discussion thread about the merits of sustainable palm oil, which is something I am not familiar with, fir starters.

Be honest: your OP was a bit daft, lacking in facts, reasoning or persuasion!

But you can stay in safety.

SchadenfiendeUnmortified · 04/11/2019 09:25

I was devastated when I tasted their Rose's after the change

They are filth, now.

Of course, I believe the they are now owned by an American firm and America has no idea what chocolate should be like.

EmeraldShamrock · 04/11/2019 09:34

This was the first post I have made to Mumsnet. It will also be my last I imagine due to the vitriol

Jesus now you are really are acting the drama Lama.

If you can going to post asking posters to boycott a product you need more information, alternatives, you can't post let's boycott this product but the other 49 products in my trolley are containing palm oil.
Feel free to post but be prepared to answer questions and use facts in your statements.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/11/2019 09:38

I'm not sure about sustainable palm oil.

It's a bit like Manuka honey, there's a lot more sold than there is produced.

So I try to avoid the lot.

Cadbury's just tastes vile, but then so do KitKat and pretty much everything.
