BOYCOTT CADBURYS

Most of us buy too many products containing palm oil. It is difficult to work out what is palm oil free, so, for all of you feeling guilty about buying products made with palm oil I would suggest this simple action plan...
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE BY CADBURYS.
There are so many other chocolate bars that you can buy so it really shouldn't be too painful.

Nutella is another one I stopped buying when I realised it is almost 60% palm oil

That can't be true as the top ingredient is sugar.

megletthesecond · 04/11/2019 07:19

Waitrose have discontinued their own brand dark chocolate spread. It was the only one I could find that didn't contain palm oil.

We're going into winter a chocolate spread free household this year Sad.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2019 07:19

Didn't David Attenborough say to not boycott but to source sustainable palm oil products??

Yes, he did.

Not buying stuff with it in is not the answer - it won't bring back the forests.

AngusThermopyle · 04/11/2019 07:20

From Cadbury's own website they clearly have not stopped using palm oils/fats

Green and Blacks choc does not contain palm oil.

Cadbury’s stuff is revolting.

BikeRunSki · 04/11/2019 07:24

Boycotting palm oil - ultimately, ideally, it’s production would stop.

Supporting sustainable palm oil - will encourage the regeneration of habitats destroyed

SoupDragon · 04/11/2019 07:25

Waitrose have discontinued their own brand dark chocolate spread. It was the only one I could find that didn't contain palm oil.

I'm just browsing the chocolate spread aisle on Ocado and there are a few. Biona, Meridian, Tiptree, Gü, Sweet Freedom.... I think there were more but I stopped looking :)

Morgan12 · 04/11/2019 07:26

Aye cheers for that.

Do you boycott every product on the market that has been made unethically?

BikeRunSki · 04/11/2019 07:26

Waitrose have discontinued their own brand dark chocolate spread. It was the only one I could find that didn't contain palm oil.

Gu doesn’t, and widely available in mainstream supermarkets.

FlamingoAndJohn · 04/11/2019 07:28

Waitrose have discontinued their own brand dark chocolate spread. It was the only one I could find that didn't contain palm oil.

Just to echo others, Gü is the chap.

Flobbertybillop · 04/11/2019 07:33

@jayboi26
Yes it does

NewName73 · 04/11/2019 07:45

OP, are you also boycotting Shampoo & Shower gel as these are all made with palm oil too?

At least with chocolate we can read the label & see if it has palm oil in it or not. Which I already do.

What about all the biscuits, cakes etc with Palm oil in?

Why single out Cadburys? Unilever continues to use palm oil, although it has made big steps forward on other sustainability issues...

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 04/11/2019 07:46

Arnoldthecat

You should try what the US thinks is chocolate! Cadburys is nectar of the gods by comparison!

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 04/11/2019 07:47

Some Green and Blacks does have palm oil, some doesn't. Read the labels.

Greenwingmemories · 04/11/2019 07:49

It was not about greedy shareholders

Please can you explain to me how a public company can be taken over in a hostile takeover unless the shareholders sell their stock?

PulpPixie · 04/11/2019 07:50

OP

Come back and start a thread when you know what you’re talking about

BlouseAndSkirt · 04/11/2019 07:53

I am looking at the Jamie Oliver recipe for home made chocolate spread (it has hazelnuts). Looks super easy and much better than gunky palm oil spread.

NettleTea · 04/11/2019 07:59

discovered Gu chocolate hazelnut spread the other day. No palm oil. Absolutely delicious and cheaper than Nutella

Melliphant · 04/11/2019 08:02

What Boysey45 said. Kraft/Mondelez made a series of promises during the Cadbury takeover about where and how they'd make their chocolate, none of which they've kept. I haven't "boycotted" Cadbury in the last few years, I just haven't bought any of the rubbish they make. It's very easy. Green and Blacks is a bit trickier, but I've survived so far. No problem with singling Cadbury's out as "unfair". they're a high profile target to make the others take notice, and they didn't play fair in the takeover.

Palm oil is part of the problem. It can be a useful ingredient (though not in chocolate), and it can be sourced sustainably so I wouldn't boycott everything with it in (besides which, try finding a bar of soap for under £3), but the massive explosion in its use is permanently harming the planet. The dairy inductry may be far from perfect, but it's not killing off whole species. Thanks vegans with your bloody Greggs not-sausage rolls.

Lidl and Aldi both have plenty of chocolate without palm oil. The cheaper stuff isn't great, but it's no worse than Cadbury's, and the more expensive stuff is lovely. Strangely Lidl manage to make granola without palm oil, which everyone else seems to consider it vital - the lack of it doesn't make it taste any worse.

I personally don't see how the answer to this can be "YABU". I don't see how boycotting a large company whoever they are can be "unreasonable", in that you can happily try to do it with or without a good reason. Boycott away.

JinglingHellsBells · 04/11/2019 08:04

as others have said there is palm oil in lots of the products from biscuits to cooking spreads etc. some is from sustainable plantations, others not.

JinglingHellsBells · 04/11/2019 08:06

I've never bought or eaten chocolate spread in my life.

It's not a necessity you know.

Try nut butters like almond by Meridian if you need something- and no palm oil.

newnameagainagain · 04/11/2019 08:07

It's not possible to avoid palm oil with a dairy allergy- it's what is used as a substitute

Runssometimes · 04/11/2019 08:07

www.wwf.org.uk/updates/8-things-know-about-palm-oil

Here’s WWF’s statement on palm oil, just look for certified, sustainably grown palm oil containing products.

dannydyerismydad · 04/11/2019 08:11

In the West (in particular) we are conditioned into thinking snacking is normal.

Boycotting unnecessary junk is the way to cut back on reliance on palm oils and other vegetable oils. Crisps, biscuits, chocolate, cakes, sausage rolls, donuts, pasties. Mass produced junk food is destroying the planet.

Dongdingdong · 04/11/2019 08:13

YABU because the main alternative to Cadburys is Nestle and they are worse.

Well don’t buy either then Hmm It’s not that difficult.
