BOYCOTT CADBURYS

Most of us buy too many products containing palm oil. It is difficult to work out what is palm oil free, so, for all of you feeling guilty about buying products made with palm oil I would suggest this simple action plan...
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE BY CADBURYS.
There are so many other chocolate bars that you can buy so it really shouldn't be too painful.

Mixed feelings about this. Happy to boycott Cadbury, because let's face it their chocolate tastes like shit now they have changed the recipe.

However - palm oil is actually a very efficient crop. It isn't something we should be avoiding or boycotting altogether. However we do need to be campaigning for sustainable palm oil production. Have a look at the wwf website and others.

Piece in the Times today.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/this-orangutan-faces-extinction-while-we-grow-fat-on-kit-kats-j02fcxjnq?shareToken=7dc2e28acb87392e1a3ccbea5c857d9b

It's mostly in junk foods. Cut out palm oil and save orangutans, pounds and the NHS?

CactusAndCacti · 03/11/2019 23:12

I looked at spreads recently, and without spending a fortune (or indeed doing so) it was really hard to find one without palm oil in. (Want an alternative to butter)

Will still buy Cadbury though, wispas are one of the few things on ds's acceptable list (ASD)

DontCallMeShitley · 03/11/2019 23:13

I buy Tonys Chocolonely.

I read every label on anything I am about to buy. Vegetable oil is a suspect one, if it doesn't state what it is, I put it back. There are many other names for palm oil products, Google will give you a list.

Most bread contains palm oil (vegetable fat). Biscuits contain palm oil. You need to avoid those too. And Pringles, and many of the Christmas snacks. Pretty much everything from Greggs, and most things made with pastry unless it states all butter. Some peanut butter, Nutella has loads. Find alternatives, and if you shop at Lidl be aware that a lot of their stuff contains it, as does Asda.

I have noticed that a few items now contain rapeseed oil where it was previously palm oil. I check every single thing every time I shop, I am bloody sick of it.

Greenwingmemories · 03/11/2019 23:13

Agree that Cadbury's chocolate is now disgusting. And PP don't blame the people boycotting it if people lose their jobs, blame the greedy shareholders who sold out to the awful conglomerate who bought it and absolutely wrecked the company's products.

I try really hard not to buy chocolate with palm oil. It tastes gross anyway.

DontCallMeShitley · 03/11/2019 23:14

Sustainable is not a real thing when it comes to palm oil.

LavendarGreen · 03/11/2019 23:14

@whatpasswordtochoose

As has been said, loads of foodstuffs/chocolate has palm oil in it, not just Cadbury's chocolate.

So that fact, along with the fact I don't listen to randoms on the internet who I don't even know, means I will keep buying Cadburys... The Dairy Milk anyway. Roses are vile now. So is Milk Tray... Still enjoy Dairy Milk and Crunchie and Twirl.......... YUM! 😋

CactusAndCacti · 03/11/2019 23:17

I am not a vegetarian/vegan, nor do we have any allergies, I am not going to look at every label before I buy, I'm barely keeping my head above water as it is.

(I checked the spreads following the discussion on MN about Flora, and was idling some time away in Morrisons)

ShinyGiratina · 03/11/2019 23:18

I rarely buy Cadbury's these days purely because it's so disappointing to eat since the palm oil came in. No need to conciously boycott it Wink

C0c0L0c082746 · 03/11/2019 23:20

Rubber plants are grown where palm oil is grown
Will you stop using that too ?
If not palm oil or rubber, another cash crop will be grown

Ironic when Western countries have huge fields of wheat & other crops, where the forests have already been chopped down !

LaurieMarlow · 03/11/2019 23:20

It’s absolutely in your interests to boycott chocolate with palm oil in it because it tastes like shit.

It’s worth paying more for the good stuff.

Genevieva · 03/11/2019 23:21

I just don't buy much chocolate any more. I don't buy Green and Blacks because they are owned by Cadbury's, which is owned by Kraft, which is owned by Mondelez. They buy up smaller brands and ruin them because they don't take pride on the quality of the products or the values that underpinned them. Not all Green and Blacks is fair trade any longer.

Nutella is another one I stopped buying when I realised it is almost 60% palm oil. Not only is that extremely unethical, but it is disgusting.

user1473878824 · 03/11/2019 23:23

I agree with boycotting palm oil BUT sustainable palm oil is a thing, that brands use. And all the people up in arms about palm oil, you do know it’s listed as loads of other stuff? So you might think you’re doing orangutans a solid but actually you’re not. There is also an argument against boycotting it completely, and by this I mean sustainable palm oil, that leaves people starving and out of work so their only other option to stay alive is cutting the rainforest down for cattle etc. I am desperately trying to find the link I read about a year ago (Just to prove that it wasn’t a random website, it just wasn’t the Times front page today) that was actually really eye opening. I say all of this as someone who wants to cut palm oil out as much as possible!

Jaxhog · 03/11/2019 23:23

Why Cadbury's in particular? Surely most cheap chocolate makers use Palm Oil.

AwdBovril · 03/11/2019 23:25

I boycotted Cadburys years ago, on the basis that it tastes like chocolate flavoured oversweetened candle wax. However, I agree with PPs, just boycotting Cadburys isn't enough to deal with the palm oil issue unless a) people let them know why, & b) people also boycott other companies/products that use palm oil.

Saddler · 03/11/2019 23:25

No

fatulousatforty · 03/11/2019 23:25

Didn't David Attenborough say to not boycott but to source sustainable palm oil products??

user1473878824 · 03/11/2019 23:26

But also, while it isn’t right or okay, please remember that when we get on our very first world high horse, it can impact actually living people. I love orangutans. They’re just fucking great. I don’t want to see the population decimated. I also don’t want people living on the breadline in another country to die because of lack of work and money just because I care about animals.

RightYesButNo · 03/11/2019 23:26

Can you list some alternatives available when doing a regular shop? Ie that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg in Holland and barrats for!

YABU to single out one company or to say “buy palm oil free” without giving these alternatives; people have to be able to afford to buy oil free. This list includes oil free options at more realistic price points, including own brands at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Aldi: www.gardenandgreen.co.uk/palm-oil-free-chocolate/4594476718

Obviously, just have a care, as you can see, sometimes with a milk and dark chocolate option of the same thing, the milk will contain palm tree oil and the dark chocolate will not.

placemats · 03/11/2019 23:27

YANBU.

Think before you buy those crackers for Christmas also. Most contain palm oil.

I'm baking my own this Christmas.

user1473878824 · 03/11/2019 23:27

@Genevieva I tweeted about this recently. They came back and said they used sustainable palm oil.

user1473878824 · 03/11/2019 23:28

@Genevieva sorry, to be clear, nestle use sustainable palm oil.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 03/11/2019 23:30

Palm oil is in fucking EVERYTHING.
(I agree with you that we should be reducing our consumption, by the way!)
Just curious as to why you're singling Cadbury's out.
We try and avoid palm oil as much as we can.
It's in random biscuits and shampoo and everything though, not just Cadburys chocolate.

You are being unreasonable for shouting
Oh and this lol

Jux · 03/11/2019 23:30

Funnily enough, that was a business model followed byM&S at one time - which led to a 15 year + boycott from me - and having only just started using them again, I am boycotting them again, over changing rooms this time.

Anyway, I remember speaking rather passionately about the M&S business model to my sFIL, who said "it sounds like rather a good business model to me". How I despised that man (rip notwithstanding).

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 03/11/2019 23:32

Maybe just don't buy chocolate? It's not like anybody needs chocolate, lets be honest.
