BOYCOTT CADBURYS

Most of us buy too many products containing palm oil. It is difficult to work out what is palm oil free, so, for all of you feeling guilty about buying products made with palm oil I would suggest this simple action plan...
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE BY CADBURYS.
There are so many other chocolate bars that you can buy so it really shouldn't be too painful.

The big brands all say they use sustainable palm oil, but there are doubts about the certification, according to the Sunday times piece I linked to upthread.

spanglydangly · 03/11/2019 23:35

Maybe just don't buy chocolate? It's not like anybody needs chocolate, lets be honest.

Oh the simplicity of it all....... why should I not buy chocolate because I don't NEED it, I don't need wine, I don't need meat, i don't need sparkling water, I don't need jam, I don't need fish.....

But I like these things,so not needing is quite irrelevant!

If we only ate what we needed, what a dull life.....

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/11/2019 23:38

Vegetable oil is a suspect one, if it doesn't state what it is, I put it back.

I believe they have to state if it is palm oil now. So anything that says vegetable oil should be not palm oil.

JenniferM1989 · 03/11/2019 23:42

How many of these threads are going to appear and for people to know what they're actually talking about to say that avoiding palm oil or boycotting it isn't going to do nada for the issue. If we boycott palm oil, we'll just need to deforest 5x the amount of areas to make sunflower or rapeseed oil instead. It's being looked into, there's measures in place to stop rogues using the tropical forests to plant the trees so just make sure you buy certified or responsibly sourced instead of boycotting

Individually contacting companies can help, as well. I've done this in the past - a couple of years ago with Clarks, about their woeful selection of girls shoes (specifically the lack of closed topped winter school shoes for primary aged girls). I was told there was "insufficient demand" for closed topped shoes, & replied that if they sold them, parents would surely buy them, & referred them to a MN thread. I'm sure other people contacted them, too. They now sell closed topped winter shoes. However, in the meantime, I discovered better brands elsewhere & haven't been back.

Palm oil does seem to be in so many things now. We used to use vegetable suet, but switched back to beef suet a few years ago because the veg suet all contain palm oil. Just for example.

rainbowconfetti · 03/11/2019 23:43

OP, perhaps you could explain why you want us to do this?

Zippyx · 03/11/2019 23:44

I hate chocolate anyway so easy peasy!!

ErrolTheDragon · 03/11/2019 23:47

Palm oil does seem to be in so many things now.

I think one reason is that it's being used in a lot of products now instead of hydrogenated oils containing trans fats. (Eg spreads like flora)

AutumnalLeaves38 · 03/11/2019 23:48

A Terry’s chocolate orange is now a thing of horror.

A Terry's chocolate orange was, is and always will be a thing of horror.

"It's not Terry's, it's mine"
Well, Dawn French in the ad, you're flipping welcome to it!

crustycrab · 03/11/2019 23:49

"Tis one ingredient!"

With many names.

Inebriati · 03/11/2019 23:57

Its not just palm oil thats a problem, its all monocrops.
Cocoa is produced using child labour, slave labour, and trafficked children.
The major chocolate manufacturers (Hershey, Nestle, and Mars) all agreed to stop using slave labour and they have all gone back on that promise.

danadas · 03/11/2019 23:58

I must admit, I never check the labels of anything I buy - it just gets thrown in the trolley. However, I thought we weren't supposed to boycott palm oil because that causes more problems? I can't remember now, but I am sure Chester Zoo posted something along those lines on social media.

SunshineAngel · 04/11/2019 00:01

Do you know what? If you want to make a point, you can research the subject and then come back to us with proper information.

What is unreasonable is that you come here telling us what to do. You do NOT get to tell me, or anyone else on here, what to do.

Why single out Cadbury's? Weird.

pooboobsleeprepeat · 04/11/2019 00:02

So you’re fine with cow breast milk but not palm oil??? Have you looked into the dairy industry? It’s a lot more harrowing than palm oil!

Genevieva · 04/11/2019 00:08

@whatpasswordtochoose

I have read mixed things about sustainable palm oil. Also, on a non-environmental note, palm oil is not something I want to spread on my toast. Perhaps irrational, because I love butter, but I just think the idea of a spoonful of palm oil and sugar is a bit grim.

OhTheRoses · 04/11/2019 00:09

If you would like others to follow your requests have you thought about using a not too difficult word - please?

Genevieva · 04/11/2019 00:09

That Washington post article is shocking.

BobLobLawLLB · 04/11/2019 00:10

Agree pooboo

Genevieva · 04/11/2019 00:12

@danadas please do. If nothing else, please look for the bunny that tells you a product is not tested on animals. It is shocking how many shampoos etc are still tested on animals.

Hedgehogblues · 04/11/2019 00:12

Just buy less stuff generally

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 04/11/2019 00:12

*A Terry's chocolate orange was, is and always will be a thing of horror.
*

Shock A Terry's chocolate orange is Christmas, not horror, what you on about?! Grin
dontalltalkatonce · 04/11/2019 00:15

Nope, no way. Not going fucking vegan or giving up my car (I cannot afford a hybrid or electric one and need a car for work - no, cannot cycle) or swearing off leather or any other form of asceticism. Not a chance (I'm now too old to have children but have 3).

Mothership4two · 04/11/2019 00:45

I tend to buy Divine chocolate, no palm oil and it's Fair Trade too, but you pay more to be ethical obvs. I buy it for £2.10 for a 90g bar.

The Ethical Consumer website is quite good for checking shopping. See www.ethicalconsumer.org/. This is from their website regarding chocolate suppliers:-

These companies are palm oil free: Chocolaterie Robert, Pacari, Moo Free, Madécasse, Divine, Booja Booja, Seed and Bean, Montezuma, and the Raw Chocolate Company.

These companies got our best rating for their palm oil policies, but are not palm oil free: Vivani, Plamil, M&S, Mars, Waitrose and Windmill Organics (Biona).

These companies scored our worst rating for their palm oil policies:
Hershey's Nestle Mondelez (Cadbury, Green and Blacks)

Arnoldthecat · 04/11/2019 01:00

Cadbury is sickly rubbish anyway, mostly vegetable oil and very little cocoa mass,,cheap, over sweetened sickly rubbish and doesnt deserve to be described as chocolate

Gingaaarghpussy · 04/11/2019 01:04

I don't do chocolate so it ain't a problem for me. Although I am devastated to learn that bournville dark choc is Cadburys
