Men sat in women's changing rooms

AIBU to get annoyed with women who plop their (male) SOs on the stools/seating in changing rooms?

Yesterday I needed the store assistant to help me with the back of a dress - on the way out of the changing rooms I realised my bare back had basically been exposed to a random bloke sat at the entrance. I know the shop assistant probably could have been more discreet but aibu to think they could sit somewhere else?

OP posts:

No WotchaTalkinBoutWillis, inside the entrance.

Boysey45 · 03/11/2019 12:59

My friend used to work in M and S mens trouser section and she said that loads of men came in wanting her to measure their inside legs etc for trouser length. She said that there was no need she could give them their size by looking at them.

Rezie · 03/11/2019 13:00

I dislike shops where members of the opposite sex are banned from the area.

nitgel · 03/11/2019 13:01

I agree with the op.

God I hope you're young because you will need all your energy to fight our corner.
I'm old now and so tired of having fought all my life for equality and here we are right back in the dark ages where women don't matter a shit. It's insidious, evil, and creeps upon us so slowly that every little crossing of boundaries goes unnoticed and here we are in 2019 and women are slowly being sidelined and our boundaries demolished without a second thought.

Many women's changing rooms have big mirrors and better lighting in the main part of the changing area outside the actual cubicles.

A lot of women, myself included, like to come out of the cubicle and use these facilities. I for one do not want to do so while some man I don't know is hanging around.

Why should women be made to feel uncomfortable in an area in which they getting semi clad because one man and his wife/partner want him there.

I like to feel relaxed when I'm out shopping for clothes. I don't want to have to watch out for random men in the changing area and I suspect most women feel the same.

zoflirter · 03/11/2019 13:03

I prefer this to having to walk out in to the main shopping area for an opinion

Goatinthegarden · 03/11/2019 13:04

I get why you feel uncomfortable, I really do, and I don’t take DH clothes shopping with me because he gets in the way and I much prefer my taste to his so don’t need his input,

But he likes me to go clothes shopping with him and hang around to give my opinion, so I’m generally the one who plonks myself on the available seat....which is usually in the doorway of the changing rooms. I must say, it’s never occurred to me to have a little spy on all the other men in there...

Ah OK, wasn't clear from I realised my bare back had basically been exposed to a random bloke sat at the entrance, read like was sat at the entrance and not inside it.
I'm not sure why someone would come out of the cubicle half done up in the first place if they were self conscious about being seen - personally I'd call over an assistant for help if there were any about or the person I was with.

GeorgianaDovesHouse · 03/11/2019 13:06

@Betty777

yes I am a grumpy and stressed Londoner

Being a Londoner has little to do with being grumpy and stressed. Others feel the same which is quite amazing.

Butterisbest · 03/11/2019 13:07

So,OP, you would have no problem with a woman’s female partner sitting there ready to gawp at other women? You are being inconsistent
I've reported your post for it's disgraceful homophobic content

Singled sex toilets are inconsistent then.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 03/11/2019 13:09

He was inside the changing room area

a random bloke sat at the entrance

This is why people are getting confused.
Make your mind up.

GeorgianaDovesHouse · 03/11/2019 13:10

I go to Gap Menswear or to John Lewis with OH and occasionally I might pop into the changing cubicle if he wants a second opinion. I have never considered checking out other guys while I’m there.

Having seen this thread, though, I think I should steer at least 6 feet clear of the entire area from now on.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 03/11/2019 13:11

I am also reporting that post. So sick of homophobes using lesbians as some kind of 'gotcha'. Lesbians don't commit 98% of sexual crimes, male people do.

GPatz · 03/11/2019 13:12

'I go to Gap Menswear or to John Lewis with OH and occasionally I might pop into the changing cubicle if he wants a second opinion'

Unless the changing room is empty, I think thats rude.

Report if you wish. I was making a rhetorical point. shrugs

SmudgeButt · 03/11/2019 13:13

I used to take DH along to the sale with me - well it's more likely he took me to make sure I bought some nice clothes. The changing rooms were always crowded and leaving the cubicle to look for him or different sizes etc wasn't an option. He was excellent at going off to get something that was bigger, smaller, better colour, would go with the thing I'd just tried on. Other women sometimes thought he either worked in the shop or was my personal shopper.

I wouldn't be bothered about a random bloke seeing my bare back. I was more concerned the time I tried on a dress in a shop and managed to tuck the hem in my knickers and only discovered it when I was standing in the store looking in the mirror as there wasn't one in the change room. The store assistant was standing directly behind me, must have seen what had happened and said nothing.

Bitch.

GeorgianaDovesHouse · 03/11/2019 13:14

As I said up thread, I may have to rethink this. Confused

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 13:15

Can’t you come up with a rhetorical point that isn’t homophobic?

Aderyn19 · 03/11/2019 13:15

I think this is s non issue too. The real problem is men being allowed to freely walk around inside the women's changing rooms and get changed there, just because they want to. That's the real imposition on women's boundaries, not some bloke using a sofa that's been badly positioned.

As for the grumpy buggers moaning about couples going shopping together - if I want to shop with my dh then I will and it's got fuck all to do with anyone else. If people going about their own business annoys you so much, then internet shop!

Binglebong · 03/11/2019 13:16

I'm not self conscious about being seen* - by women. I am by men. I'm sure I'm not alone.

  • being seen in a state of undress.
Butterisbest · 03/11/2019 13:16

@GeorgianaDovesHouse
Shrugging off homophobia, yes, go for it admit your bigotry

stucknoue · 03/11/2019 13:17

Don't understand the issue, the changing rooms have curtains. Many shops have unisex changing rooms and some are in the store

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 03/11/2019 13:18

I get irrationally irritated with men in underwear departments, standing a few feet away from their OH’s looking all shifty with faux nonchalance.

Probably because of statements like this. They’re terrified of even being in the shop in the first place just in case the mere presence of a penis offends. Should be banned from shops all together Hmm
