It's on the news fair enough. But does it need to be so biased. I'm Scottish and I know we're out but bleeeeeeegh

I have a lot of Scottish friends and colleagues due to where I live and it’s guaranteed if England do well in anything they hate it and will always support the other team.
I would always support Scotland and want them to do well despite me being 100% English

abitoflight · 02/11/2019 09:04

Yanbu
It invaded R4 today program and DH was telling me to complain to BBC duty officer Hmm
DD has this morning off lessons so that teachers and pupils can watch it. She'd rather be in lessons

CAG12 · 02/11/2019 09:23

I think its fine. What I CANNOT stand is the build up to football. Its so huge and you cant escape it

Monkeyseesmonkeydoes · 02/11/2019 09:25

Looking forward to seeing the smirk wiped off Owen Farrell’s face ...

WelshMoth · 02/11/2019 10:09

I'm absolutely LOVING this World Cup - what are some of you on about?

Here we have an immensely powerful and athletic team
game with an incredible amount of skills coming together.

They are not and never will be paid a fraction of the amount our footballers are played. Look at the dedication despite this.

Rarely do we hear about badly behaved rugby players.

Look at the respect showed to referrers on the pitch. Answer back? Abuse?! UNHEARD OF.

Cut me in half you'll see Cymru am Byth. I cried when Wales crashed out last week. I know some of the players families! That's said, no bitterness from me but a healthy knowledge of the differences in sporting backgrounds of the Welsh and English. Total grass roots sports often played with the arse hanging out of threadbare kits on pitches that are alongside grasslands where ponies are bought and sold.

Am I bitter? Yes a little, but that doesn't stop me from loving the whole tournament. We all pick sides - my hope is for a South African win. When a kid from one of the biggest townships who goes to school to be fed, can captain the national rugby team, it will mean everything, EVERYTHING, for him to lift that cup.

There's still massive inequality in South Africa. A win will heal so much and bring hope.

It's brutal to watch but the passion is tangible for everyone watching. I just hope and pray that there aren't any more injuries.

Second half about to start so I'm signing off.

Game on!!!!

PortiaCastis · 02/11/2019 10:13

May the best team win and adult sportsmanship abound

WelshMoth · 02/11/2019 10:18

Absolutely Portia.

For the record and to piss of my DH I don't think Farrell was smirking - I DID at the time, but since the pre-match player scrutiny, I just think he's a bloody hard Yorkshire worker, humble to the core and the smile was a response to what is an incredibly intimidating New Zealand Haka. It was a "Yes, bring the battle to us" smile.

I think the Haka (despite my loving it every time I see it) is a huge unfair psychological advantage, but that's another thread altogether. Grin

ManonBlackbeak · 02/11/2019 10:30

I'd take rugby over football any day of the week. I watched the Liverpool United game the other week and all the diving, pretending to be injured when another player brushed passed them, jeering fans and the managers chucking tantrums on the side lines. Its hardly setting a good example to kids is it? And would never happen in rugby.

PortiaCastis · 02/11/2019 10:31

I don't think he was smirking either but the haka is a bit dappy so I'd laugh not smirk, our Cornish boy is just going on the field !

Trewser · 02/11/2019 10:33

Some of you sound utter wet blankets. Why not turn your tvs off and go and do something more useful instead if you really hate it?

derxa · 02/11/2019 10:34

I think the Haka (despite my loving it every time I see it) is a huge unfair psychological advantage, but that's another thread altogether. Absolutely

Totally agree, I spent a month in South Africa a few weeks ago. I saw a township go up in flames. It was utterly heartbreaking. The next day there were people sitting in the central reservation on the tiny amount of personal belongings they’d managed to rescue. Literally sitting with EVERYTHING they owned at their feet.

raspberryk · 02/11/2019 10:36

My DP said he was getting up to watch the world cup and I replied "what world cup?"
I hadn't heard anything about it at all til last night.

SimonJT · 02/11/2019 10:39

@WelshMoth As someone who has been at the receiving end a few times, Hakas aren’t in the least bit intimidating.

WelshMoth · 02/11/2019 10:44

You're entitled to that Simon, but I still maintain that it's an unfair psychological advantage.

Sexnotgender that's heartbreaking to read.

Sexnotgender · 02/11/2019 10:46

It is heartbreaking, I cried as we drove passed the scene.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 02/11/2019 10:46

I didn't even know there was a Rugby Cup Final today! Nor do I care! Grin.

Sexnotgender · 02/11/2019 10:48

Fucking yasssss.

Go Bokke!!!

mbosnz · 02/11/2019 10:49

Bloody hell SA this is incredible!

Welshmoth, I agree with everything you've said.

derxa · 02/11/2019 10:50

I hadn't heard anything about it at all til last night. Do you own a TV?
Grin

mbosnz · 02/11/2019 10:52

Oh, except for the Haka being a huge psychological advantage. On one hand you've got people trying to belittle it, calling it pathetic, on the other, it's a 'huge psychological advantage'.

It's a bit of theatre to most, to many Kiwis it has so much cultural meaning, and it's a signal mark of respect to have one performed in your honour.

I do get that other people, particularly those that don't know or understand it's standing and meaning, wouldn't see it that way however.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoes · 02/11/2019 10:53

Come on SA!!!! Farrell’s not smirking now...

Sexnotgender · 02/11/2019 10:57

Yasssss!!! BokkeGrin

WelshMoth · 02/11/2019 11:03

Bloody hell what an emotional speech from the SA Captain. I am a bit teary here.
