To ask how people 'accidentally' get pregnant?

Butterflyone12e · 31/10/2019 16:15

I honestly do wonder how people say they fell pregnant by accident. Of course I can understand the horrific situation if sexual abuse/rape was involved but do people honestly fall accidentally pregnant?

I'm 33 years of age and have never fallen pregnant because I've not wanted to fall pregnant.

I wondered what peoples stories are. I really disagree with terminations (again unless medial or abuse).

Oh oh oh I can answer this.
Because it’s not 100% effective.

I was on the pill for ten years, ten glorious years with various partners. Not a period.
Then one day, new boyfriend (got drunk intended to use condoms but they stayed in the bag, even took the morning after pill to be sure) and bam 2/3 weeks later positive pregnancy result.

It happens. It hasn’t happened to you, but it does happen.

swingofthings · 31/10/2019 19:08

I got it wrong earlier!

Chances of getting pregnant using contraception in the real word: 0.3%

Chances of getting pregnant using contraception and being an MN reader: 75%

PortiaCastis · 31/10/2019 19:10

Chances of a smug bugger making women feel like shit 100%

itsgettingweird · 31/10/2019 19:11

I got pregnant whilst on pill. During 1 week break and after period had sex. As I was on AB I then decided to take MAP as a precaution.

15yo ds is sat next to me munching sweets as we speak!

The happiest accident I've ever had Grin

MyDcAreMarvel · 31/10/2019 19:11

I had an accidentally pregnancy, I was exclusively breastfeeding twins with no periods so assumed I would not ovulate. Massive shock but ds is wonderful.

SaveKevin · 31/10/2019 19:11

Given that this is a parenting website and your talking about becoming parents I would guess the sample is skewed Hmm

JacquesHammer · 31/10/2019 19:11

Quelle surprise!

AdalindMeisner · 31/10/2019 19:12

My mother fell pregnant with my sibling by taking antibiotics with the pill - gp didn't tell her they contraindicated each other.

itsgettingweird · 31/10/2019 19:15

That's interesting re ovulation. I guess the only explanation for me is I released an extra egg straight after my period and so that's why MAp failed 🤷‍♀️

OwlBeThere · 31/10/2019 19:19

@swingofthings your grasp of statistics and how they work is so bad you really shouldn’t be embarrassing yourself talking about them.

JenniR29 · 31/10/2019 19:19

‘My mother fell pregnant with my sibling by taking antibiotics with the pill - gp didn't tell her they contraindicated each other.’

They don’t. Unless they are enzyme inducing antibiotics (which unless she had tuberculosis I doubt she’d have been taking).

PonteLaCorona · 31/10/2019 19:28

*I think your question was more aimed at people having unprotected sex then wondering why they’re pregnant.

The latter annoys me too*

Oh Bunnyfuller (and OP) I am most terribly sorry for the annoyance.
I hadn't considered that my drunken irresponsibility teamed with that pity feeling I get when pondering my intended condom's unfulfilled battle against my negligible fertility (it's a bit of a passion killer tbh) was any of your business.

Anyway, as the Goldblum says in Jurassic Park, "Life, uh, finds a way" 🤷🏽‍♀️🦖👶🏽

swingofthings · 31/10/2019 19:30

@OwlBeThere
Glad you got the irony! Doesn't take away that if women in real life at the rate they do here, the pharmaceutical companies would have longed been challenged.

OneForTheRoadThen · 31/10/2019 19:30

Lots of people don't realise that you can get pregnant when breastfeeding or before your periods have returned after giving birth.

Mostly I think people chance it sometimes or don't use contraception effectively. That's why there is failure rates for 'perfect' use and 'normal' use.

Lots of people on here are very defensive.

Hellofromtheotherside2020 · 31/10/2019 19:31

Haha well, I always thought this too and took the smug outlook on people accidently getting pregnant.
I have three wonderful and planned for children. Husband got a vasectomy. Except....well, I'm now 7 months pregnant with our surprise baby and my husband's super sperm (his words) are too super 😂 and yes, before anyone asks, the baby is 100% his. His vasectomy managed to be one of those very few that self fix.

To say I panicked when I first found out (at about 15 weeks) was an understatement. But then mum passed away a couple of weeks after that, and now I believe this baby was sent to us to pull us through this horrific time, as I'm not sure how I would have got through losing her otherwise. Maybe everything does happen for a reason afterall.

Human error

PortiaCastis · 31/10/2019 19:34

Sorry about your Mum Hellfrom and what a nice way of looking at your pregnancy

Sometimes people are told they're unable to have children and then they conceive

Also, a lot of people are told that they have a condition that 'may affect fertility' and hear (in an understandable panic and upset) 'you are completely infertile'. A lot of women with PCOS believe themselves to be completely infertile with no actual evidence that's true.

Booboostwo · 31/10/2019 19:46

10 years on the pill and then an (ignorant) GP refused to repeat the prescription as I should “take a break”.

Two weeks after stopping the pill a female condom broke and because they are large neither of us felt it.

I took the MAP.

Still got pregnant.

Some people are just unlucky, that’s statistics for you.

HelgaGPataki · 31/10/2019 19:46

Another in the "you're a twat" brigade. I had a coil too. Believe it or not, it went missing and I then got pregnant without even realising anything was wrong. I then had to deal with finding out I was pregnant and then having a miscarriage after I'd come to terms with being pregnant. So it does happen and you should probably do some basic research before you ask a ridiculous question. The figures are published on how often contraception fails, it's not kept a secret!

riotlady · 31/10/2019 19:47

I was on the pill for nearly 10 years with no problems, decided to give the contraceptive patch a try and was pregnant within 6 months xD Best mistake of my life though!

Vampyress · 31/10/2019 19:49

I had a coil inserted and it fell out (I assume unless it shows up somewhere in my body on an xray someday), I was young and not checking the threads regularly. Contraception can and does fail.

RedPanda2 · 31/10/2019 19:49

You're being goady and obtuse. Contraception fails. Abortions are healthcare and I'll have as many as I want. HTH

JacquesHammer · 31/10/2019 19:51

Also, a lot of people are told that they have a condition that 'may affect fertility' and hear (in an understandable panic and upset) 'you are completely infertile'

A GP (male) very plainly told me that as I was infertile I didn’t need to bother with contraception and wasn’t sure why I was seeing him.
