I think it’s inevitable now and only a matter of when not if!
When will it happen and will it be a yes? What are your predictions?

OP posts:

Just checking, that;s the same Salmond who's due in court next month on 2 charges of rape, 9 of sexual assualt and 2 of indecent assault?

That's correct – and also not a reason for Scotland not to be independent. Salmond is one person, whether guilty or innocent. He's not Scottish independence.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 18:34

“ Europe made it clear we weren’t getting back in alone.”

That’s not true. Simply a lie.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 18:36

“ EngTech

I am looking forward to the Engineering Project that will carry out repair works that a previous manager called Hadrian started ”

Ah, so you wish to gift Scotland much of Cumbria and Northumberland. I accept! Thanks very much. 😆

LagunaBubbles · 30/10/2019 18:36

Yes. Not sure what your point is?

MyNameIsArthur · 30/10/2019 18:50

I lived in England from the age of two but will always have a strong bond with Scotland and have many relatives there. I would be so sad if Scotland voted to leave the UK . I think we are so much better together. I'm not really sure how it would work in practice. Most of Scotland's trade is with England. How would all the "assets" be divided?! Would there be a hard border between Scotland and England? What currency would be used? I pray that it doesn't happen as I think it would be bad for all. I don't even remember all this being an issue in the past. Once the thought is put in the head of people.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 18:56

Sad? So Scotland shouldn’t do what is best for it and get away from the mess Westminster has made because of your feelings?

Scotland owns 9% of the UK’s assets, which is worth considerably more that 9% of the UK’s debt. So we will likely start either net positive or debt free.

If that makes anyone in England sad, then they should have compelled their MPs to do a better fairer job in Westminster and not treat Scotland with such disregard and disrespect.

The remaining UK has made its bed though.

Ninjamum2 · 30/10/2019 19:48

Way more complicated this time round. If Scotland joins the EU and England has left the EU, we now have a new hard boarder to play with.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 19:52

“Way more complicated this time round. If Scotland joins the EU and England has left the EU, we now have a new hard boarder to play with.“

Only if Little England wants one, which it might, but it will look pretty stupid in wanting one when there isn’t a border between NI and the Republic.

MyNameIsArthur · 30/10/2019 20:20

That's not what I'm saying. I don't think any of us will be better off, but if Scotland truly believes it will be and a strong majority votes to be independent, then so be it

Scotland owns 9% of the UK’s assets

Where do you get this information from? Am not saying you're not right. I would just like to know the source of this information.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 20:25

“ Where do you get this information from? Am not saying you're not right. I would just like to know the source of this information.”

We are a constituent country of the UK, and if we became independent we would have to take our proportional share of UK debt. That also means we are entitled to the equivalent share of assets.

So we can walk away with no debt, or we can walk away with a debt to assets ratio deal.

It’s just law, politics and economics.

MyNameIsArthur · 30/10/2019 20:28

Where does the 9% come from though?

berryhead2013 · 30/10/2019 20:31

Just a thought..... if everyone in Scotland voted labour instead of snp we could get rid of the tories they would have no majority
There is a date for a general election but an indyref 2 is just a dream at the moment
Play the long game people!
our 50 odd Scottish seats play a very important part in getting rid of the tories and their scummy lies
I am Scottish and would love Scotland to be independent but we have to get rid of the tories first

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 20:36

“ Do Scottish people feel the SNP are doing a good job running the country?”

Not at the moment, no. And I am a long time SNP voter. There is no viable alternative though.

After independence, the SNP will split and we will have entirely new parties competing in elections in Scotland.

PaddyF0dder · 30/10/2019 20:36

@berryhead2013

But, as an SNP voter in scotland, I don’t want to vote labour. I’m not a unionist. I don’t want nuclear weapons. I don’t like many of their policies.

Labour do not have an automatic entitlement to my vote purely because of “not being the tories”. If they want my vote, they need to earn it. I don’t owe it to them.

TheSandman · 30/10/2019 20:54

They asked, we voted no. That should be the end of it. They can't keep asking until they get the answer they want.

Unless of course you are the Tory Party when you set a five year fixed term parliament... only to keep rigging up General Elections whenever it suits you.

Democracy is not a Choose Once and That's it Done Forever deal. Things change. People's lies get found out. People's unprincipled undeliverable promises turn to crap in our faces. Of course we need another Independence Referendum.

England will be so much happier without us. (And, if you believe their fibs, richer too. I really don't know why they want to hang on to us so badly if they think we're costing them so much.)

Pandainmyporridge · 30/10/2019 20:58

I'm not a "true Scot" as I'm not a Scot but I will be voting yes, again.
It might go tits up but then again it might be amazing. If we stay in UK it will be more of the same forever - toriestoriestories in government for evermore.

Pandainmyporridge · 30/10/2019 20:59

It is worth it just to get trident out of the country, tbh.

PhasersTaeMalky · 30/10/2019 21:03

It will happen again. Again the answer will be no. Again people will be shocked because "everyone they know voted yes". 'Cept they didn't but they kept quiet about it because of the vitriol being thrown about. Just like Brexit.

TheSandman · 30/10/2019 21:03

I am looking forward to the Engineering Project that will carry out repair works that a previous manager called Hadrian started 👍👍😎

You do realise Hadrian's Wall is ENTIRELY within England. Putting the border there would annex great chunks of Northumberland and half of Newcastle on Tyne.

We'll take it.

The more I hear of it the more I think others too must be fed up to the back teeth with the Indyref. SNP sole purpose is independence now. From what I hear from friends Scotland is falling apart at the seams as it is eg NHS abysmal, education 3rd lowest in European league table, elderly just forgotten about unless in a care home. Apparently ok for young people who are treated like gods, wouldn't be to get their vote would it by any chance. 16 year olds already get to vote in Scottish elections. There will be another Indyref but what no Scottish friend can tell me is: why is SNP so against Brexit when if Independent Scotland would be out of EU anyway without any security from rest of UK. Anyine on here got the answer?

Ninjamum2 · 30/10/2019 21:15

You haven't been listening to the northern Irish issue have you? Without a single marketplace between England and the EU then the EU has to protect it boarders. Northern Ireland won't have a boarder because it's effectively being kept in the single market.

apples24 · 30/10/2019 21:16

Looks likely that the referendum will happen. It's really not what we need in these already uncertain times. Like someone else said above, better the devil you know...

Despite not wanting another referendum, will tactically vote SNP in the next GE to oust current useless Tory MP. Irony is that in the next Scottish elections I might vote Scottish Tories, depends on what direction the party takes post Ruth.

Ninjamum2 · 30/10/2019 21:18

I think the EU would let them in quicker. They only said they wouldn't before to keep the UK on side. If brexit happens there's no need to. Scotland will have all the relevant laws and standards too so the only blocker will be if they're forced to join the euro.

cheeseandchives · 30/10/2019 21:21

SNP sole purpose is independence now.

This is not exactly a secret...

RichPetunia · 30/10/2019 21:21

It's a big fat no from me. Funny that, the same as last time. zzzzz....snorefest.....zzzzz
