I think it’s inevitable now and only a matter of when not if!
When will it happen and will it be a yes? What are your predictions?

OP posts:
MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 30/10/2019 11:03

I wouldn't move unless things were terrible. My family, friends & life are here and I wouldn't uproot dd. It may not be my choice to have independence but when you live in a democratic society you have to accept whichever way the vote goes.

@MrsMaiselsMuff yes I know it's a lot more than just him, but that doesn't make it easier to vote labour when he will be leader. I think labour would do a lot better in the voting if it weren't for him.

IFlyAStarship · 30/10/2019 11:11

I don't really understand the logic of leaving one union to join another and I don't believe that Scotland will have the resources to look after itself as oil increasingly becomes a dirty word 🤷‍♀️

goodtoseeyou · 30/10/2019 11:14

Fuck off SNP.

LagunaBubbles · 30/10/2019 11:15

am bloody sick of this !this apparently once in a lifetime vote actually means the SNP will keep badgering on until they get their way!was a no still a no and always will be a no just run the feckin country and do your job

It was Alex Salmond that said it was a once in a lifetime vote, it was never official SNP policy. "Badgering on"? ? Are people stupid, of course the SNP will always want indepedence, that's what they stand for and exist for and will never stop campaigning for it. It's no great surprise, vote for them that's what you are going to get, a campaign for independence. And they've been voted in as the Scottish Government.

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2019 11:20

I think Arlene foster moving is entrenched in her religious politics I personally don't think it would be the same as Scotland being Independent.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 11:20

The unionists have had their way for over 300 years and change is finally on the way. We’ll be starting at 50/50 or better this time. Last time Yes started at 25% and got to 45%.

This is why the unionists will use every trick in the book to try to stop Indyref2 from taking place. They know their hegemony is almost at an end. Support for independence among under 55s is very much the majority now.

Good luck to the unionists this time on selling the UK option of Boris’ Broken Brexit Britain versus being a normal country which makes its own decisions. 😆

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 11:22

“ Would Scots move south of the border then if there was independence. ”

Polls indicate 2m people would wish to move north. In reality it would be more like 400,000 and they will be very welcome. They will bring their money and their skills and it will result in a construction and infrastructure boom.

Clangus00 · 30/10/2019 11:23

Can’t come soon enough!
I was Yes the last time and I’ll be Yes this time too.

QueenoftheDay · 30/10/2019 11:24

Ah here they come.

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2019 11:25

Can I just point out it wasn't SNP who brought in free uni fees it was a labour/libdem coalition. I know I'm maybe being picky but it is always assumed an SNP thing.

Changedmynametoolikeyou · 30/10/2019 11:25

No thanks.

MintyMabel · 30/10/2019 11:27

hope those who voted no last time are able to see through the unionist propaganda and lies.

I hope those who voted yes last time are able to see through the SNP propaganda and lies.

MorrisZapp · 30/10/2019 11:29

Well as brexit has shown, it's a simply marvellous idea to take a contentious proposition that roughly half of the population want then drag it marginally over the line and make huge, irreversible constitutional changes based upon a teeny majority.

Easy peasy. Everyone loves it.

Happityhap · 30/10/2019 11:32

apparently once in a lifetime vote

What about us apparently leaving the EU on 31st October, for absolute definite?
Or someone apparently going to die in a ditch?

Politicians, eh.

MintyMabel · 30/10/2019 11:36

Anybody watching the shitshow of Brexit, seen how difficult it is to get a deal to extract yourself from an economic union with one side who doesn't want a split, and thinks now is the right time to split from the Union is an idiot.

I have no principle objection to Independence. Splitting when there is already so much uncertainty, in times of austerity, when the poorest people in the Country are already struggling is a really bad idea. We may be better off in the long run, but in the short term, the very people who are voting for this are the ones who will really suffer. They believe A Scottish Government will see them right, but it won't. It won't be able to afford to.

If the SNP really want to do this for the right reasons they will build up a buffer and work towards it. They don't do that. They let things go to shit, point the finger at Westminster and use that to bolster their case. Ever wondered why they never ask the question when the going is good?

MintyMabel · 30/10/2019 11:38

I can’t imagine they could maintain their stance if they had more experience deprivation and lack of services in the rest of the UK.

Bizarre argument. We are able to have all that within the UK. If we leave, that is in jeopardy.

QueenoftheDay · 30/10/2019 11:39

Like Brexit, it should not be implemented by a straight majority. It should require a 60% or 75% majority to get it through. Brexit has utterly demonstrated this.

Will never happen though.

MintyMabel · 30/10/2019 11:39

Would Scots move south of the border then if there was independence

I would have once upon a time. But with the Brexit stuff, I'd think twice.

Canada is looking good...

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 30/10/2019 11:43

I will vote No again. I am so fed up with the SNP. They have been propped up by the Greens so don’t even have a mandate for another independence referendum and it is all they keep bleating about.

If you think Brexit is a shambles just wait until you try to unravel a 300 year old Union.

Simple question for the Yes voters. Where is your hard border going to be? The vast majority of English folk don’t care about Northern Ireland but it’s going to be a whole different issue when an EU country (presuming Scotland is allowed back in) fully signed up to schengen has a land border with England.

Curlysurprise · 30/10/2019 11:45

@thegirlfromstoryville - good questions

The downsides - higher paye ; where I live higher council tax which is siphoned off to the Central Belt, despite some of the most deprived areas being local to me.
Free prescriptions - not sure we all need that but I did read that managing collection of charges is uneconomic ; free Education - def proud of that but not SNP.
NHS waiting times worse than ever.
Basically if you don’t live in the Central Belt, the SNP don’t rate you.
I am a hell no , btw

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 30/10/2019 11:46

Also can you imagine what would happen if it was 52 48 to leave. You would have the western isles and Shetland complaining about being dragged out against their will!

Defenestratethecat · 30/10/2019 11:49

Buccanarab, the ONLY person coming out with the too little, too poor, too stupid line was Sturgeon.

PaddyF0dder · 30/10/2019 11:50

I voted “yes” last time. I’ll vote “yes” again this time. The UK has shown itself to be a political shit show, so bring on independence. I see no reason why Scotland couldn’t be a successful small European country like Ireland.

That said, I suspect the result will be another “no”.

StreetwiseHercules · 30/10/2019 11:59

“ Where is your hard border going to be? ”

We won’t be building one, so that will be up to you if you want one.

Scotland will likely join EFTA with a future referendum on EU membership. Schengen will be great for Scotland. It might not suit England but it will definitely suit us. So much business investment which would ordinarily have gone to London will come to Scotland because of our market access and freedom of movement. Barclays and JP Morgan are already getting their ducks in a row with massive investment in Glasgow.

Yum.

Defenestratethecat · 30/10/2019 12:03

Thegirlfromstoryville, I’ve a friend who is a pharmacist and DH works in HE. Pharmacist friend is continually horrified at wastage due to free prescriptions - individuals stockpiling hundreds of pounds worth of dressings/medications etc.

DH’s university is on it’s knees as funding has not kept pace with the cost of education. They are taking on more and more overseas students because they are a source of high fees. LOcal students are missing out on places because of this.

Our council tax was frozen on SNP authorisation for about 5 years, but we’ve had massive increases the last 3 years (more than 10%) as councils try and make up the shortfall.

And don’t get me started on gender recognition policies..........

We have huge issues with alcohol and drug abuse.

So Scotland, despite what the SNP would have you think, is not a land of milk and honey.
