Jeremy Corbyn

I see so many posters saying they won’t vote for Labour as they don’t like Jeremy Corbyn - why? If the Labour policies are good then why not vote for those rather than the leader?

OP posts:

I am a Labour Party member - have been for 34 years

I dislike JC - I really hate the toxic atmosphere around the party caused by Momentum - his supporters. I dislike the rise of anti Semitism in the party (and it is there - listen to your fellow members!) I dislike the fact that he paid for his leadership by selling off part membership cheap and allowing people who are not and never will be activists doing the bloody hard work to vote him in and keep him there.

I dislike his snotty bad tempered attitude to criticism, I hate the fact that he has zero actual life experience (he is a careersist politician ) I dislike the parties stance on women and self ID.

I really hate the fact that my party is no longer the place to debate, disagree, listen to peoples view points - it's become a dictatorship/cult

BUT I will vote Labour because their policies still speak to me of a fairer society with people cared for and wealth shared - more than any other party - but it will be through gritted teeth.

My problems with Corbyn are legion:

  1. He lies, I have not forgotten his little stunt on a Virgin train pretending he couldn’t find a seat.
  1. He is incompetent, despite banging the drum on the housing crisis HIS is the constituency with one of the worst problems, and he’s represented them for decades. If he can’t use the measure of the political power he has and leverage it to improve things I have zero confidence that handing him more power would make any difference.
  1. He has ignored and allowed a nasty anti-Semitic streak to flourish within the party.
  1. He allowed John McDonnell to slap a copy of Mao’s little red book in the houses of commons, which should offend the sensibilities of anyone who places even the slightest value on human life. In much the same way as if someone to slap down a copy of Mein Kampf.
  1. Refusal to condemn the actions of the Venezuelan government who are just the latest example of the socialist experiment gone badly wrong.
  1. His double standard in that he can treat with the IRA and Palestinian terrorists, but apparently cannot share the stage with Tony Blair during the brexit referendum. On the one hand we should always be willing to sit down and dialogue with our idealogical opponents for the greater good but he won’t follow that principle when it suits him. Therefore he is capricious and unpredictable.

Tragedy is though I could compile just as compelling a list for Boris fucking Johnson. Sad thing is that probably the two most loathsome individuals in british politics (in my estimation) are leading the two major parties. It really feels like the tag line of that spectacularly shitty sci fi shambles aliens vs predator “whoever wins, we lose...”

I voted leave in the referendum (and would likely vote the same in a second!), but I am in the position where I think the Liberal Democrat’s are the only sane choice here. Strange times indeed.

StripeyDeckchair · 30/10/2019 13:00

He's refused to deal with rampant antisemitism in the party, allowed it to become highly misogynistic and failed to take a clear position on Brexit. (He supports leave).
He refuses to engage with the press so how are we, the voters, to know what he stands for?

Cinammoncake · 30/10/2019 13:06

Odious as he is, I find Boris Johnson worse.

khaleesi71 · 30/10/2019 13:13

Jeremy Corbyn has failed to demonstrate any leadership qualities whatsoever - so no, I won't vote labour. He has allowed anti-semitism to go unchecked and there is a spectacular lack of information on key policies and stances in issues such as Brexit. Those who believe it's the media's fault are delusional - he simply hasn't had a message or has preferred to use other channels which don't speak to a wider audience. His ego has steered the party to the extreme left and he's abandoned the centre in much the same was as the tories have. The tories are vile and I won't vote for them either - and thats been a pretty life long view. I'm frustrated that people think either you vote labour or you allow the tories in - that is bollocks. The Lib-Dems will get my vote - yes, they made some compromise decisions in government but people seem to forget the whole gamut of shite we've had with tories (austerity, brexit) and labour (dubious decisions around the special relationship, economics etc). Both those parties need to take a long hard look at themselves and neither are worthy of governing this mess of a country at present.

fotheringhay · 30/10/2019 13:38

Did anyone see JC at PMQs just now?

I mean, I'd prefer literally any other Labour MP to be leader, however, credit to him he's improved over the years.

ghostyslovesheets · 30/10/2019 13:42

The Lib-Dems will get my vote - yes, they made some compromise decisions in government but people seem to forget the whole gamut of shite we've had with tories

but lets NOT forget they where in coalition with the Tories when austerity was the buzz word

Popcornfan2 · 30/10/2019 13:45

I am going to vote conservative for the first time ever. I have been impressed with Johnson and his leadership. He has taken the bull by the horns on Brexit and I think he deserves time to get this finished. I am sick of the constant getting nowhere with Brexit and want it done and dusted so they can get on with other things.

I don’t like Labour anymore. Loved them under Blair but union power and Corbyn have made me rethink. I am also disgusted with my own MP for continually blocking with her vote and abstaining on the election vote.

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 30/10/2019 13:46

Fake Boris J is so much worse than stubborn JC IMO, will be voting Labour.

fotheringhay · 30/10/2019 13:48

Jess Phillips made a brilliant dig at BJ just now over his neglect of his children.

Love her

DoctorTwo · 30/10/2019 13:55

I have a problem with antisemitism in the Labour party just as I have a problem with Islamophobia in the Conservative party. Both viewpoints are abhorrent.

I wouldn’t vote for labour no matter who leads them. Their policies don’t support a fair society. They allow lazy people to live of the state and tax hard working people to the hilt.. nope not for me.

noodlenosefraggle · 30/10/2019 14:07

I will vote Labour despite Corbyn because I hope him and his cronies will be gone soon and because I live in a tight marginal with a decent looking local candidate.
I probably will vote Labour even though my vote isnt wanted because I'm Centre left, so therefore, may as well be Tory. I'm also apparently too thick to make my own decisions about Corbyn and the hard left cabal he is surrounded by, stupidly hoodwinked by the right wing media who have mutated my earlobes when I listen to John McDonnel and others from the Labour party trying to explain their policy on Brexit for one.
The power of the press is much diminished. Its up to the Labour party to get out and convince people to vote for them with policies that appeal to people. Not come up with unappealing policies then say 'Why oh why are people not as clever as us?'

Autumnfields · 30/10/2019 14:07

I know he’s had a smear campaign.

I know he’s a good guy with some good integrity. And has does a couple of things that I admire.

However he has massive blind spots and is just socialist left which is not my stance at all. Nor many many others we aren’t on the student campus now and that is what it feels like. He has no core and I think we need a good core.

khaleesi71 · 30/10/2019 14:09

*but lets NOT forget they where in coalition with the Tories when austerity was the buzz word
*
And let's think where we might be if they were in sole power running amok. Additionally labour abstained from 'welfare reform' so no one came out of that awful period with a clean sheet.

Austerity was horrid - no one (except weird entitled tories) wants that back - but I won't back an anti-Semite or as PP rightly points out, an islamaphobe. I hope this election wrings out our political dross.

BadSun · 30/10/2019 14:11

He’s an egomaniac and his policies are rooted in far left socialism

LMAO. Far left? Yeah right. Keep swallowing what the papers tell you.

noodlenosefraggle · 30/10/2019 14:15

but at least Labour make efforts to reach 50:50 men/women MPs

They are also the only major political party in the UK to have never had a female leader. So they are OK for doing the grunt work, but cant play with the big boys.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/10/2019 14:28

Labour can’t get a new leader at the moment because of the bullying behaviour in Momentum. When Corbyn loses again they will be neutered hopefully and someone more measured can step in to steer the Labour Party back to electoral success

This is my own view in a nutshell. I actively want them to be electable again, besides which an effective opposition's vital - but I don't believe it'll happen under the current regime

Like extremists of every stripe there's simply no resonaning with them, so I'm hoping yet another GE loss might be enough to bring change (though I'm not sure even of that Sad)

Epicwaffle · 30/10/2019 14:35

Corbyn and his cabinet of cronies are an absolute shower of cunts.

There are myriad reasons here already that I would have given, so I won’t repeat them ad nauseum. But Hell would freeze over before I voted labour right now. And I have voted labour in the past.

Grumpelstilskin · 30/10/2019 14:39

I am not a supporter of the Tories but I will not vote for Labour as long as they allow the bullying out of women's members and continue their misogynistic policies. As an aside to their horrendous anti-semitism that is peaking under that bungling gobshite who could not organise a piss-up in a brewery.

Twisique · 30/10/2019 14:42

I suppose it depends where you get your information from, lots of the papers paint him in a negative light but they are right wing papers so biased.

I have just listened to him give a really sensitive and thoughtful speech in the house of commons about Grenfell. He is challenging the governments lack of action about tower blocks.

I also like a lot of the Labour MPs, Jess Phillips is fantastic and there are loads of really good people in the party.

BadSun · 30/10/2019 14:42

His ego has steered the party to the extreme left

Seriously. Anyon saying labour are far left or extreme left under Corbyn is just showing themselves to have very little understanding of politics.

BelleSausage · 30/10/2019 14:47

To my mind Jeremy’s worst sin is his absolute stubbornness. It’s not an admirable quality. He is incapable of changing his mind on anything and appears totally intractable.

The worst thing is that how perfectly obvious it is that he is incapable of commanding a majority. Virtually any other Labour MP could step up to be leader and double the Labour vote over night. Yet he sits there insistent that it’s him or no one.

So I blame him for the situation we are in as much as I blame Cameron, May and Johnson.

I was a party member when he was elected Labour leader and voted for him. I am disgusted with myself and he won’t get my vote.

BelleSausage · 30/10/2019 14:49

Let’s be clear- if Corbyn resigned today the Labour vote share would jump up.

But he won’t. Because he is too selfish and will lead the party to it’s worst election drubbing in decades.
