How are you voting in December?

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this - I did look and couldn’t find one.

So now it’s been confirmed that we’re having a GE in December, how are you voting? And what are your predictions on the results?

I’ve seen quite a few posts on here over the past couple months from people saying they wouldn’t vote now as they are politically homeless - wondering if these people still feel that way?

I’m voting labour - albeit in a very safe Tory area (so feel very much as though my vote doesn’t count). Reasons being I would never vote Tory and I don’t like a lot of what the Lim Dems have said recently. I also couldn’t bring myself not to vote at all.

Why on earth should one person be able to veto another having a sex change?
You wouldn't be in a same sex marriage. The process to a sex change takes at least a year of living as the opposite gender, for one, so it wouldn't come as a huge sudden shock.

Cinammoncake · 30/10/2019 22:31

exhausted I don't think it's that common tbh, and also, I'd imagine people are more upset that their marriage is over because their spouse is trans, rather than the fact they're in a same sex marriage very temporarily? Are people saying they should be able to stop their spouse transitioning? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the issue.

In any case is it more important an issue nationally than say brexit, child poverty, etc? I suppose that's what I was trying to get at. No party is perfect that's for sure.

Sunshine93 · 30/10/2019 22:33

I am absolutely gobsmacked that this highly unlikely scenario outweighs any other issues for you in terms of our country going forwards and the the future for all our kids. I mean fair enough if that's your view, but it's hard to understand for me

Me too. It's the weirdest reason!

ExhaustedGrinch · 30/10/2019 22:37

Why on earth should one person be able to veto another having a sex change? because otherwise the other party is forced into a same sex marriage. They can only veto until divorce obviously.

In any case is it more important an issue nationally than say brexit, child poverty, etc? I suppose that's what I was trying to get at. No, it's not more important to me BUT it is something I'm not willing to compromise on either. Of course no party is ideal and it's usually a case of picking the best from a bad bunch but this policy is a dealbreaker for me on principle.

StoneofDestiny · 30/10/2019 22:41

If I had the vote it Scotland it would be SNP.
In England it will be Labour (they need to get rid of Corbyn, but that will come. Corbyn could never be as bad as Boris Johnson and the Tories and the unbelievable chaos they have brought to the UK)

Figmentofmyimagination · 30/10/2019 22:45

exhausted are you talking about the proposed changes to the legal test to obtain a gender recognition certificate? These proposals were brought forward by Theresa May, the then Conservative prime minister.

AllTheGoodUNsTaken · 30/10/2019 22:45

Isn't something like less than 1% of the population transgender? Given that many transition in their teens, and some won't be married, this will probably affect around 0.5% of the population. The selling off of the NHS will most definitely affect at least 99% who can't afford private insurance.
Of course, you are entitled to vote whichever way you like for whatever reason you like!

StoneofDestiny · 30/10/2019 22:46

I am truly shocked that anyone would vote Labour under Corbyn

I'm truly shocked anyone could vote Tory under Boris Johnson

How are you voting in December?
doublebarrellednurse · 30/10/2019 22:50

LD are the only ones with a hope against tories here so them

ExhaustedGrinch · 30/10/2019 22:52

Figmentofmyimagination Nope.

AllTheGoodUNsTaken If it happens to one person then it's one person too many. The numbers matter not to me, it's the principle.

Mothership4two · 30/10/2019 22:52

DH and I really just don't know this time. Think these election results will be quite different from normal

DustyWindows · 30/10/2019 22:53

Utterly shocked that anyone would vote Conservative for many, many reasons.

How can it be right for our Prime Minister to repeatedly call for the general election until he get the result he wants, yet at the the same time be against a second referendum, Does anyone else see the hypocrisy in this?

Cinammoncake · 30/10/2019 22:53

Still hard to understand but then I've got nothing against same sex marriage Confused maybe you don't have either. But then I wouldn't consider myself in a same sex marriage if my dh suddenly transitioned, I'd consider myself separated and about to divorce.

But like pp said, you can obviously vote for who you want for whatever reason you want.

Xenia · 30/10/2019 22:53

He is a great leader and very popular and with good policies. I would be more shocked if anyone voted for Corybn.

As for single issue voters they have always been around - abortion can be one people have very strong views on. Most people vote for a variety of issues but not everyone.

I did not support the last Government's plans to change our gender recognition laws and I think Mrs May did listen to the many women who were against changing the law

53,000 people (I was one) commented on the consultation www.gov.uk/government/consultations/reform-of-the-gender-recognition-act-2004 and I am hoping the result is they are leaving the issue in a silo and let the law stay unchanged. Fingvers crossed.

I think this is Labour policy on it "A Labour government will reform the Gender Recognition Act and the Equality Act 2010 to ensure they protect Trans people by changing the protected characteristic of ‘gender assignment’ to ‘gender identity’ and remove other outdated language such as ‘transsexual’. labour.org.uk/manifesto/a-more-equal-society/ However that was from 2017 so they have changed views since.

ScreamedAtTheMichelangelo · 30/10/2019 22:53

Was DBML playing Tory bingo? JFC. I’m a higher rate tax payer and I’d welcome a tax increase if it meant supporting the NHS, improving education, increasing police/firefighters/medical staff, and improving the lives of those on the breadline. I’ve been fucking poor, so I know that no matter how hard I think I work to earn my nice salary, I don’t have it nearly as hard as the person on minimum wage supporting their family, the carer trying to live on Carers Allowance, or the person living in fear of the DWP brown envelope.

Month long holidays?! Get tae fuck.

Cobblersandhogwash · 30/10/2019 22:54

Johnson and Corbyn are both horrendous.

I just don't know who to vote for.

Might even vote Brexit party to split the dumb Brexshitters vote.

Frokni · 30/10/2019 22:58

Not labour or tory

Most likely Green

ExhaustedGrinch · 30/10/2019 23:01

Cinammoncake I definitely don't have anything against same sex marriages, I wouldn't rule out marrying another woman myself in the future. However I'd like that to be a choice, not something that is forced upon me against my wishes. Likewise, if I was in a same sex marriage and someone changed sex I'd then find myself in a heterosexual marriage against my wishes. For me it's merely a matter of principle but for others it could have far worse consequences, for example some religions and cultures are strongly against same sex marriages and they, like anyone else, should have a say in whether they enter that same sex marriage or not.

Cinammoncake · 30/10/2019 23:06

Thanks for explaining exhausted and I'd never heard of the issue before. To my mind I'd be 'blaming' this on my dh rather than the LibDems iyswim but I do respect your viewpoint and thanks for discussing it.

LaurieMarlow · 30/10/2019 23:11

He is a great leader and very popular and with good policies

The continual lying doesn’t bother you?

I find that staggering.

Tillygetsit · 30/10/2019 23:11

Always been staunch Labour but I'm so disgusted with their weak attitude to the disgusting Boris I'm considering voting Lib Dem. I despise the Cons ( a name which suits them) and their vile attitudes to issues like homelessness and disability.

Sunshine93 · 30/10/2019 23:19

If this thread demonstrates anything it's that the we have no idea who are behind the messages we read. Anyone could join up to mumsnet, look for threads on politics and check in to praise any politician they liked.

I would advise anyone who is not 100% sure to read the manifestos of the parties they are considering and watch full speeches(not cut versions on news ) anything you read online or in the papers will have been written by someone with an opinion. See it for yourself and decide for yourself.

gower4 · 30/10/2019 23:22

Conservative

VanGoghsDog · 30/10/2019 23:23

The spousal veto is misnamed. You can't veto the sex change (which is obviously impossible anyway) - it just means you have the right to end the marriage. Which seems entirely reasonable to me.

If my dp suddenly decided he was a woman, no way would I want to stay with him. And I don't see why, if we were married, I'd have to wait two years to divorce him (if he didn't agree).

It's an important issue for me too. But as no party has a sensible line on the trans stuff, it's one I'll probably end up setting aside in my decision making.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoes · 31/10/2019 00:13

Green. Will get elected where we are.
