If you haven't already?

Also, encourage your older teenagers to register for the first time.

Boris has proposed election for December!

People voted to leave because of immigration for the most part. Some saw it as a 'pick which you like best; Europe or England' thing.

A smaller proportion of leave voters had genuine, well thought out reasons. I respect them. They're in the minority though, unfortunately.

They're are trying to privatise it- hence things like Virgin, Circle (remember Hinchingbrooke?) etc

Thing is, it's not that easy to do. It's a huge and complex system that has evolved organically over the past 70 years. It's being slowly chipped away. The slows is partly necessity and partly political- doing it too quickly would alarm their voters.

There is also the issue of NHS performance and quality of care- it had declined in the past ten years.

Public services always decline under a Tory government. Always. That cannot be argued with.

The Tories have been in Government for nearly ten years. If they really wanted to privatise it what has stopped them from doing so?

No majority perhaps? In any case they are privatising it by stealth. When will you Tory voters wake up?

Xenia · 26/10/2019 16:43

The Tories are commuitted to the welfare state as am I (even though I have only seen my GP to 5 minutes in the last 10 years so not exactly got much back for my heaps of tax but then I am lucky not to get ill).

It was Labour who brought in student fees.
It was Labour who brought in a voucher you could set against private school fees for 4 year olds (my twins benefitted from that - thanks TB)

Spending on heaslth has been increasing and many of us are feeling that in the huge taxes we pay. " Looking at the wider UK, the amount spent on health has been increasing over the long-term. That’s true whether it’s expressed in cash, cash adjusted for inflation, per person, or as a proportion of the size of the economy" fullfact.org/health/spending-english-nhs/

"At the moment, UK public health spending is the equivalent of about 7% of GDP, similar to what it was back in 2010 and higher than in previous years. Back in 1955, it was worth about 3% of GDP."

SilverySurfer · 26/10/2019 16:59

Not forgetting that food banks were introduced under a Labour government.

Alsohuman · 26/10/2019 17:01

Nice selective quoting, @Xenia. Here’s some more from your source.

Health experts from the Nuffield Trust, Health Foundation and King’s Fund say tight spending in recent years and increasing demand for services have been “taking a mounting toll on patient care”. They add that there is “growing evidence that access to some treatments is being rationed and that quality of care in some services is being diluted.”

And

Demand for health services has also increased over time. Adjusting the same figures above to account for the population, the average annual growth in per person spending between 1949/50 and 2016/17 was about 3.3%, and was 0.6% between 2009/10 and 2016/17.

Not quite the rosy picture you paint.

Hingeandbracket · 26/10/2019 17:03

i.e. not at all

Hingeandbracket · 26/10/2019 17:04

Huge taxes my arse

Hingeandbracket · 26/10/2019 17:05

Johnson has already said the NHS is not open to the US.

Johnson would know the truth if it hit him in the face.

Drabarni · 26/10/2019 17:08

Johnson has already said the NHS is not open to the US.
Oh, we're ok then, saved, phew. Grin

It's mind boggling how thick some people are, scary too.

Alsohuman · 26/10/2019 17:09

Before the 2008 credit crunch, food banks were "almost unheard of" in the UK

I guess you’re still blaming a global financial crisis on a Labour government @Silverysurfer, it doesn’t wash, I’m afraid. If a Tory government is so caring, why has their use more than trebled since 2010? Surely they’d no longer exist if life was so great under a Tory government.

Hingeandbracket · 26/10/2019 17:10

@SilverySurfer
Not forgetting that food banks were introduced under a Labour government.
That is just plain factually incorrect. Where do you get these lies? Some bloke in a pub?

dadshere · 26/10/2019 17:13

Xenis, no one with half a brain will believe your blue BS.

"Tories spend what they have and conserve money"

Demonstratably false. The debt has risen under the Tory governments EVERY YEAR. In fact, By 2020 the government will have borrowed more than all Labour governments put together. EVER

Tories are the most prolific spendthrifts on the planet. The difference being Labour will spend on the NHS, the education services, anf making the country a better and fairer place. Tories will spend it on ensuring that bankers and CEOs will continue to be paid obscene salaries, dodging taxes and increasing inequality.

Alsohuman · 26/10/2019 17:27

Don’t forget bribing the DUP.

EntropyRising · 26/10/2019 17:38

I'll leave you to your remainer echo chamber. Wink

Alsohuman · 26/10/2019 17:39

Who mentioned remaining @EntropyRising?

Chivers53 · 26/10/2019 17:40

If you don't want to vote for a party, go in and spoil your ballot paper. Those are counted, and although they won't make any difference this time, if they're aware people arent voting for anyone as they can't see anyone they want to, they might start listening to claw in voters. If you just stay at home you're lumbered in with the can't be arsed, have no idea what's going on, and the haven't registered in times; all of which are fine, but if you're dissatisfied show them.

Hingeandbracket · 26/10/2019 17:43

@dadshere Don't waste your time with Xenia - it never responds to any factual challenges, just ignores or issues more meaningless platitudes. I used to think people claiming there were bots posting on here were tinfoil hatters but I am wondering if Xenia is an experimental Tory bot - it shows no apparent signs of being human.

GreySheep · 26/10/2019 17:49

For the first time ever, there is not a single party I can vote for in good conscience. This makes me very sad but it’s true. I disagree with all of them. How can I vote for any of the parties under these circumstances. There is no lesser evil either.

GreySheep · 26/10/2019 17:54

If there was a box to tick that read:

“I don’t want an election - I don’t want another referendum. I just want all you overpaid MP’s to stop pissing about and come to an agreement & compromise, for the country to be allowed to move on..... AND for all the energy being put into fighting amongst themselves to be put into making Brexit as good as it can be instead”.

This is what I’d vote for.

Hingeandbracket · 26/10/2019 17:56

@GreySheep I agree - and I will be spoiling my ballot to show that. We need electoral reform now.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 26/10/2019 18:00

I don’t think any of you realise what a shit show a labour majority would be. I’ve registered to vote and would vote for BJ (even though I really dislike him) to be able to stay in the country but I am making contingencies.

Alsohuman · 26/10/2019 18:03

@Velveteenfruitbowl, I don’t think you realise what a shitshow a Johnson government with a majority would be. Why would you want to stay here? If I could leave I’d do it in a heartbeat. I’m not voting Labour either, other parties are available.

Willow2017 · 26/10/2019 18:28

Hefzi
It's quite hard now not to engage - every address gets a letter every year asking for confirmations and/or changes to the register.

😂😂😂😂
It's bloody hard to.engage anything round here apparently.
I have just received my 3rd register to vote forms for me and kids. Other 2 filled in and returned but apparently nobody can put them onto the register this year so have another 3 forms.
Doesn't fill.me with confidence for the electoral system tbh never mind the useless politicians who.couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery. None of the parties leaders could tell the truth if thier life depended on it.
It's such a depressing idea that you have to chose the least ridiculous party to lead the country up the garden path.

Dapplegrey · 26/10/2019 18:54

If mumsnet is a reliable barometer then the Lib Dems are going to win the next election by a landslide!
