Border Terriers & Shiny black labradors.
You should move to where I live, @Bonkersblond. I reckon that 75% of the dogs round my way are either BTs or black labs!
I love all dogs, but the long-legged, wire-haired terriers (lakeland, Welsh, fox, Irish, Airedale and border) really do it for me. It's that combination of beards & eyebrows (see also wire-haired dachshunds and many other breeds) and the jaunty, business-like walk, so they always look as though they're off to attend to some very important mission that just makes me smile. (Beagles have a similar walk, and they always make me smile, too).
Best of all, terriers are clever. Although they're also naughty, they're quite bribeable and quick to learn. And few things are more humbling than being outwitted by your dog.
Of those breeds, if I had to choose, I'd say lakelands are my favourite but probably only because I've had two. I'm sure if I'd had Welsh or Irish terriers, they'd be my favourite.
I also love big, hairy hounds (esp otterhound, wolfhound, deerhound), gundogs (esp spaniels of all types and Irish red & white setters), but imo whippets are superb little dogs.
The current lakie is over 14 now and won't be with us much longer. I'm seriously considering a whippet for my next dog. I'm not sure that I'd be able to cope with the exercise and grooming that lakelands need for the lifespan of another lakie (I'm 64, and have arthritis in hands, knees and hips).
I'd be interested to hear from whippet owners about what they're like to live with, and to train. The lack of grooming and need for a few good sprints a day, rather than a 10 mile hike, is pretty attractive.
