Hello

We at MNHQ are getting a few media queries about whether MNers are worrying about travel over the half-term because of... oh, you know what (Brexit, October 31 'exit' date).

We couldn't see lots of you talking about this elsewhere so please indulge us by answering our poll - in which

YABU = I have cancelled, delayed or avoided half-term travel abroad that I would otherwise have gone ahead with

and

YANBU = the October 31 Brexit/exit date has not affected my travel plans this half term (including those of you who had no intention of travelling abroad then anyway)

Also do feel free to tell us more generally what you think about this issue so that we'll have something to say on the radio

Thank you and apologies for the appallling mis-use of the AIBU poll function

MNHQ x

YANBU.

We will be abroad on the 31st October. Just checked passports and insurance etc to be on the safe side.

RubyMurrayCat · 16/10/2019 18:16

Yabu...a relative has cancelled their annual visit due to the uncertainty.

ScreamingValenta · 16/10/2019 18:20

YANBU

I didn't actually know it was half term that week. I thought half term was next week.

More generally, yes, I am worried about the impact Brexit will have on travel to Europe. Also, not being able to take advantage of buying products that are cheaper in continental Europe anymore.

araiwa · 16/10/2019 18:20

Im flying on 1st november

I will fly with a non eu airline without an eu stopover to hopefully minimise potential problems

RaininSummer · 16/10/2019 18:31

As a person with no kids to worry about now, I find half term itself a right pITA for going anywhere.

nononever · 16/10/2019 18:38

YANBU. We travelled at the last deadline on 31st March without giving it a second thought

Have you been to MN? NM might suit you better. Wink Grin

YABU I purposely haven’t booked anything until it’s ‘over’ as the uncertainty makes me worry about potential problems that we aren’t aware of yet

Pindlesandneedles · 16/10/2019 19:03

YANBU

Andonandonan · 16/10/2019 19:05

YABU we put off going away like we usually would in half term because just too uncertain.

Outsomnia · 16/10/2019 19:14

I may not be typical i.e. no kids to worry about getting back to school after half term, early retired, so not worried about getting back to work etc.

But to me a hard awful terrifying disruptive Brexit will not happen (mark my words!), so I will be abroad during the deadline period and would do so whether or not I was in the position I am fortunate enough to be in. Feck them all, carry on, just like with the terrorism threats. Can't let the buggers defeat us.

They no more want Brexit than many of us do, and that's obvious from all the meetings going on now. If they did, they would have just exited way back when A50 was invoked. Sorry to take this into Brexit discussion territory. But I can't help myself. It is just so phoney now.

Happy Holidays everyone, and enjoy!

TravellingSpoon · 16/10/2019 19:14

We are off 27th-3rd over half term. Booked it on Monday after receiving a refund from Thomas Cook.

I am not bothered.

TravellingSpoon · 16/10/2019 19:15

Off to tenerife I should say.

FawnDrench · 16/10/2019 19:17

YANBU

tinyvulture · 16/10/2019 19:18

We are still going to Mallorca. Mainly because we like to pretend Brexit won’t happen (in the way children cover their eyes in a game of hide and seek and think you can’t see them). Tho you are making me slightly nervous now! 🤣😢

tinyvulture · 16/10/2019 19:20

(It is worth adding that we are lucky enough to own a place out there, so would LOVE to be stranded and unable to return to work. Ditto DD and school.....)

RainbowMum11 · 16/10/2019 19:24

We have a holiday planned but return on 30th Oct so quite relieved!

Smelborp · 16/10/2019 19:24

YABU. We held off making plans for an overseas summer holiday when the deadline was March, and we’ve put off going to Scandinavia now the deadline is October.

bodgeitandscarper · 16/10/2019 19:25

YANBU

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2019 19:37

YABU. We arranged our holidays this year to avoid both the original date and Oct 31st. Because it still seems entirely unclear what the ramifications will be - it just wouldn't be relaxing to travel just then.

We're not tied to school hols now, fortunately, so have just got back from a nice trip to Crete. Sad that next time we travel abroad I'll almost certainly have lost my European citizenship.

JeSuisPoulet · 16/10/2019 19:57

YANBU I avoided the last deadline and haven't felt happy booking a holiday abroad since then as everything is so uncertain, plus the tanking pound increases costs. Add to that the unknown extent of price hikes for food and utility bills in the coming years and I'm worried about budgeting for it. I also hate the idea of being abroad and needing medical assistance and not knowing how expensive everything might be and what we may or may not be covered for; I think insurance companies will flourish alongside the hedge funders though.

JeSuisPoulet · 16/10/2019 19:58

Sorry that was a YABU Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2019 20:01

I reckon they got the YABU/YANBU the wrong way round. Probably just as well the poll didn't work (quite funny and maybe it will now be degremlined)

JeSuisPoulet · 16/10/2019 20:04

I also think it matters where you are in the country - we are in Kent on the A2 and schools in our area have been telling children they cannot guarantee their safety if truckers are backlogged outside. Dd won't be going to school on the 1st Nov while we see how the roads fare. No way in hell would I plan a road trip let alone a trip abroad in early Nov!

Aragog · 16/10/2019 20:04

YANBU - not affected my plans

I am going away over half term, to Italy. We actually arrive back at 10:30pm on the 31st. Hadn't been a factor in our planning though - if dh had had another day's holiday left we'd have gone away til the weekend, so after Brexit date.

Don't have anything planned beyond that at the moment but keep looking. May or may not book before the 31st.
