Hello

We at MNHQ are getting a few media queries about whether MNers are worrying about travel over the half-term because of... oh, you know what (Brexit, October 31 'exit' date).

We couldn't see lots of you talking about this elsewhere so please indulge us by answering our poll - in which

YABU = I have cancelled, delayed or avoided half-term travel abroad that I would otherwise have gone ahead with

and

YANBU = the October 31 Brexit/exit date has not affected my travel plans this half term (including those of you who had no intention of travelling abroad then anyway)

Also do feel free to tell us more generally what you think about this issue so that we'll have something to say on the radio

Thank you and apologies for the appallling mis-use of the AIBU poll function

MNHQ x

I'm flying to krakow on November 11th, hoping Brexit won't affect my plans!!

chinateapot · 16/10/2019 11:21

We have to travel to Germany for medical treatment for a few days just before Brexit and then for 6 weeks just after Brexit.

Things I am concerned about:
The exchange rate crashing still further so that the whole experience costs us even more in living costs
General travel disruption at the airports
Not being able to use mobile roaming any more making phone calls back home much more expensive
Not being able to watch Netflix / now tv in the EU - sounds minor but important when it comes to having a child in hospital to entertain!
How will people in the EU perceive us now?

These are just the things that bother me about that travel. Many many other concerns. If I had any choice I would not be travelling now.

kitk · 16/10/2019 11:21

My DD is spending half term with her dad 200 miles away. I am very nervous about her not being able to get back

30to50FeralHogs · 16/10/2019 11:21

@TheOliphantintheRoom that would probably have only attracted the attention of those who would definitely change their plans due to Brexit though, whereas here they will get a more representative sample as it will attract both those heavily involved and those not so interested in potential Brexit issues.

FriedasCarLoad · 16/10/2019 11:25

YANBU

No changes of plan here.

SpinneyHill · 16/10/2019 11:27

Booked flights for 5th Nov a long time ago, I have had a few minutes of thinking "argh I'm going to have to queue for longer" then I remember I'm British and get a thrill out of standing in lineHmm

That's it though.

ThatMuppetShow · 16/10/2019 11:28

How will people in the EU perceive us now?

the general feeling I have been getting over the last few years has always been: "but you've never been really part of the EU anyway!" Grin

Well, we've always had strict borders and border checks, our own currency, we drive on the wrong side of the road.. so I get their point (even if Brexit is an economical disaster) but for many outsiders, there's no difference.

bloodywhitecat · 16/10/2019 11:31

It's the week after half term for my area so wouldn't have any plans to travel that week anyway.

RhodaDendron · 16/10/2019 11:36

We were hoping to move house rather than go on holiday. Since Brexit seems to have allowed that process to slow to a halt, we would be holidaying instead, except I’ve just sent my daughter’s passport off for urgent renewal. Because of Brexit. So in a roundabout way... yes?

HopefullyAnonymous · 16/10/2019 11:38

We were looking to go away but hadn’t booked. I work for the police and there’s now a block I’m booking leave until at least mid November with the possibility too of cancelled rest days due to potential unrest. No holiday for us!

Pilot12 · 16/10/2019 11:54

YANBU - We are going on holiday next week for two weeks. Our flight out is full. We will be away until after Brexit. We are not worried about what will happen in our absence.

DishingOutDone · 16/10/2019 12:02

MNHQ this isn't very clear - surely if you had no plans to travel whatsoever in the first place, that's a different option to had plans but not bothered/not affected? So either you put three options in or those who had no plans to travel at all don't vote?

WarmSausageTea · 16/10/2019 12:27

YANBU. I’ll be in France for a week, including 31/10, though I think I booked it after the (current) Brexit deadline had been set. Que sera, and all that.

Family was supposed to be travelling from Germany to here on 30th October and return 3rd November by car (so on ferry).
We discussed it - and I told them to put it off for a few months til we know how its going to pan out

BouleBaker · 16/10/2019 12:33

We haven't booked a trip we want to take so that we can wait and see.

forgivemeimnew · 16/10/2019 12:34

YANBU

BeUpStanding · 16/10/2019 12:34

YANBU

Nothing is going to happen on 31st Oct. Nobody in my world is even talking about it. This week I've spoken to a mortgage advisor, a solicitor and other professionals about a significant life decision and it was only afterwards I realised not a single one had even mentioned Brexit.

Bluntness100 · 16/10/2019 12:35

Yanbu.

BeUpStanding · 16/10/2019 12:36

And that fact that nobody on MN was even discussing the potential effect of Brexit & halfterm travel should tell your media enquirers everything they need to know!

HairyFloppins · 16/10/2019 12:36

YANBU. We are going to Efteling that week. Quite happy to be stuck on the mainland.

CJSmith2019 · 16/10/2019 12:41

Tell your media people that you have posters from many many parts of the world 😉

averylongtimeago · 16/10/2019 12:42

We traveled back from the EU a bit early because we didn't want to get caught up in any turmoil nearer the time.
We live in France and feel completely abandoned by the UK government. What will happen to our pensions- health care after retirement- will we even be allowed to stay???- pet passports- the list of things to worry about goes on and on.
The only thing this lot are concerned about is their own bank balance- the rest of us can just drop dead for all they care.

frasersmummy · 16/10/2019 12:45

Its not half term across the whole uk. The majority if not all scottish schools are off this week

The kids up here will be at their desks on the 31st of October

eBooksAreBooks · 16/10/2019 12:46

YANBU. I don't need a passport/visa to cross the Wansum.
