Hello

We at MNHQ are getting a few media queries about whether MNers are worrying about travel over the half-term because of... oh, you know what (Brexit, October 31 'exit' date).

We couldn't see lots of you talking about this elsewhere so please indulge us by answering our poll - in which

YABU = I have cancelled, delayed or avoided half-term travel abroad that I would otherwise have gone ahead with

and

YANBU = the October 31 Brexit/exit date has not affected my travel plans this half term (including those of you who had no intention of travelling abroad then anyway)

Also do feel free to tell us more generally what you think about this issue so that we'll have something to say on the radio

Thank you and apologies for the appallling mis-use of the AIBU poll function

MNHQ x

Midway between. I have plans to visit family in the UK in early November given this year is Norway xmas. I haven't changed my plans but Brexit has given me a WORLD of stress and I've had to sort out a mountain of paperwork that now has to come with me to make sure I can get back into Norway (where I have lived for the past almost 13 years no less..).

Blatherskite · 16/10/2019 13:00

YABU. We may have gone to Europe over half term but have shelved all plans and will stick to the UK now. Even that makes me nervous to be honest.

Blatherskite · 16/10/2019 13:02

Leicestershire (and my sister's kids) are off this week. They'll have been back at school for a week before we break up!

DobbyLovesSocks · 16/10/2019 13:02

YANBU - we were not going away anyway

I doubt Brexit will happen on 31st - maybe I'm cynical

summedup · 16/10/2019 13:03

YANBU.

I'm travelling over Brexit day and back in mid-Nov. I'm an EU national too and I don't think Brexit will affect anything.

I actually don't think we'll be leaving on the 31st anyway but even if we do I don't think there will be major distribution lasting for more than a few days.

SisterSistine · 16/10/2019 13:03

YANBU. We never go abroad in the October half term, we’ll be going away in the UK though. However, we have delayed booking some travel next year as we are worried what the exchange rate will be.

Thehop · 16/10/2019 13:04

CMOTDibbler · 16/10/2019 13:05

YABU - I have altered my work travel plans so I'm not going abroad in the first couple of weeks after Brexit. Nothing to do with half term though!

I live abroad and am not a UK citizen. I had considered travelling to the UK over that time period but decided not to. Even though logically I should be fine to leave the country (they wouldn't want me to stay), it just might be a hassle if officials are very busy not letting people in.

amiapropermum · 16/10/2019 13:10

I brought a trip forward. Have dual UK and Irish citizenship but decided to travel this weekend just in case. I know it's extremely unlikely that travel would be affected.

InOtterNews · 16/10/2019 13:12

I did delay some work-related travel, but now my settled status has come through all my trips are back on

MyRaGaiaStarFishPieA · 16/10/2019 13:17

YANBU

MarkinTime · 16/10/2019 13:21

I'm going home to see family just prior to the 31st and returning here just after.
I can't see that i will have any problems even with a none british passport.

fingers crossed Grin

Flying away on holiday on the 31st

Not worried

NerdyBird · 16/10/2019 13:31

Including people who don't plan to travel anyway will contaminate your data, as most of the reasons for not travelling will be unrelated to Brexit. Who are your media enquiries from?

Erismorn · 16/10/2019 13:34

I haven't cancelled plans, but I am slightly concerned as DD2 is due on the 22nd and my hospital is just off J10 of the M20. I live near to J11 and, if the M20 is knackered then there is no way of avoiding the disruption on either the motorway or the surrounding A and country roads.

If I go overdue to the point of induction then it will be the 1st November.

They are planning to re-implement Operation Brock on the 28th, and if Brexit does happen on the 31st I am apprehensive about the traffic between us and the hospital. I've been warned it could be very quick this time (advice is to call an ambulance if needs be).

I'm aware that mine is an entirely selfish concern, but that doesn't stop it hovering at the back of my mind.

RockinHippy · 16/10/2019 13:36

YABU,

We haven't even bothered to renew our passports, doesn't feel like there was much point until the Brexit shit storm is over

MoonlightBonnet · 16/10/2019 13:40

YABU. We’d have gone away at half term but I don’t want to be waiting in huge queues at airports with small children, which there will be if there’s a no deal Brexit.

RowanMumsnet · 16/10/2019 13:42

@30to50FeralHogs that brings me neatly to another question that's being asked:

Of those of you who do have plans to travel to other EU countries over the next few months, who's confident that they have travel insurance that will cover you/your family for health emergencies (eg if EHIC scheme suddenly no longer applies)

Apologies for the non-appearance of the poll, folks - I think it might not be available to MNHQers Shock

Oh gosh - very best of luck - hope it all goes extremely smoothly

BBC local radio at the moment - we wouldn't present this as anything other than a very rough straw poll of people who happened to see the thread (and happy to include your point about people having other reasons for not travelling)

Would you like one of us to start it for you, LOL

I stopped my son going on an overseas school trip that was due to return on the 31st. Even though they’d make it back a few hours before Brexit, I didn’t want the stress of worrying about potential delays messing that up.
Also the trio became much more expensive than previous years when my older child attended it because of how weak the pound is, due to Brexit, which factored in.
