Hello

We at MNHQ are getting a few media queries about whether MNers are worrying about travel over the half-term because of... oh, you know what (Brexit, October 31 'exit' date).

We couldn't see lots of you talking about this elsewhere so please indulge us by answering our poll - in which

YABU = I have cancelled, delayed or avoided half-term travel abroad that I would otherwise have gone ahead with

and

YANBU = the October 31 Brexit/exit date has not affected my travel plans this half term (including those of you who had no intention of travelling abroad then anyway)

Also do feel free to tell us more generally what you think about this issue so that we'll have something to say on the radio

Thank you and apologies for the appallling mis-use of the AIBU poll function

MNHQ x

didn't want to sort out passports now only go have to do them again possibly within month

Why would you have to do again? Brexit won't affect passports already issued.

Ringdonna · 16/10/2019 14:57

YNBU, I think all this hype is equivalent to the rubbish being spouted about entering the new millenium and planes falling out of the sky.

coconuttelegraph · 16/10/2019 15:03

YNBU, I think all this hype is equivalent to the rubbish being spouted about entering the new millenium and planes falling out of the sky

Who knows whether planes would have fallen out of the sky if millions of person hours hadn't been devoted to making sure that computer system were Y2K compliant? It's not the same thing at all unless you know that some airlines took the risk and didn't bother checking their systems.

Curlyshabtree · 16/10/2019 15:07

We’re still going but will back by B day

LucileDuplessis · 16/10/2019 15:10

YANBU as we didn't have any half term travel plans anyway.

If we had had travel plans, I don't think we'd have cancelled them, but I would certainly be feeling rather nervous.

caringcarer · 16/10/2019 15:13

YANBU was unable to go this half term due to dh poor health. Hoping to go in Feb 1/2 term instead.

Lweji · 16/10/2019 15:16

I've told someone living outside the UK to avoid booking a trip to London between the end of October and the end of the year. Does that count?

My reasoning is that if visas would end up being required (or even passports) they might not get one in time.

NerdyBird · 16/10/2019 15:21

@RowanMumsnet thanks. I do think the point needs making. The outcome will automatically be a larger percentage of people not changing their plans. They may or may not be after a particular angle here, but the bbc is not the bastion of quality journalism it once was.

Lweji · 16/10/2019 15:23

Worst case scenario would be that without any agreement, people might find themselves illegally in a foreign country. Never mind queues at the airport. Unless agreements pre-dating entry to the EU would prevail upon no-deal Brexit.

TenPenceMix · 16/10/2019 15:43

YABU for the kiss at the end. Smile

Grasspigeons · 16/10/2019 15:45

We dont holiday this time ofvyear snyway, but DH has avoided business trips over this period.

MoonlightBonnet · 16/10/2019 15:46

@Ringdonna hahaha. You know what happened with y2k? People identified the potential problem and worked very hard to fix it so the problems didn’t happen. The equivalent would be stopping Brexit, not pretending it won’t change anything.

bellinisurge · 16/10/2019 15:48

Somebody trying to get in a sneaky game of Brexit Bingo by punting the y2k bollocks @TheElementsSong Grin

olivesnutsandcheese · 16/10/2019 15:52

Yanbu. We're going to France and flying back on November 1st. Hopefully they don't lock us in a cage or anything.
If I'm really honest, I didn't even think about the b word when we bookedGrin

thisisthetime · 16/10/2019 15:56

YANBU. We fly back into the UK from a Non-EU country on the 31st October. We weren’t aware of the extension when we booked. We land in the early hours of November 1. Hoping there are not any delays but wouldn’t consider changing our plans.

Elphame · 16/10/2019 15:57

Flights booked a couple of weeks ago. We will be in the US over the 31st October - not letting it affect our plans at all

@coconuttelegraph

From what I remember when it was introduced an individual poster doesn't choose to have voting buttons, it's determined by MNHQ for certain posters.

Right I think I've got to the bottom of this now: everyone (including me apparently) should see the option to start a poll when they start a thread in AIBU (see screenshot attached)

However it seems slightly shonky and doesn't always appear - we're seeing if we can work out what's happening

Is MNHQ BU to ask you to answer this question?

@Timeywimey10

YABU @RowanMumsnet for starting this thread here because there is a Brexit board to which MNHQ has regularly shifted threads for the past 3.5 years Agreed!

Get the feeling there's a backstory here Grin I know when I worked on the site/mod team, we were pretty constantly being asked by some users to move xx sort of threads into xx topic, then getting complaints from others about xx sort of threads being moved. (For ages we used to get people reporting AIBU threads as not being proper AIBUs...)

It's one of those situations where we can't please everyone - there will be people who are sick to the back teeth of Brexit and really don't want to see any discussions about it, so they'll have the Brexit board hidden and would like to have all Brexit threads in there. And there will be people who want to have those discussions on the wider boards. And there will be those who absolutely do not care either way.

In this case though we wanted to get as wide a range of responses to the q so posting here made sense

Also I wanted to do a POLL

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 16/10/2019 16:13

I have the voting turned off. I had no intention of travelling abroad anyway.

Gillian1980 · 16/10/2019 16:14

Yanbu

tealady · 16/10/2019 16:15

Going to Paris by eurostar for the weekend 1-3 Nov. Did vaguely think 'What about Brexit?' but decided not to let 'fear of Brexit' stop us going. Grin We do have travel insurance as I would for any trip outside the uk. Coincidentally we were traveling to Europe on 31 May 2019 (original Brexit date) and that was fineWink

taytosandwich · 16/10/2019 16:38

I can't see polls for some reason! But anyway I wasn't going anywhere because I can't afford but also I'm in NI and I'm too worried to go anywhere because of Brexit and can't even go down to the Republic for a weekend now because the pound is so week against the Euro. THANKS BORIS et al

JocastaJones · 16/10/2019 16:38

Didn't change plans as such but not tempted to even consider a trip with that looming. Have no need to travel and can't be arsed dealing with the potential queues and disruption.

Likewise putting off booking any future trips until we see what happens. I'm also thinking that if bookings drop off enough there might be some bargains about.

Lexilooo · 16/10/2019 18:03

We have specifically avoided booking any travel around 31st Oct and the previous brexit dates. It seems an unnecessary risk. Even if it is just delays and inconvenience, why not just travel at a less stressful time? But more importantly effects of Brexit are unlikely to be covered by insurance so it could be very expensive.
