Hello

We at MNHQ are getting a few media queries about whether MNers are worrying about travel over the half-term because of... oh, you know what (Brexit, October 31 'exit' date).

We couldn't see lots of you talking about this elsewhere so please indulge us by answering our poll - in which

YABU = I have cancelled, delayed or avoided half-term travel abroad that I would otherwise have gone ahead with

and

YANBU = the October 31 Brexit/exit date has not affected my travel plans this half term (including those of you who had no intention of travelling abroad then anyway)

Also do feel free to tell us more generally what you think about this issue so that we'll have something to say on the radio

Thank you and apologies for the appallling mis-use of the AIBU poll function

MNHQ x

YANBU. Wasn't planning to travel then as my DC are pre-school age so we avoid school hols anyway. I wouldn't have planned anything that left us abroad at that point though.

KenAdams · 16/10/2019 13:54

Leicesters October half term is a different week to everyone elses and falls this week so we're fine!

WhoCaresWins01 · 16/10/2019 13:57

YABU
We have been looking for somewhere last minute for the last week of October, would have considered France but decided to stay in UK due to potential issues crossing the channel.

Roussette · 16/10/2019 13:58

YANBU

I fly abroad on 31st October. I don't envisage any problems except maybe longer passport control queues when I return.

Just hoping I'm in the middle of a bad dream and this stooopid Brexit idea will've gone away by the time I get back a week later.

Erismorn · 16/10/2019 14:03

@RowanMumsnet thanks. If it comes to it then my lovely neighbour is a retired midwife 😂

DH works in France (commutes daily) and is very relieved that paternity leave is likely to coincide with whatever may happen.

RowanMumsnet · 16/10/2019 14:11

@Somerville

Apologies for the non-appearance of the poll, folks - I think it might not be available to MNHQers Grin Grin

Would you like one of us to start it for you, LOL

Being able to use Talk functions really should be one of the perks of this job...

I’m picturing this kicking off against the tech department, with mods holding a demo, editors starting a petition and HR making little “accidents” with tech payslips Grin

YANBU. We will be in Ireland for half term. But we also have Irish citizenship.
That said, I will be ensuring we keep a full tank of petrol in case we need to skedaddle back to the UK (via ferry) earlier than planned.

Digitalash · 16/10/2019 14:29

YANBU

ElenadeClermont · 16/10/2019 14:30

YABU. We do not dare to visit family abroad and drop early Christmas presents at half-term as usual, as we cannot afford to miss days in our work and DS's school.

Yabu- we will be going somewhere on 2 November but waiting to see what happens first. Will do a UK break if need be.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 16/10/2019 14:37

YANBU
@RowanMumsnet

I've never had an option of voting on anything. Is there something I need to enable in my settings, have I offended MN or is it just that the whole world hates me?
I suspect there's a whole bunch of things I don't understand about this but some AIBU threads definitely, definitely have polls on (I'm not imagining that. Am I?)

Usually I think it's up to the OP whether to include a poll or not - you get prompted to make a choice about whether to include one when you start an AIBU thread.*

*Unless you work here, APPARENTLY

Yabu

We personally have decided not to go away on or around 31st October as we were worried. DH was initially very tempted as he looked at doing something and was surprised at the cost of flying on 1st November being so low. (we have an inset day on the Monday so we could have had a long weekend).

I was also talking to two people about this, this morning. (Unprompted by me - it was raised by someone else).

One had been advised by her dad not to book anything until Brexit was sorted. (She didn't vote, but is leave leaning herself)

The other was extremely worried about prices going up on food, and was waiting to see what was happening.

mum11970 · 16/10/2019 14:40

YNBU, no changes here

SaintEyning · 16/10/2019 14:40

YANBU. No plans to go away but would not worry about it - we were away in thailand over the original Brexit date of 31 March which we booked after it was announced but before it was extended. Had thought about nipping over to Paris for a couple of days at the end of half term and hadn’t give it a second thought. But ended up booking a fun activity for DS which means we have to stay here all week.

Somerville · 16/10/2019 14:40

It’s quite a new thing flouncy. I’ve never voted nor set up a poll so I don’t know how it works. Now I hear that it’s a privilege MNers have that HQers don’t I might try though Grin

Timeywimey10 · 16/10/2019 14:43

When I realised the new Brexit Day was in the middle of half term I didn't bother booking anything.

I've booked a week away in May half term, but only in Scotland.

YABU @RowanMumsnet for starting this thread here because there is a Brexit board to which MNHQ has regularly shifted threads for the past 3.5 years Agreed!

Doyoumind · 16/10/2019 14:43

I wouldn't usually travel abroad during October half term anyway but Brexit wouldn't have stopped me if I wanted to.

YANBU. I'm increasingly blasé about the whole thing. I'm not sure if I'm built of softer stuff than others but I have expended all my give-a-fuck reserves on Brexit. Until anything actually happens you can find me with my head stuck firmly in the sand.

BiBiBirdie · 16/10/2019 14:48

YABU
Not changed anything for the half term but decided not to send my DCs on their school French trip as frankly, I didn't want to sort out passports now only go have to do them again possibly within months. Also don't think we are going to be very popular after the B word happens so felt strongly we would wait and see. Apparently, the uptake of the trip is significantly lower than other years, so it's not just us concerned.

coconuttelegraph · 16/10/2019 14:52

From what I remember when it was introduced an individual poster doesn't choose to have voting buttons, it's determined by MNHQ for certain posters.

The stae schools in my area have half term next week so unaffected by Brexit, I'd guess that's the case for a large number of schools so not surprising that no one's posting about it.
