It really drives me mad. You are obviously mainly famous or successful because of connections. I know some are them are talented but surely connections of parents help. David Hasslehoff's daughter has said it. Kelly Osborne, Lilly Allen and loads more.

If Richard and Judy thought they could make a few bob endorsing a tennis camp, they would 100% do it.

Re sons and daughters of actors possibly being more talented than their famous parents: it’s not about that, is it? It’s about how many equally, or more, talented people never get a look in because the sons and daughters in question leverage their connections to grab the best acting jobs in which it is possible to shine.

Jared Harris, son of Richard, was bloody brilliant in Chernobyl

Iamthewombat · 18/10/2019 19:16

Once more, yes, perhaps he was brilliant in Chernobyl but how many other actors might have been brilliant in Chernobyl had they had Jared Harris’s connections?

Wasn’t he married to Emilia Fox for a while? I bet I know what they talked about: how difficult it was for them to deal with accusations of nepotism. Hahahahaha!

Iamthewombat · 18/10/2019 19:17

Jared Harris is the son of Richard Harris. Richard Harris’s niece, Annabelle Wallis, got the part of Grace in Peaky Blinders. Fancy that! Yes, she was good, but how did she get her start in the business I wonder?

EntropyRising · 18/10/2019 19:27

Once more, yes, perhaps he was brilliant in Chernobyl but how many other actors might have been brilliant in Chernobyl had they had Jared Harris’s connections?

I don't think anyone could have even touched his performance. He was simply born to act.

MarshaBradyo · 18/10/2019 19:30

I had no idea he had a family connection. His voice is so distinctive.

EntropyRising · 18/10/2019 19:35

Richard/Jarred Harris make me believe that talent is heritable.

IcedPurple · 18/10/2019 19:42

He was simply born to act.

As another poster said, nobody is 'born to act'. You don't emerge from the womb reciting 'To be or not to be...." You may have some sort of natural talent but without opportunities to develop and practice that talent, it will go nowhere. Of course, if you're the privately educated son of a very famous actor, those opportunities will come your way a lot more easily than if you're the son of a bus driver and attend your local comp.

Richard/Jarred Harris make me believe that talent is heritable.

And Max Irons makes me believe the exact opposite.

Everyone uses their connections to get their family jobs (whether you agree with it or not.)
Looking after your own is human nature.
There's really no difference from getting a leg up in the acting world due to your parents being in the industry than there is to your parent being management at Asda & getting you a job on the checkout there.
It's the way of the world.

Iamthewombat · 18/10/2019 20:15

So that’s all right then. It’s the way of the world. Would you say that if you, or one of your children, lost out on a job where they were the best candidate because of connections? Would you philosophically say, well, that’s the way of the world?

Thought not.

You may not have noticed that for the last 150 years people have been making efforts to eradicate nepotism. In other words, not accepting that nepotism and ‘looking after your own’ is the way of the world. Even in Victorian times, the government acted to prevent civil service jobs being given to relatives of powerful people. I doubt it was motivated by a desire for social equality, though: more likely the plum civil service jobs were going to posh thickos who messed things up, but you get the point, I’m sure. Stand up for yourself.

JaimeBronde · 18/10/2019 23:30

I'm being the devil's advocate.
On one hand yes it is bloody unfair & it's good that we are trying to make the world more equal.
But on the other hand if my extremely talented actress daughter gets the job over over the other extremely talented actress because the film director is my sister/brother or friend. Then it's tough, survival of the fittest & all that.
And yes it would be tough for my equally as talented DD if she didn't get the job over say Gwyneth Paltrow just because Gwyneth is friends with the director and yes I would be a bit put out.
What would make me extremely furious would be if my DD lost out to someone who was a rubbish actor or not even interested in acting say Paris Hilton for example just because Paris was friends with the director.

Personally when it comes down to 'the professions' e.g. law, medicine, accountancy, fast track civil service even politics etc it should be down to merit & capability.
Politics especially. If MPs salary's were double or even triple or quadruple then I believe you would get more normal/ordinary people who really care about our country as MPs. Rather than the rich or aristos who come from money & do politics just to have power & prestige & sod the country. I'm looking at the likes of BoJo & JRM compared to Thatcher & May.

Pretty sure ASDA don’t literally ban anyone without certain connections from even looking at job listings.

Who is banning who?

You get or find an agent then just like a writer has too.

My DD attended a long running theatre school with a casting agency attached. So yes she was lucky in the respect that if she wanted to pursue acting as a career then she had the opportunity to pursue it, well to see how far she could go.
However DD was just doing it as a hobby & eventually decided that she didn't want to be a professional actor.

Probably less than 1% of all paid acting jobs are advertised. And charging people the same mandatory fee but only letting them see a small number of job adverts while others are charged the same rate and get to see all of them is clearly discriminatory.

I do agree with you on this.

JaimeBronde · 19/10/2019 04:06

Many publishing houses will not accept a manuscript from a first time writer unless the writer has a agent. It's not just about contracts. Agents can get your manuscript through the publishing house door. Whether your book gets accepted or not depends on how good it is & fits the publisher.
Yet if you or me pitched a photography book (& our photos are probably brilliant compared to Brooklyn Beckham's) it wouldn't get published unless our parents are very famous like the Beckhams.
Now the fact Brooklyn has dropped out of his professional photography course (don't know the exact reasons why) is annoying as someone far more talented could have had that place.
So I do see the unfairness.
But life isn't fair & you have to fight for what you want. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
So it's not a just a case of giving up or rolling over & accepting the status quo.

Andylion · 19/10/2019 04:17

DH went to a talk by Rhianna Pratchett - she acknowledges the name got her through the door but also that it didn't keep her in the room that was hard work

I remember years ago reading an article about nepotism. Famous child of famous person said, "Yes, my name got me through the door but the rest I did myself."

Another famous child of another famous person said, "Getting through the door is 99% of it,"

I wish I could remember who said what. Confused

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 19/10/2019 04:22

Prince Nikolai of Denmark is a model for Dior
( I think his stepfather was a photographer)
No idea how he got his break

Kids of famous people saying they are famous in their own right!
JaimeBronde · 19/10/2019 05:17

I think he was approached by his model agency Scoop. Don't know if his stepfather (at the time) worked for them.
Curly I feel we've wandered off our usual thread 😂

SerenDippitty · 19/10/2019 06:09

You need a lot of luck to make it as an actor, whether that be having a famous parent or something else.

Iamthewombat · 19/10/2019 07:41

You need a great deal less luck if you have connections in the industry though, eh?
