To think Upfield Global (Flora marg) can get stuffed for calling mumsnet a hate site?

No more Flora for me, they’ve just announced they’re having nothing to do with the hate site mumsnet. mobile.twitter.com/StopFundingHate/status/1182647264046669824

Twitter is a method of communication most companies use - the former relationship with mum set was very different (specific advertising campaigns and prod t trials)

Oh stop it now. It’s ALL advertising. If you’re not being deliberately obtuse, you’re being disingenuous. Neither is a good look

It’s still advertising, please stop digging.

NotBadConsidering · 13/10/2019 14:17

Just realised I have a double negative with my does not equal sign. Hmm Oh well. If I was being pre-moderated maybe that wouldn’t have got through.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 13/10/2019 14:20

Twitter allows misogyny, racism, disablism, porn and yes, what I would class transphobia all over the place.

Why don't Flora disassociate themselves from Twitter by using another 'method of communication'? Why is it only mumsnet they don't want to be associated with?

NotBadConsidering · 13/10/2019 14:20

“We are not going to use Twitter as a form of communication because we don’t share the values of hosting paedophiles, porn and hatred of women”

Said no company ever.

Toorahtoorahaye · 13/10/2019 14:58

So what passes for transphobia- I really find it harder and harder to take claims of transphobia serious at all with each passing day. I don’t have to be polite about and respect people who have batshit crazy beliefs and who constantly attack those who believe differently to them. Be assured, they do not respect anyone who disagrees with them.

And yes this is why women are starting to get angry and are speaking out on a place like mumsnet

OP posts:
Toorahtoorahaye · 13/10/2019 15:17

Where else can they speak?

I think Flora can say whatever they like really. Someone saying you are transphobic or even that the site you post on is, doesn’t make it true. I think they can crack on with removing their advertising because frankly without a huge apology, I don’t want them advertising here. I won’t be buying their products again, because just like them I want to choose where I spend my money. Flora is incompatible with free discussion of women’s concerns about the impact of self ID. They want stricter controls on what is said. I don’t. We can go our different ways.
I really do hope MNetters around the world just quietly withdraw their custom.

HQ, very well done. Justices response was very good. We are proud of you. Gin

SleepyKat · 13/10/2019 15:23

To be honest I think MNHQ should be more ethical in choosing who they allow to advertise on their site. Should they really be allowing companies who are chopping down the rain forests for palm oil to advertise here? I’d rather not see that sort of association.

MN should have kicked Flora into touch years ago. Good fucking riddance.

bathsheba12 · 13/10/2019 16:45

awful product anyway- but will make sure i don't buy anything they are behind

OhWhatACarveUp · 13/10/2019 18:48

I don't know about transphobia, but I do think there is a lot of aggressive language around transgender issues on MN. It sometimes feels as if everyone ends up getting snarky and ultimately shouting at each other on this issue. I've seen it on here.

My theory is that those most invested in the issue often come at it as if we're all on twitter, where there is a lot of hate and aggression, and it spills over here, where it's not necessary. It's feels a bit as if people are hanging out in these "Britain's hardest boozer" pubs, and when they walk into a quiet village pub and the landlord asks them what'd they'd like, they (metaphorically) punch the landlord.

WeirdCatLady · 13/10/2019 18:51

Well I’ve just chucked my flora buttery in the bin. Off to research a decent alternative. Way to shoot your company in the foot Hmm

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/10/2019 18:51

I’d love to see the sales stats (I do love stats though).

OhWhatACarveUp · 13/10/2019 19:02

Way to shoot your company in the foot

Realistically, this isn’t the case. Firstly it’s a big company. Secondly the detail (if anything gets through to the broader public) is “Upfield is a progressive company”. The customers it loses from MN FWR will likely be made up from other sources

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 13/10/2019 19:10

But we're the target market! I'd get that if it were a company selling blue hair dye or directional denim but marge? Don't piss off women aged 25 - 60 if you want to sell marge!

youllhavehadyourtea · 13/10/2019 19:11

Interesting article from the Guardian about why Unilever ditched Flora.
www.theguardian.com/business/2017/apr/06/unilever-flora-stork-kraft-heinz-bid

Seems the Spreads market share is very much in decline. Looks like every lost FWR customer might count after all.

zebrasdontwearbras · 13/10/2019 19:17

"Progressives" - ha - I was called "progressive" as an insult a short while ago, when arguing lefty politics, remain, pro-immigration, pro-refugees etc.. Now I'm called a terf and "right wing" - all because I don't believe that self ID should become law, and because I think women's rights matter. How times change.

I don't know about the "progressives" - I sincerely doubt this will result in a rush of sales from those who've never bought it - just because they've stopped their association with Mumsnet. They'll just gloat on twitter - not actually buy the stuff.

Datun · 13/10/2019 19:18

Firstly it’s a big company. Secondly the detail (if anything gets through to the broader public) is “Upfield is a progressive company”.

That's not how it's being portrayed to the broader public in mainstream media.

One activist Helen Islan, who uses the pseudonym Mimmymum on Twitter, tweeted: 'I like Flora but there is absolutely no way I am going to buy it while it is partnering with Mumsnet which platforms nasty, trans-hostile posts on its website.'

Ms Islan was previously embroiled in controversy after complaints she made to police about a transsexual, Miranda Yardley, resulted in Britain's first hate crime prosecution. The case was thrown out and costs awarded to Yardley.

Karen Ingala-Smith, chief executive of a women's domestic violence charity in London, said: 'I find the expectation that women who share motherhood don't have the right to talk about anything political beyond motherhood absolutely sexist, patriarchal nonsense.

Lifeof333s · 13/10/2019 19:19

Really don’t think a load of London based middle class mums are Flora’s target market.😂

Butchyrestingface · 13/10/2019 19:20

I'm devastated. I've been eating Flora all my life. 🥺🥺🥺

Looks like I'm going to have to start eating ACTUAL BUTTER for the very first time.

🎵 It's the end of an era 🎵

Datun · 13/10/2019 19:20

I mean it's not good look, when you are opposing the chief exec of a women's domestic violence charity.

FeckOffGraham · 13/10/2019 19:23

Really don’t think a load of London based middle class mums are Flora’s target market.

A lot of middle class vegans in London though... middle class vegans who won't be buying that shite anymore.

Lifeof333s · 13/10/2019 19:25

Middle class vegans don’t buy Flora, they buy Pure.

zebrasdontwearbras · 13/10/2019 19:29

Mumsnetters are not all middle class Londoners - why on earth do you think this?

FeckOffGraham · 13/10/2019 19:30

Middle class vegans don’t buy Flora, they buy Pure

Well that's me told!
