To think there's a link between climate change denial and Leave voters?

Listening to Nigel Farage 'climate scepticism ' on the radio last night and all his fans agreeing with him. I think Nigel Farage has also said the doctors are wrong about smoking. Baffling why anyone would take his view seriously. Anyway, every climate change denier I've heard of is also a Leaver. AIBU to think they're connected?

Well actually not that far fetched in my opinion. The American conservative republicans i.e Dick Cheney actively re marketed global warming as the 'softer' climate change for Bush v Gore elections. After all measures aimed at reducing climate emissions are not helpful for pro capitalist policy makers seeking to reduce regulation particularly in oil and gas sector. So let's deny climate change and while we're at it start a war with Iraq so we can obtain their oil fields. So back to Blighty and history is seemingly repeating itself climate change still in the way of US business goals, however to spice things up instead of a war the UK government is going to allow certain MPs to short the UK economy. Anyone with substantial investments in US dollars will do very well from no deal Brexit. Did I mention Trump hates climate change. Funny that..... So yes right wing conservativism and anti climate change rhetoricare linked but the average Joe public probably doesn't realise why. 🤷

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 08/10/2019 16:59

Anecdotally I'd tend to agree. But I doubt that there's any evidence to establish it one way or the other. You need to get a list of British climate-change deniers and then ask them their views on brexit Grin

(I'm pretty sure that there must be a discussion forum for them somewhere.)

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 08/10/2019 17:04

Nope, sorry. I'm both a leaver and very invested in saving the planet. Dh the same. So that's two.

Unless I've misunderstood the original post I'd say that this is the wrong way round. My sense is that climate-change deniers are likely to be brexitiers, not vice versa.

(Just as I would guess that any racist is brexitier, incidentally, not that every brexitier is a racist.)

We have to be brexitiers now? Sounds dangerously French to me.

Zampa · 08/10/2019 17:28

Boris is a figurehead leaver and recently called climate change activists "uncooperative crusties".

He was playing to his audience.

Pitterpatterpettysteps · 08/10/2019 17:29

Remainers are probably more likely to say all the right things when it comes to the environment, but continue driving their 4x4s, shopping at Ocado (which is dreadful environment BTW) and keeping their carbon footprint ticking over with multiple flights a year...

BertrandRussell · 08/10/2019 17:29

I was just admiring brexitier, and considering it with another e. And an accent on the second e- Brexitière- comme ça.

EileenBilton · 08/10/2019 17:37

Idontwanttotalk
YABU unless you can provide evidence to support your viewpoint.

Agree. I have no time at all for unsupported statements. So I did a quick google and found the following, from British Social Attitudes 35, published last year:

Those who voted leave are much less likely to be very or extremely worried about climate change (17%) than those who voted for the UK to remain (32%). This partly reflects a more fundamental divide with respect to belief in the existence of climate change. Some 71% of Remain voters think that climate change is definitely happening, compared with just 53% of Leave voters.

So there is indeed evidence to suggest that leave voters are more likely to be climate change deniers. But this is by no means true of all of them.

BritWifeinUSA · 08/10/2019 17:37

I voted to leave. The vote happened just before I left the UK. Over here, DH and I vote Green Party. I used to vote Green in the UK. It might surprise people to know that it is possible to want to do what’s right for the planet as well as not want to be shackled to the EU. We don’t need to be in the EU to save the planet. Brits are capable of independent thinking on that matter.

magicmallow · 08/10/2019 17:39

I agree OP!

DianneWhatcock · 08/10/2019 17:40

Yanbu I have definitely noticed this

hellenbackagen · 08/10/2019 17:41

So your control group consists of the one person you know op?

Yeah that's scientific. Hmm.

Fuck me. Is this for real?

BertrandRussell · 08/10/2019 17:44

That’s useful @EileenBilton- thank you.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 08/10/2019 17:53

Wrong way round! From the original post:

There seems to be a lack of either reading or comprehension involved in this thread! Can we please identify climate-change deniers who think the UK should remain in the EU. That would help to establish that the OP IBU.

Eileen wins the internet today.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/10/2019 17:54

Naughty @EileenBilton

very or extremely worried about climate change about is far different from disbelieving

From the same report:

^93% of people believe that the world’s climate is definitely or
probably changing.^

So that puts paid to Leavers being Non Believers

What did someone say about unthinking ? Pshaw!

If you want to proive a corrrelation at least use stats honestly! Whichever way you bloody voted!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/10/2019 17:54

Eileen wins the internet today. Except she doesn't! She just shows that she is a very naughty girl!

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 08/10/2019 17:54

Total rubbish OP.

Patroclus · 08/10/2019 18:39

There is- fossil fuel companies lobby things like newpaper owners and right wing politicians who in turn print bullshit conspiracy theories or enact policy, much s they did with anti EU lies. These lot never seem to top to question why they're all of the same political persuasion.

And to all those whining, give it a bloody rest. Brexit and CC denial have both been scientifically and economically shown up a idiotic. I will say what I like about it and those who make stupid decisions which affect all of us. You chose to support lies and leaders with no morals, either admit you were wrong or live with valid criticism.

Patroclus · 08/10/2019 18:40

'There is a deep-rooted connection between UK climate science deniers and those campaigning for Britain to leave the European Union.'

No

EileenBilton · 08/10/2019 18:43

CuriousaboutSamphire
very or extremely worried about climate change about is far different from disbelieving.

Correct. The statement concerning belief is this one:

Some 71% of Remain voters think that climate change is definitely happening, compared with just 53% of Leave voters.

Note this specifically refers to the statement that climate change is "definitely happening". I haven't read the full report, as I was just doing an idle google and now I'm off out. But on a quick skim I didn't find any further analysis correlating climate change belief vs denialism with voting status in the referendum so that's the best I could find in terms of actual evidence relating to the OP's contention.

ChiaraRimini · 08/10/2019 18:45

Well there's a link between stupid and stupid...

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 08/10/2019 18:52

I remember there being a study that said the strongest belief correlating with Leave was a support for capital punishment?
Don't know if that survey asked about climate change.

But if you really wanted to halt climate change, surely you'd be broadly in favour of more international cooperation? Britain is going to make sod all difference by itself, 28 countries working together more effective

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 08/10/2019 18:53

I’m a passionate remainer. Am gutted at what is happening.

I’m also a climate change denier
