As in people in places such as Richmond, Kingston (insisting they live in Surrey) or places such as Bromley (insisting they are in Kent).

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Is is snobbery? They usually drone only about postal towns which also no longer exist.

@SomethingSpecialzz

Royal mail official address finder disagrees with him.

Maybe the Post Office should update addresses so people don't get confused Confused

I'm in Sutton and obvs call it London. The 'Welcome to Surrey' sign is a 10-min walk away.

MaeveDidIt · 06/10/2019 19:55

Does it honestly really matter.
I lived in Claygate, Surrey and Richmond was in Surrey.
It's not a snobbery thing at all in my case.

Svalberg · 06/10/2019 19:55

And to the PP, large parts of Merton are also SM4, CR4 postcodes - and even some SW17, including the council offices which are SM4 Grin

DonnaDarko · 06/10/2019 19:59

I used to live in Bromley and used to call it Kent. Cos it is....

When I lived in Croydon, I said I lived in Surrey.

I once lived in Brixton and called it London.

Can you see the pattern lol.

JoJoSM2 · 06/10/2019 20:02

Does it honestly really matter.

Not really. I find it annoying. Up there with the 12am/pm.

Grumpyperson · 06/10/2019 20:05

MIL lives in Lewisham but postal address is Bromley Kent.

I used to live in Surrey but postal address was Hampshire. Royal Mail doesn't always agree with county boundaries.

As someone pointed out, Surrey CC is in Kingston, not Guildford where you'd probably expect it.

Sutton is Surrey for me.

Aozora13 · 06/10/2019 20:11

To be fair it’s bloody confusing! You’ve got your administrative counties and your ceremonial counties some of which correspond geographically and some of which don’t. And don’t even get me started on unitary authorities. I think it’s fair enough to say eg Bexley is in Kent or in London.

firawla · 06/10/2019 20:11

We’re in a London Borough, but have Middlesex in the address. I would never say “I’m from Middlesex” though as that’s pretty meaningless. I generally say London although it’s not a London postcode, but not sure my specific zone 5/6 area would mean a lot to most people so london or outer London is clearer

Lindy2 · 06/10/2019 20:12

Surrey CC are planning to move from Kingston. They've realised that perhaps they should actually be based in Surrey after all.

scittlescatter · 06/10/2019 20:14

A lot of places are borderline. Eg Romford in Essex/London.

It's a London borough but also in Essex with an Essex postal address.

zebrasdontwearbras · 06/10/2019 20:14

YABU!

That DA postcode you posted is DARTFORD. I live in Kent, and people here would think you were crazy if you called somewhere with a Dartford postcode "London".

Bexleyheath is in Kent. Screenshot to prove even google thinks so Wink

Sallyseagull · 06/10/2019 20:15

I just dont understand what's annoying about people doing that? 🤷🏼‍♀️

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 06/10/2019 20:19

I think the boundaries are very wavy navy these days. Especially with postcodes and with TfL services blurring the boundaries with Surrey. I grew up near Sutton (but very much in Surrey). I class it as Greater London although the postal county is Surrey. It claims Surrey/London allegiance depending on what suits it. Similarly, my friend in Bromley says she lives in Kent.

Kingston is London - all the local logo stuff announces it as a London Borough - although I work there & return address work post to Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. It has a KT post code- loads of proper Surrey out to past Effingham has KT post codes! I have a KT postcode & grew up in an SM postcode but I'm definitely in Surrey. I say "the London end" to explain it to people who don't know where places are.

Rosehip10 · 06/10/2019 20:21

@zebrasdontwearbras ...."WAS" in the county of kent!

MidiMitch · 06/10/2019 20:22

@MollyButton there is a Grammar School in Reigate which is in Surrey.

Reigate Grammar is not a state grammar school - it's an independent school

AutumnRose1 · 06/10/2019 20:27

With you OP

I live in London with a London postcode and tel number.

I don't go round telling people I live in Shropshire. Wish I did, but the facts are the facts!

I don't know the history behind certain places being referred to as a London Borough though. I think Croydon is a London Borough?

JoJoSM2 · 06/10/2019 20:28

Does it depend on age? Maybe it's the older generation that think they live in Surrey/Kent if they live somewhere that has been a part of London for 50-60 years?

LolaSmiles · 06/10/2019 20:29

This thread is eye opening and is highlighting my total ignorance of the South East.
I'd have said anything within the M25 was London. Blush

MsLumley · 06/10/2019 20:29

I grew up in Wimbledon. Used to go shopping in Kingston. Grandparents lived in Sutton. To me, we lived in London (SW postcode), Kingston (KT) was Surrey, as was Sutton (SM). Whether that's geographically or legally correct or not I didn't know then and still don't now - that's just how it was and nothing to do with snobbery. As this thread has proven there's a lot of mixed views on the London/Surrey border.

Anyway surely nowadays it's more snobby to say you live in London.

AutumnRose1 · 06/10/2019 20:32

JoJo, I hear it among 20 somethings, don't think it's generational.

I don't think it's snobby to say I live in London, I mostly think of gangs etc. Reality is there are screaming drunks outside my block of flats right now! Well, I assume they're drunk....

If someone said they lived in Kent or Surrey, I immediately think of somewhere nice!

UnoriginalUserName948 · 06/10/2019 20:33

You don't get this with Essex. People living in rainham, upminster, gidea park all seem to say they're from London!
Upminster is 100% London. Rainham is Essex. Gildea Park I'm on the fence, although it is within the M25 at least- people from Romford seem to be split as to if it's Essex or London (I say London, personally)
Source: Grew up in Rainham area, worked in Romford for a while (am now in Kent, but properly in Kent, nowhere near Essex or London so no confusion!)

AutumnRose1 · 06/10/2019 20:34

I'm originally an Essex girl, would never describe any of those places as London.

Wotrewelookinat · 06/10/2019 20:35

Used to live in Wallington, postcode SM6. London Borough of Sutton but also Surrey. I’ve moved to east anglia and now tell people I used to live in south London/surrey border. Similarly , but on a much smaller scale, I now have an ipswich postcode but live outside of Ipswich, nearer to a different town, so it doesn’t feel right to tell people I live in Ipswich.

OhTheRoses · 06/10/2019 20:37

Hmm. We live in Surrey (Epsom & Ewell). We also have a London phone number.
