As in people in places such as Richmond, Kingston (insisting they live in Surrey) or places such as Bromley (insisting they are in Kent).

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Is is snobbery? They usually drone only about postal towns which also no longer exist.

I don't really understand what your point is.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/10/2019 18:39

I'm originally from Bromley. I describe it as South London border... And get told it's not real London.

You can't win.

bellajay · 06/10/2019 18:39

Probably a bit of snobbery but also saying ‘I live in Kingston’ is a bit meaningless to those aren’t familiar with the area, while ‘I live in London’ isn’t a very helpful descriptor either. It’s probably just the simplest thing to say.

MollyButton · 06/10/2019 18:40

I get it - and get rage when people talk about Surrey grammar schools, when there are no grammar schools in Surrey (just in Croydon, Sutton etc.). No one talks about Southwark being in Surrey, but it was until about 100 years ago.

JulietTango · 06/10/2019 18:41

I grew up in Barking. It's a London Borough but the address is Essex. What would you suggest I tell people?Confused

AnxietyDream · 06/10/2019 18:42

I live in Greater London (Kent).

If I described it as London I'd be laughed at by proper Londoners. My house is surrounded by fields FFS.

(I do say London to people abroad etc, as they are more likely to have heard of it).

Orangedaisy · 06/10/2019 18:42

I always say I love in Surrey, in the bit that’s in Croydon too. No one could ever consider me posh by hearing that, and it’s accurate.

Orangedaisy · 06/10/2019 18:43

TheSilveryPussycat · 06/10/2019 18:43

My DF and DB both have Surrey as part of their addresses. They are in the Borough of Croydon.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 06/10/2019 18:44

You don't get this with Essex. People living in rainham, upminster, gidea park all seem to say they're from London!

calmpuppycrazykids · 06/10/2019 18:44

i used to live in Kingston upon thames
When we wrote our address it was
number road
Kingston upon thames
surrey
postcode

FuzzyPuffling · 06/10/2019 18:45

There used to be two descriptors - "Concrete Kent" and "Rural Kent" to separate them!
Bexleyheath is a very long way from Canterbury!

DGRossetti · 06/10/2019 18:45

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Reminds me of Russell Grant pushing for people to (still) use "Middlesex" on letters ...

fluffygal · 06/10/2019 18:45

The issue is the postal address- so you have the London borough of Bexley but the postal address is Bexleyheath, Kent. So it is Kent, but also a London borough. Doesn't make sense. And Londoners would be VERY offended if you said you lived in London!

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 06/10/2019 18:45

Which technically they are (London borough of Havering), but all still have Essex in the postcode/address

areyoubeingserviced · 06/10/2019 18:45

I live in suburbs of Kent.
If I say I live in London, people disagree.
It’s absolutely nothing to do with snobbery on my part.. I have a Kent phone number and address

MakeItRain · 06/10/2019 18:46

I used to live in the South East and would always say I was on the border of Kent and London. To be honest it never felt right describing it as either!

Nonmotherof3 · 06/10/2019 18:49

I think New Malden addresses are New Malden, Surrey (or at least that was the county we put down when sending letters) but its in greater london. Very confusing.

AnxietyDream · 06/10/2019 18:50

And get told it's not real London.

'Real' London is anywhere with a London postcode, apparently. You definitely get told off for pretending to live in London if you are actually live in Surrey or Kent.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/10/2019 18:53

Not the same but I get annoyed that my ‘local news’ is London news and I live no where near!

Svalberg · 06/10/2019 18:55

Surrey County Council have their HQ in Kingston-upon-Thames, perhaps you could have a word with them!

FASDE1517 · 06/10/2019 18:55

Kingston and Richmond may be in Greater London but they don't even have London postcodes. As a PP says, you write the address with the county, not London.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/10/2019 18:58

I live in one of the Kent places mentioned and agree you can’t win. A London borough but my address is Kent.
So I live simultaneously in both.
OP- why shouldn’t I say I live in Kent if my address is Kent?
I tend to say southeast London though. I am 2 streets from SE2.

NiktheGreek · 06/10/2019 18:58

@MollyButton there is a Grammar School in Reigate which is in Surrey.

80sMum · 06/10/2019 18:59

Postal addresses in the UK do not need counties. The correct way to write an address is:
Number (or house name) + Street (if street has a name)
District (if applicable)
Postal Town
Post Code

Examples;
25 Any Old Road
Portsmouth
PO1 etc

The Old Cottage
Little Village
Petersfield
GU31 etc
