As in people in places such as Richmond, Kingston (insisting they live in Surrey) or places such as Bromley (insisting they are in Kent).

These places may used to have in a different county but have been part of greater London and a London Borough since 1965.

Is is snobbery? They usually drone only about postal towns which also no longer exist.

” If she lives in a London Borough then no matter what county her house may have been in prior to 1965 then she is a Londoner.”

I’m not disputing that, all those points have already been made several times on this thread.

Good lord.

My own view, as someone who spent years living in or near South West London would be that places like Richmond and Kingston etc are in Surrey not London, but I’m perfectly aware that technically I’m wrong and I couldn’t give a monkeys whether people who live in somewhere I consider to be Surrey call themselves Londoners.

Me, I’m actually from (and currently living in) Cambridgeshire, which is nowhere near London, however my family are all from places that have an E postcode.

Evilmorty · 08/10/2019 15:02

LBOCS2 mumsnet consensus also says that Enfield isn’t in Middlesex. But it isn’t in London either because only half of it has the right postcodes. Hmm

mymycherrypie someone should probably let Dave Peacock know his entire career was a lie 😂 “Give me a “Enfield definitely not Middlesex because that was abolished in 1965 but not quite London girl every time” doesn’t have the same ring, does it!

ColaFreezePop · 08/10/2019 15:26

@LBOCS2 People from Croydon are from Croydon. They are unique as everyone has heard of Croydon.

(Yeah I know it is the London Borough of Croydon, and they keep trying to become a City in their own right but have been turned down because they are part of Greater London.)

BossAssBitch · 08/10/2019 15:48

Well there is London (Shoreditch, Notting Hill, Chelsea and Mayfair, etc) and there is London (Newham, Dagenham, Barking and Havering. etc)

And there is Surrey (Guildford, Esher, Cobham, Virginia Water, etc, etc) and there is Surrey (Staines, Redhill, Leatherhead and Woking has lots of deprived areas)

Both have their salubrious parts, both have their shabby parts.

PontinPlace · 08/10/2019 16:36

Well there is London (Shoreditch, Notting Hill, Chelsea and Mayfair, etc) and there is London (Newham, Dagenham, Barking and Havering. etc)

All of those so called salubrious parts you mentioned have their shabby bits.

Sincerely, a slightly offended Newham born and bred!!!!!

RuffleCrow · 08/10/2019 16:43

My grandma was Shoreditch born. Lovely neighbourhood - stone's throw from the old workhouse - i expect her family told her horror stories about that. No wonder she couldn't wait to get out to leafy Leytonstone Essex and reinvent herself!!

PontinPlace · 08/10/2019 16:45

Shoreditch is still pretty dire IMO, in amongst the hipster bits.

SimonJT · 08/10/2019 17:25

@pontinplace I’ve lived in Shoreditch for just over ten years, I love it.

Woodlandwitch · 08/10/2019 17:52

Shoreditch is one of my favourite places to aimlessly wander in London.
Nothing dire about it in my opinion.

PontinPlace · 08/10/2019 17:57

I didn't say I didn't like it there, just that it has dire bits amongst the good bits.

StCharlotte · 08/10/2019 19:40

so people from Croydon are neither in Surrey or London?

Indeed. Croydon is Schrodinger's Borough.

bohemia14 · 08/10/2019 21:18

@BadgersPaws2 thank you. I live in the LONDON Borough of Bromley. I'm a Londoner.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 08/10/2019 21:27

The whole Enfield postcode thing is bollocks.

If you live in Enfield, anywhere in Enfield, then you live in a 'London Borough' and therefore live in London.

Parisa5 · 08/10/2019 21:33

The thing is, some place names just kind of roll off the tongue - Bromley Kent; Orpington Kent - so, like it or not, that’s what people instantly think when they hear those places mentioned. Or Romford Essex. Or Richmond, Surrey. Or Hayes Middlesex.

bruffin · 09/10/2019 05:52

PeterRouse
Its not Bollocks

I have an Enfield postcode. I do not live in London at all. I do not live in Enfield either.
I live in Hertfordshire. There is a sign saying you are entering The London Borough of Enfield and i am north of that and outside the M25. My dc school was further 7 miles north and that has an enfield postcode

Sallyseagull · 09/10/2019 07:15

bruffin

Agreed, I know areas like Hoddesdon fairly well, which is EN11, and that definitely isnt London.

smellybelly1 · 09/10/2019 07:26

Londoner born in the 80s here, I don't see Croydon or Bromley as London but that's probably because when I was younger people from those areas referred to themselves as from Surrey or Kent etc. I know someone who lives in Mitcham who tells everyone they live in Surrey.

Evilmorty · 09/10/2019 07:26

There is not question that hoddesdon isn’t Enfield. The point is that applying all the arbitrary rules on this thread leaves En1/2/3 in no mans land. The only real rules are GLC rules which mean that Enfield in its entirety is London.

If you have a non “London” post code after 1965, your postcode has become a London post code and anyone who says differently is clinging to the past.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 09/10/2019 07:28

Yes I know.

I mean people saying 'if you have an EN postcode you don't live in London'. I know that there are EN postcodes in Herts, but if someone lives in Enfield then, regardless of whether they have an EN or an N postcode, they live in London.

Evilmorty · 09/10/2019 07:38

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind 100%

smellybelly1 · 09/10/2019 07:39

What I find wedirder is meeting people who say they are from London eg Brixton or Clapham & then I say oh what school? etc it may be my one & then they say oh I moved to London in my 20s. If I moved to Manchester or Liverpool I wouldn't say I was from there

HappydaysArehere · 09/10/2019 07:50

I live near Bromley and my address is Kent. If I put London this would be a postal error.
Don’t know what you are talking about,

emilyzbx · 09/10/2019 07:56

@smellybelly1 hmmm I moved to London when I was 16 by myself, went college, I feel like my whole growth has been in London so I would never consider myself a manc still. Because I feel like I grew up in London (W3) (it's been over 10 years now)

DappledThings · 09/10/2019 08:02

@HappydaysArehere

I live near Bromley and my address is Kent

No isn't. Nobody has Kent in their addres. BROMLEY, in capitals, is correct.

smellybelly1 · 09/10/2019 08:06

@emilyzbx Does that make you from London though? If you move to France at 16 are you French? if I moved to Liverpool or Newcastle at 16 would I be a Scouser or a Geordie?
I ask because I know people who moved North for uni & stayed & they still say they don't feel 100% accepted. My parents are immigrants & moved to London in their early 20's, they don't class themselves as English.
