To think this M & S assistant was wrong?

I saw a jumper I liked but they didn’t have it in my size. Ordered it to collect next day. Got it home and tried it on..fit fine. So cut off labels . But when I took it off I noticed it had a darker bit ...over each nipple. Tried it back on and this time looked in the mirror...so noticeable!

So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material. I said yes but I’m uncomfortable with where it is and I wanted to exchange ( note not refund). She screwed her nose up and said okay “ but next time don’t take the tags off ok.” ! I was so taken aback, but now I regret not saying anything.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to take tags off and then notice a defect? I had all tags , bags and a receipt.

I think YABU and M&S have exceptional customer service which is why they let you exchange, when many places wouldn’t.

C0untDucku1a · 05/10/2019 21:06

Was it faulty?

Mephisto · 05/10/2019 21:07

YANBU but it is depressing that yet another piece of clothing will end up in landfill.

QueenofPain · 05/10/2019 21:07

It kinda is unreasonable to take the tags off, you had every opportunity to examine it for manufacturing defects before removing them.

If a fault had developed after the fact then yes, fair enough tags will have been removed.

Oh well, you’ll know for next time.

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 05/10/2019 21:09

She said okay and you got what you wanted so what's the issue?

Mephisto · 05/10/2019 21:09

That’s true actually, I will try a piece of clothing on a few times before I remove the tags. Removing the tags feels very final.

Floralnomad · 05/10/2019 21:10

I think what she said was entirely reasonable , Shops get lots of people who buy an item for a specific occasion , wear it and then find a ‘fault ‘ and return it , she probably thought you’d done the same .

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:10

I tried it on and it was fine so I took the tags off. When I went to put it away I noticed a dark spot over one nipple area , then saw another. I tried it on again and asked DH and he agreed it was noticeable. So I think that’s unacceptable? Agree it’s not faulty as such but I wouldn’t want to wear it

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 05/10/2019 21:10

I suppose it depends if it was the tags or the label. If it was the label in the back then YABU. If it was the price tag then YANBU.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:12

The issue is she was telling me off but I couldn’t see what I had done wrong. I only noticed the discoloured parts after I had taken the tags off

OP posts:
WonkoTheSane42 · 05/10/2019 21:12

Well, you’ve made it unsellable so it’s going to get thrown away. I’m amazed they let you have your money back tbh.

3luckystars · 05/10/2019 21:13

Is this the top?

Dont worry about taking it back, someone else bought it.

OrangeWoman · 05/10/2019 21:13

YABU Most shops wouldn’t have let you return it if the tags are off. I thought that was common knowledge. I usually keep the tags on and the receipt in a safe place until I’m ready to wear it.

WonkoTheSane42 · 05/10/2019 21:13

Oh right, hang on, when you are saying tags I am reading label, but perhaps that’s not what you mean.

Ornery · 05/10/2019 21:13

People take the tags off, wear the clothes for an event, and then make up a reason why stuff needs to be returned all the time. Just because your reason was ‘legitimate’ and theirs was ‘I wanted to wear it for a night out but not pay for it’ doesn’t mean she can tell the difference.
It won’t go in the landfill. As it wasn’t faulty the tags will just be gunned back on and it will be put back on the rack, so less hand-wringing on that front.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:13

Yes it was only the price tag I had taken off. She also acknowledged the discoloured parts said it was due to the fibres

Tough. Every store has clear policy - cut off the tags or wear it and it's yours. They were good to let you change it. You are being very unreasonable.

losingmymindiam · 05/10/2019 21:14

So she let you exchange it?

Mephisto · 05/10/2019 21:14

It is weird that you didn’t spot the dark spot over the nipples. But possible I guess.

Just think OP, how much stuff is returned to stores that they can’t re-sell. I don’t blame the assistant for being fed up. I would be depressed for the environment if I worked in retail.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:15

So you would keep a top that had dark patches on both nipple areas then?

OP posts:
Ribrabrob · 05/10/2019 21:15

What a complete non-issue.

Ridiclious · 05/10/2019 21:16

If it's unwearable by the OP then it's unsellable to anyone else anyway! YANBU

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:17

It doesn’t say in the returns policy that you have to keep tags on. By the way I returned it the same day as I only live ten minutes away.

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 05/10/2019 21:17

It's a defect.
Doesn't matter if you've taken the tags off. It will take them 30 seconds to put the tags back on.

TitianaTitsling · 05/10/2019 21:18

Ah, are you asking if she was wrong for accepting it and refunding?
