To think this M & S assistant was wrong?

I saw a jumper I liked but they didn’t have it in my size. Ordered it to collect next day. Got it home and tried it on..fit fine. So cut off labels . But when I took it off I noticed it had a darker bit ...over each nipple. Tried it back on and this time looked in the mirror...so noticeable!

So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material. I said yes but I’m uncomfortable with where it is and I wanted to exchange ( note not refund). She screwed her nose up and said okay “ but next time don’t take the tags off ok.” ! I was so taken aback, but now I regret not saying anything.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to take tags off and then notice a defect? I had all tags , bags and a receipt.

I think it was faulty ..because I don’t expect to buy a jumper with dark patches on it but my point is I’m not a quality control technician. Its a plain beige jumper that is sold in a folded over packet ( the type with cardboard in it) so I didn’t do a comprehensive comparison with the other jumpers ...nor could I because it was in a sealed bag as I’d ordered it online and collected it from store.

Who else has been on the m&s website to try and identify the jumper?..

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 21:50

the issue is the asst didn't think it was faulty and you did. She gave you a refund or whatever so you can't complain. If she had not offered you a refund you could have asked for a manager and for another opinion.

You are making a fuss because all it amounts to is you thought it was a fault and she thought it was the shading of the wool.

sammylady37 · 05/10/2019 21:51

It sounds like when you tried it on the first time (before removing the tags) you didn’t actually look in the mirror- is that right? If so, a) who does that and b) you’re at fault

SuzieSunshine · 05/10/2019 21:52

In that case, you didn't like the way it looked on you but you'd taken off the price tags, you then returned it and got a refund. Perfect ending!!

This really isn't a big deal. Maybe she was a bit of a jobsworth, but you got what you wanted, so just forget about it now.

YABU and you know you are YABU. You tried the garment on, decided it was acceptable and then cut the tags off. I think you should be grateful they gave you a refund and what the shop assistant said is true. Are you always this entitled?

moobar · 05/10/2019 21:58

Yanbu.

But second post @AllFourOfThem Hmmin your experience perhaps.

I would like to see it. I have two outstanding issues, no response via emails, no call back.

One wardrobes where the people refused to build them because they need an empty room to do it, empty not clear. January this year.

One re delivery issue where items ordered and one week later when due to collect were out of stock, still have money from day ordered which was taken. Have learnt from here they operate a system of not marking stick as allocated when they sell it and take the money but when they dispatch it.

So no, not exceptional service.

itsmecathycomehome · 05/10/2019 22:00

I would have cut the labels off after checking that it fit ok, and I would have returned it (without labels) for having two obvious dark patches on.

But I also would have been pleased that M&S were refunding when they didn't have to, and taken the 'telling off' as a fair cop really.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 22:01

Asking for an exchange is hardly being entitled

OP posts:
Surenuff · 05/10/2019 22:04

what is it you regret not saying to the assistant, after they had ok'd a refund and advised you about the tags for future ref? Have a go at her about her 'attitude'? Fuck that shit.

soannoyed12 · 05/10/2019 22:04

YABU. The assistant exchanges the item and tells you what you should do next time if your unhappy with an item. Hardly a telling off. Also thought everyone knows not to take labels off until you know your happy with the purchase!

SegregateMumBev · 05/10/2019 22:04

You tried it on - and presumably were happy with it BEFORE you took the tags off.

That's all the assistant was advising you - make sure you are completely happy with fit, colour everything, next time, before removing tags.

It was OK for you to ask for an exchange, also OK for the assistant to give you some useful advice.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 05/10/2019 22:06

If it was defective then the tags are irrelevant - the product was defective.

I once took a school cardigan back to M&S once because after it was worn once and had gone through the wash all the stitching came undone down one sleeve. The assistant seemed to think I was returning it under the store’s returns policy and tried to say I couldn’t return it because it had been worn and washed! She really could get that I was returning it under consumer rights Act as not of satisfactory quality so store returns policy was irrelevant. Was very grumpy about it.

Surenuff · 05/10/2019 22:07

Who the heck tries things on without looking in a mirror anyway??

RingtheBells · 05/10/2019 22:10

They are very grumpy in there if you take anything back with a fault and usually have a big inquest on it whereas other shops if you take back stuff if it shrinks etc they refund you

DappledThings · 05/10/2019 22:15

so most of you wouldn’t return an item you thought to be faulty if you noticed after you’d removed the tags? You’d just leave it?

No, I'd probably try to return it too but accept I might not be able to. Having had my refund I would be pretty pleased about the outcome and not whinging about the shop assistant who had done me a favour

Candymay · 05/10/2019 22:17

Could you perhaps have tried a different bra with it and repositioned your nipples slightly?

Cherrysoup · 05/10/2019 22:18

You’re supposed to leave the tags on until you’re happy with it. An online clothes website I use threads ribbon through one trouser leg and says don’t cut it off til you’re sure you’re keeping it. YABU.

DeathStare · 05/10/2019 22:19

I really don't get what your problem is.

You wanted an exchange; you got an exchange. She didn''t have to give you one, but she did anyway.

She didn't tell you off; she advised you next time not to take the tags off. She was right to advise you that - next time someone else might not be as nice.

But even if you didn't like her advice, she still didn't bawl you out or publicly humiliate you and YOU GOT WHAT YOU ASKED FOR without having to put up a fight.

What's the issue?
