To think this M & S assistant was wrong?

I saw a jumper I liked but they didn’t have it in my size. Ordered it to collect next day. Got it home and tried it on..fit fine. So cut off labels . But when I took it off I noticed it had a darker bit ...over each nipple. Tried it back on and this time looked in the mirror...so noticeable!

So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material. I said yes but I’m uncomfortable with where it is and I wanted to exchange ( note not refund). She screwed her nose up and said okay “ but next time don’t take the tags off ok.” ! I was so taken aback, but now I regret not saying anything.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to take tags off and then notice a defect? I had all tags , bags and a receipt.

"Not her place to tell you off."

Hardly a telling off. Just advice for next time.
If she said it with a bit of edge, it's because she sees dozens of people a day who have obviously removed the tags in order to wear the item before returning it. Who cares. OP wanted an exchange and got a quibble-free exchange. She got exactly what she wanted and asked for. Yet is still running them down on here.

"Assistant looked at me and asked if anything wrong with top, after I clearly stated I had just changed my mind."

Gosh it's almost like she didn't hear you or forgot that she'd asked you isn't it. They have always asked that question, to identify imperfect stock.

Who the hell would work in customer service nowadays. When two perfectly civil and reasonable conversations leave customers clutching their pearls.

RoomR0613 · 06/10/2019 09:22

I don't think it's nipple, it looks like a grease stain almost.

Elodie2019 · 06/10/2019 09:45

Anyone who thinks the Mark is a nipple, how do you explain the marks below (circled in red) ? More nipples?

MadamPompadoo · 06/10/2019 09:51

I think you both need a trip to Specsavers.

Grease stain? As if they'd use a shot with a stain on the website?

Lexplorer · 06/10/2019 10:07

How do some people reach adulthood without a nano-grain of resilience?

lifesbetteraftertea · 06/10/2019 10:13

OP I would just take the customer assistants advice in future, try the clothes on with tags and inspect carefully before you remove them, it’s common sense really. I worked in M&S for 6 years whilst at uni and it’s unbelievable what so many of their shoppers think they’re entitled to!

MrsGrindah · 06/10/2019 10:13

If that’s aimed at me I have plenty of resilience thank you. I asked a question on here, I’m not taking it to the Supreme Court.

Lexplorer · 06/10/2019 10:15

You can't have if a comment upset you so much you made a thread about it!

MrsGrindah · 06/10/2019 10:19

I’m not upset. Starting a thread takes no effort at all

She advised you to not take off the tags in future until you are certain you are keeping it. She still took the item back. She wasn't "wrong" she just gave you advice. It's up to you whether to heed it or not.

"Change of mind" isn't covered in your statutory rights.

RingtheBells · 06/10/2019 10:24

Change of mind" isn't covered in your statutory rights.

It is if you bought it online which OP did

RoomR0613 · 06/10/2019 10:27

I think you both need a trip to Specsavers.

Grease stain? As if they'd use a shot with a stain on the website?

Spectacularly misses the point that this is the same 'fault' that the OP describes on her top. No one is saying it actually is a stain just that the fabric seems to have darker patches that could look like a stain/grease/leaky boobs in a certain light.

Anywhere else on the top it probably wouldn't matter but when it occurs over the bust it's going to show up more.

If you can't see it consider that perhaps it's you that needs the trip to specsavers Grin

fromthefloorboardsup · 06/10/2019 10:31

I think you're being unreasonable. I wouldn't expect to be able to return or exchange anything I'd cut the tags off. I keep the tags on things for a while for this reason (until I'm ready to wear and have looked in the mirror a lot). You've said it's not faulty, your reason was essentially 'I don't like it'.

PrimalLass · 06/10/2019 10:56

You've said it's not faulty

She said it was faulty with dark marks on it.

AllFourOfThem · 06/10/2019 11:02

@PrimalLass the assistant said it was just the variation in the material which is not a fault.

MadamPompadoo · 06/10/2019 11:08

@MrsGrindah I am going to say this once more then leave it. The asst said it was a variation in the weave and you agreed.

If you have said no, it's a fault, that is different.

But you didn't.

She thought it was shading in the marl (which all knitwear can have though that jumper doesn't look marled).

At that point you ought to have made it clear it looked like a fault, not a variation in the tone of the 'wool'.

IMO the fact you agreed with her opinion put you on the back foot.

You should have insisted it was a fault and not seen until after you had removed the price tag.

Is this really so hard to get your head round?

It comes down not to her telling you to leave a label on but what the actual issue was ( fault or acceptable difference in weave.)

MrsGrindah · 06/10/2019 11:14

You really didn’t need to say it again.

OP posts:
NoSauce · 06/10/2019 11:20

What’s the actual issue?

You wanted an exchange, which you got but the assistant quite rightly asked you to leave on the tag in future as the item wasn’t faulty.

What is wrong with that???

C0untDucku1a · 06/10/2019 12:17

What’s the actual issue?

Im assuming someone who op considers beneath her, questioned her actions.

PrimalLass · 06/10/2019 12:22

@PrimalLass the assistant said it was just the variation in the material which is not a fault.

If the variation in the weave is only in that place across the chest then it's a fault.

TurquoiseDress · 06/10/2019 12:27

I only remove the tags when it's definitely something I want to keep!

Sometimes I have things at home for a week or so before I finally decide

I often order clothes online nowadays as I don't have the time or inclination to go shopping

Often I'll order a few sizes to check best fit

I think YABU a bit unreasonable in this situation

M&S agreed to what you wanted despite you already having cut the tags off

A lot of high street shops would have refused you anything with the tags cut off

Mephisto · 06/10/2019 12:41

@LaurieFairyCake

you're solely responsible for environmental disaster confusedhmm

Don’t be such a drama queen, all I said was that I would be depressed working in retail at the amount of stuff that goes in landfill. It was a general comment hardly accusing the OP of her personally being responsible for environmental disaster. Hmm

icannotremember · 06/10/2019 12:48

I think she was right tbh, but even if she wasn't is it worth getting bothered by it? You got what you wanted. A lot of shops wouldn't have agreed to it.

Isitnearlyweekend · 06/10/2019 12:57

@MerryInthechelseahotel I’m 50 and mine have repositioned themselves in a southerly direction 🤨

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 06/10/2019 13:20

It is if you bought it online which OP did

If it's bought online and returned with the tags on it is. Buy it online, take the tags off and then decide you want to change your mind, they might not be so obliging. Indeed it is mentioned in many terms and conditions of online clothes shops.
