To think this M & S assistant was wrong?

I saw a jumper I liked but they didn’t have it in my size. Ordered it to collect next day. Got it home and tried it on..fit fine. So cut off labels . But when I took it off I noticed it had a darker bit ...over each nipple. Tried it back on and this time looked in the mirror...so noticeable!

So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material. I said yes but I’m uncomfortable with where it is and I wanted to exchange ( note not refund). She screwed her nose up and said okay “ but next time don’t take the tags off ok.” ! I was so taken aback, but now I regret not saying anything.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to take tags off and then notice a defect? I had all tags , bags and a receipt.

Oh, the term snowflake. How original.

Drogosnextwife · 05/10/2019 22:27

YANBU. It was faulty, they have to take it back if its faulty even if the tags are off. They should take it back without the tags even if its not faulty, as long as you have the receipt or proof of purchase.

RingtheBells · 05/10/2019 22:29

I tried something on from Next the other day and the tag pinged off. Was I not meant to return it then. The same has happened in Marks

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 22:30

Have you considered that it was your communication skills that were lacking?
So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material. I said yes but I’m uncomfortable with where it is

so really, it's your fault for not being assertive that it was a fault (in your eyes.)

She said it was a variation and you agreed.

If you said very specifically that the top was faulty, the asst did not need to 'lecture you' about not removing price labels.

Branster · 05/10/2019 22:31

It is not un-salable, they can put a tag on it and your receipt will show you've barely had it in your possession.it was a defective item, who wants to walk around with a top highlighting their nipples? And it was a replacement not a refund so in their benefit.
She should have been more courteous to you OP, at a time when they really struggle to attract or keep customers (no customers = no job for said M&S employee) they should do their utmost to please you.

Seriously, you got an exchange. Stop complaining.

Makes me cringe every time I hear it

Je prefere BROflake. Grin

MrMeSeeks · 05/10/2019 22:47

You felt ‘told off’ Hmm
She was doing her job. It wasn't faulty, you just didn't like how it looked. Thats fine, next time look more carefully before removing the tags.
She was right, that can now not be sold.

Butchyrestingface · 05/10/2019 22:48

Asking for an exchange is hardly being entitled

Navel gazing about it on the internets because the rank and file didn’t tug the forelock hard enough is a bit, though.

RingtheBells · 05/10/2019 22:49

It can be sold without tags, lots of stuff in there has tags missing, it shouldn’t be sold though as it is faulty

Mydumboears · 05/10/2019 22:49

I actually returned an item to M&S today that I had cut the tag off, and the shop assistant didn’t care at all. So I think you just had a bad experience. Mine wasn’t even faulty; just didn’t fit. (I had tried it on, but I think I took the wrong one to the till, cut off the tag to wear it and then realised.)

memaymamo · 05/10/2019 23:07

I’m not being argumentative here just genuinely perplexed... so most of you wouldn’t return an item you thought to be faulty if you noticed after you’d removed the tags? You’d just leave it?

You said yourself you don't claim it was faulty. Therefore it's a matter of opinion and taste. Therefore, it's their goodwill that lets you exchange even though you removed the tags. Therefore just be grateful and don't remove tags before checking carefully next time.

YABU to be surprised at her comment.

EskewedBeef · 05/10/2019 23:07

She probably actually gets told off for taking back items that she shouldn't, such as those that have had tags removed. It isn't faulty as such, it's just unfortunate that the darker patches aligned with your nips. It would probably be fine on someone with a different bosom topography.

pastyballbag · 05/10/2019 23:15

You wanted an exchange
You got an exchange

snowball28 · 05/10/2019 23:19

Why can’t they just re-tag it? I used to work there as a late teen and they have tagging guns in the stock room. In fact every retail shop I’ve worked at has them. I don’t think you’re being unreasonable, you just so happened to notice a fault after you’re initial try on. She could’ve been more polite I feel.

MutedUser · 05/10/2019 23:19

Yabu you removed the tags you could have caused the stain when you wore it . I wouldn’t have refunded

PrimalLass · 05/10/2019 23:24

Taking the tags off does not mean you can't take things back. They tie seconds to reattach.

PrimalLass · 05/10/2019 23:24

Take

Mephisto · 05/10/2019 23:27

Don’t they have to reprint new tags? The original tags have the item number in it.

Nanny0gg · 05/10/2019 23:30

There's a little gun with plastic 'thread' that puts the swing tags back on. It's no big deal.

Bananashake · 05/10/2019 23:49

The people commenting on how at M&S there is an inquisition when you take faulty goods back. Having worked there and many other shops m&s have a particular problem with the buy wear unstich seams type returns so they are wary. It happens far more there than other shops I have worked in. People bring back suits say they haven't worn them, confetti in pocket etc happens all the time.
