To think this M & S assistant was wrong?

I saw a jumper I liked but they didn’t have it in my size. Ordered it to collect next day. Got it home and tried it on..fit fine. So cut off labels . But when I took it off I noticed it had a darker bit ...over each nipple. Tried it back on and this time looked in the mirror...so noticeable!

So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material. I said yes but I’m uncomfortable with where it is and I wanted to exchange ( note not refund). She screwed her nose up and said okay “ but next time don’t take the tags off ok.” ! I was so taken aback, but now I regret not saying anything.

Surely it’s not unreasonable to take tags off and then notice a defect? I had all tags , bags and a receipt.

YABU I am surprised she took it as a return as you'd taken the labels off.

Butchyrestingface · 05/10/2019 21:33

How can you wash an item with the tags on?

You're right. You can't. Although I probably could. Grin

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 21:34

I think the point OP is that 'unwearable' in this case is an opinion.

Just because the pattern seemed to be over the nipple area does not mean it was faulty or unwearable- just that you didnt' like the look.

I had a shirt like that recently where the flower part of the design looked dark over the nipple area so I asked for an exchange- it wasn't from M&S though and the asst did say it wasn't a fault but the way the material happened to be cut (unfortunately.)

So you were lucky- it doesn't sound like a faulty item just an embarrassing pattern you disliked.

thecabbageassasin · 05/10/2019 21:35

She might have just been having a bad day . You don’t sound like you’d win any prizes for customer of the year either. So maybe you could try to move on from this traumatic ordeal.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:35

I’m not being argumentative here just genuinely perplexed... so most of you wouldn’t return an item you thought to be faulty if you noticed after you’d removed the tags? You’d just leave it?

Isitnearlyweekend · 05/10/2019 21:36

I can’t believe you’ve even bothered to make a thread about this! Maybe you should have paid more attention when you tried it on. It was hardly a bollocking was it. You’re being over sensitive.

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 21:37

So went to return it and the assistant said it was just the variation in the material.

So was it a fault or a variation in the pattern? This is what is unclear.

Was this a plain colour jumper or a pattern which happened to be darker over the nipple area?

Link to the item on their site?

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:38

thecabbageassasin I wasn’t at all rude. Would never be like that.

OP posts:
Sagradafamiliar · 05/10/2019 21:38

No, i'd return it. Like you did. There's no problem here.

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 21:38

If it was a FAULT taking tags off should not stop you getting a refund.

If it was the PATTERN in an embarrassing place and you didn't like it, that i s not a fault and she was right- you should notice things like that before taking off price tags so they item can be re sold.

SuzieSunshine · 05/10/2019 21:40

You did say that you's cut the LABELS off so I also assumed that you'd cut off the labels attached to the jumper and not, as I now read it, that you cut off the Price tags and not the labels. Is that right?

Mephisto · 05/10/2019 21:40

Think there’s a whiff ‘how dare a lowly assistant tell me off’ here.

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 21:41

So what was it OP?

A fault in the material or a pattern/ shading in a potentially embarrassing area?

You are avoiding the question Smile

RingtheBells · 05/10/2019 21:41

A lot of stuff in M&S has tags missing anyway so probably best not to purchase those in future

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:41

It was a plain beige jumper. It was in a folded up package. I tried it on fir size and it was great. So I took the tags off. When I hung it up I noticed the marks. So put it on in front of the mirror and then realised both dark patches were on the nipple areas. I felt I couldn’t wear it and DH said it was noticeable. So I thought I would return it.

OP posts:
Winterflower84 · 05/10/2019 21:42

I am very impressed they exchanged it at all. You sound ungrateful.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:42

I’m not avoiding the question ...I am not qualified to say whether it was faulty or not. But I didn’t feel I could wear it.

OP posts:
RingtheBells · 05/10/2019 21:43

It sounds horrendous OP, very poor quality control

TigerDroveAgain · 05/10/2019 21:44

What’s the problem here? You didn’t like the item, you took it back and got your money back: and...

Your complaint is about the attitude of the poor staff member who did what you wanted? Have I got that right?

MadamPompadoo · 05/10/2019 21:44

I am not qualified to say whether it was faulty or not

Oh come on!
FGS!

If all the jumpers had the same fabric you could see clearly if it was a fault or if it was the pattern.

You said in your op it was faulty. Now you say you don't know.

Link to the M&S site so we can see.

MrsGrindah · 05/10/2019 21:44

I cut the price tags off not the sizing labels. There is no pattern on the jumper. I don’t know why it was dark in patches!

OP posts:
RingtheBells · 05/10/2019 21:47

No point in OP linking, the picture will be photoshopped to death.

Florrieboo · 05/10/2019 21:47

All this for a plain beige jumper?

Did you exchange it for another one?

Lolwhat · 05/10/2019 21:48

Yabu

Grumpyperson · 05/10/2019 21:48

The reason they want you to leave the tags on is so that they can resell it.

But if it's damaged, which is sounds like this arguably was, they can't resell it so why does it matter about the tags?

I am very impressed they exchanged it at all. You sound ungrateful

I'm always surprised how compliant MNers are about bad service and quality. Like all the posts that say "if it's in their terms" - yeah well it can be in their terms until the cows come home, but if it's an unfair term, it isn't enforceable.
