To think I should pay 1/3?

Travelling with my cousin and his wife to another cousin’s wedding in a different part of the country. They have one child, who’s also coming. I don’t have any.

We’re hiring a car because neither of us has a big enough one. The cost is £120. I assumed we’d pay £40 each for the three adults. Cousin has text saying ‘so that’s £60 each’, meaning £60 for me and £60 between him and his wife.

I don’t think this is right. AIBU? I know it’s only £20 but it happens all the time when some couples assume that they count as ‘one’.

Fly. It’s a cunt of a drive.

Or take your oh an two seater and face a peaceful toad trip with a stop over in lakes/Glasgow

Interestedwoman · 01/10/2019 20:08

I would say each adult should pay the same as individuals, so, 40 each.

BlockedandDeleted · 01/10/2019 20:08

little one their outgoings will be twice as much as you!

Why should OP pay for her cousin and his wife's choice to procreate?

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 20:08

Why don't you fly? It seems looney to me to drive all that way. You'll end up going NC with them due to the stress of it!

We always split things like this between each adult!

AskMeHow · 01/10/2019 20:09

Split between three. I don't get why anyone thinks 50:50 is fair Confused

Witchend · 01/10/2019 20:09

50/50 because it's instead of 2 cars.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 01/10/2019 20:10

If you weren't going with them, would they had to have hired a larger car to fit all their paraphernalia in, or are you all hiring a different car so that you can join them on the journey? If the former, then I'd say one third per adult, but if the latter, I can understand where they're coming from on the 50:50, although I'd still query it with them, myself - make the point there's one of you and two of them and you have only one salary and they have two. Or, alternatively, if you were going by another form of transport, each adult would have to pay for one ticket the price wouldn't be shared per family.
Oh, dear, sorry, OP, I've talked myself on to the fence here!

Ilove · 01/10/2019 20:10

Just say you’ll get yourself there...he will change his mind!!!

mantlepiece · 01/10/2019 20:10

Yes, and how will the cost of the petrol be split. Food and drinks during the journey?

BiggerThanBoo · 01/10/2019 20:10

It's a long drive too, do you really want to travel in a car with a young child instead of on your own and enjoy your own music? Lol.

Unknownanon · 01/10/2019 20:11

1/3 each. I always split per person, we all don't include the kids.

Span1elsRock · 01/10/2019 20:11

Save yourself the hassle and fly up! A car journey that long with a small child?? Not fun. You'd get a flight from Bristol for less than that.

HappyGoLuckyLuLu · 01/10/2019 20:11

Tricky! What about seeing if they'd go for a 60/40 split as a compromise? You could just comment that you're a bit strapped & that the trip will be expensive for you.

Have you discussed who will pay for petrol/diesel along the way? Might be worth making sure you're all on the same page before you go.

Dollymixture22 · 01/10/2019 20:12

They should have split it per adult.

But for me it’s not enough to comment on and create awkwardness.

bobstersmum · 01/10/2019 20:12

No couple would split something like this between themselves, they'd pay their half as a, erm, half!

j3mz · 01/10/2019 20:12

I agree 3 way split its only fair . Their being cheeky and I know because I've done this
My and my sister was ment to do a 3way split with brothers ex but we said I couldn't afford it as just had a baby so would have to be 50/50 My and my sister then split so she paid majority which was only fair tbh but less akward than saying well you should pay more beacuse........

pumkinspicetime · 01/10/2019 20:12

I would think 50/50 costs.
But I would seriously look into flying.

Thelistwizard · 01/10/2019 20:13

Just say you will take your own car on your own . I’m sure the full £120 plus full fuel costs will sharpen his decision. You have discussed how to split the fuel have you?

j3mz · 01/10/2019 20:14

Was ment to add but that was alot more then 20pound difference so I would just pay the 60 to save any friction

Thelistwizard · 01/10/2019 20:14

Sorry, xpost with happy re the fuel.

byefeliciabye · 01/10/2019 20:14

3 way split in my opinion, 50/50 is not fair.

Maneandfeathers · 01/10/2019 20:16

I would put the £60 in my own car and enjoy the drive in peace Wink

FunnysInLaJardin · 01/10/2019 20:16

Totally off topic, but how tiny are your cars that you don't have one to seat 4 people?! Grin
