Is anyone prepared to admit their DC does not attend - now or in the future - a Russell Group university

Don't be afraid. This is a safe space. MNHQ probably won't ban you. Though you may have to name change.
You can even fess up if your DC didn't go to uni.
Come on - I know you're out there.

My kids aren't even old enough to go. However, I would be very happy to jump up and down with pride if they went to a non-RG uni, so long as it was one that provided what they wanted.

Being a Russell Group university has bog all to do with the standard of education provided.

I quote wikipedia:
TheRussell Groupis a self-selected association of twenty-fourpublicresearch universitiesin the United Kingdom. The group is headquartered in London and was established in 1994 to represent its members' interests, principally togovernmentandparliament. It was incorporated in 2007. The group is sometimes perceived as representing the 'best' universities in the country, although this is disputed.

Nothing wrong with lobby groups, but being a member of the group doesn't make a uni magic. Conversely, not being in it doesn't make a uni rubbish, either.

MagHenTa · 02/10/2019 14:45

I didn't go to a Russell Group. I did go to the university that's been ranked third in the country for over a decade, and this year was ranked second over Oxford though Wink

cookiemon666 · 02/10/2019 14:50

Oldest daughter is at non rg uni, I couldnt care less. She has and is working very hard. Oldest boy will never go to uni, massively intelligent but has always struggled with school. He is at college doing brick laying. My younger two are still at school

Benes · 02/10/2019 14:59

The Russell Group - one of the greatest marketing campaigns in history.

Dazedandconfusedmostdays · 02/10/2019 15:04

I went to a R.G university Grin

lots of people dont and do go to russell group unis and end up being successful and some do and dont do quite what they would of hoped when they went ps there are unis just as good if not better than russell group but not in it ie Lancaster and bath

tommyshaircut · 02/10/2019 17:03

Op - it's St Andrews

pumkinspicetime · 02/10/2019 17:23

It is also worth noting that while the basic groupings of universities don't change a huge amount they aren't static either, Glasgow and St Andrews have risen quite a bit in the ranking tables since I first went to Uni for the first time, my first Uni isn't as highly ranked as it once was. No doubt there will be further changes in the next 25 years.

reginafelangee · 02/10/2019 17:30

Never heard of this before.

My own uni wasn't on this.

I don't care whether my kids go to an RG group uni - as long as they go to uni.

HoldMyLobster · 02/10/2019 19:27

I just looked at the list and realised I didn't go to an RG university, because I happened to get the A levels for a non-RG university that required higher grades.

One of the RGs was my backup and I rejected offers from 3 of them.

shortsaint · 02/10/2019 19:28

@Namechange170518 In that case I went there too 😉

TheOliphantintheRoom · 02/10/2019 19:45

Most of you are talking about yourselves- I asked about your DC!

OP posts:
HoldMyLobster · 02/10/2019 20:05

The irony that the RGs required lower grades than the non-RGs seemed relevant but I do apologise if not, OP.

Lolimax · 02/10/2019 20:16

Poly for me in the '80s. RG for DD, lovely old non RG for DS, and an ex Poly for me now doing my nursing
All happy with our choices.

Thenotes · 02/10/2019 20:19

Neither of mine went to Uni. One was earning FT at 18 and the other at 16. I have to try not to be too smug when friends are complaining about the cost of supporting their student children or to talk about my plans for the money we saved "for their education"Grin

Ds1 just started at non RG university. The location, course, campus was just the best fit for him. We went for 5 different uni visits earlier this year. On the day we visited this one, as I watched him chatting to current students and lecturer so engaged and with a bit of sparkle about him, I knew it was right.
He's been in touch a couple of times and he's happy and that's enough for me.

dottiedodah · 02/10/2019 20:32

My DS went to RG uni and did well there gaining a masters degree in science !.However my DD has not been to Uni at all .Many friends children didnt either and went to normal unis ,still got jobs !.My main thought was that RG unis did research primarily.

Adreamaday · 02/10/2019 21:04

My DD is applying for next year and if it is an RG does not seem to be a factor in her decision. Her 1st choice is St Andrews

I went to an ex-poly and turned down an RG (The 2 Manchester uni's). I had no idea that universities were even rated. I was the first to go to uni in my family. I didn't feel like I fitted at the RG, while the ex-poly were helpful and approachable.

CeriBerry · 05/10/2019 16:46

I dropped out of Cambridge and went to my local very bog standard uni whilst living at home instead. I’m sure I deserve a prize for this epic failure!

Catypillar · 05/10/2019 17:02

I just googled Russell group universities to see if I went to one. I didn't. Maybe it's a big deal in some industries but nobody really cares where you got a medical degree. One of the other consultants I work with went to Cambridge. He loved studying there but now we have the same job and I haven't been at any disadvantage compared to him as a result of studying at Aberdeen.

SusanneLinder · 05/10/2019 17:12

Didn't even know RG was a thing till I joined Mumsnet. Had to Google what it was, and then found that DD3 is at one. 😁. It's also a very old Uni.
DD's boyfriend has just finished an apprenticeship and is on way more money than she will get as a new graduate. So who really cares if you go to Uni anyway.
I thought RG was about research funding and not about how good they were, but don't claim to know much about it.

swingofthings · 05/10/2019 17:30

I too had to google to check if the Uni DD is at was one of them! It is and I am surprised. It didn't come across her mind (or mine or anyone else in the family) to look it up when deciding where to go, there were much more important factors to take into consideration.

AriadneCrete · 05/10/2019 17:34

@CountFosco I was about to say the same thing 😂. I went to what my dad called a “red brick uni” and I didn’t hear the end of it. Did my master’s at Cambridge, but it was the wrong subject, so he STILL looked down on it!
