Is anyone prepared to admit their DC does not attend - now or in the future - a Russell Group university

Don't be afraid. This is a safe space. MNHQ probably won't ban you. Though you may have to name change.
You can even fess up if your DC didn't go to uni.
Come on - I know you're out there.

Eldest is but based on the course and learning style to suit him. He looked at a mixture of others and ruled out other RGs.

Middle one is taking a gap year because she’s undecided about which path to take and wants to do some travelling.

Youngest has just started A levels but, given her current direction, is likely to end up at an RG. Again, because of course content and/or learning style, not just because.

museumum · 01/10/2019 19:00

St. Andrews. Who think they’re too good for the RG 😂
And art college.

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:03

Ohhh presumably these are the children of mners who don't do a very responsible professional job, where there are only three of them in the whole country in this position. To say what they do would be outing.
Or their dh does.
I of course am vair senior in government and my dcs will be going to oxbridge.
(theres an oxbridge in stockton... It has a primary school I think)

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:06

"I of course am vair senior in government"
Think priti patel
I'm not her or anything like that, just want you to think of her :o

Mrsfrumble · 01/10/2019 19:09

The children of MNers always seem to be “top of the class” or even “top of their year” too, don’t they? They don’t rank children at our state primary, as far as know, but maybe only the parents of the “top” children get told. Or they could be talking bollocks Hmm

MrsZola · 01/10/2019 19:11

Neither of mine went to uni - they're still alive and functioning! 😂

DustyMaiden · 01/10/2019 19:12

I didn’t know if they did or not until I checked Lancaster and Loughborough, so no.

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:13

Mrszola don't they represent their country in swimming or ice skating? Tiddly winks?

chemicalelephant · 01/10/2019 19:14

I work as a researcher at a university. I just had to look up whether it's Russell Group. Apparently it is. I don't get the obsession with it Confused

Trewser · 01/10/2019 19:19

Mine is at a non RG uni and loving it!!

PortiaCastis · 01/10/2019 19:20

Mine is at an RG and is thinking of giving up as she hates it

UsedtobeFeckless · 01/10/2019 19:22

I thought they ( RG ) were a sort of science funding pressure group? I don't get it either but there are no art schools in the hallowed fraternity so l'm probably just too dense to appreciate the finer details ...

altiara · 01/10/2019 19:22

I’ve just had to research Russell group as I’m old and this didn’t exist when I went to university, only it did! 1994! Well I guess they were just starting out. Such a shame I could’ve bragged about it if I’d known.

Can’t think too much about my DC going to university just yet, just hoping they pass GCSEs and can read/write. I might get kicked off mumsnet with such low goals!

pumkinspicetime · 01/10/2019 19:23

I have a RG degree but currently a trailing spouse and SAHP to school age dc 😂. So maybe not really doing what I should.
Poor dm was horrified when I went into social work stuff after graduation.

BanKittenHeels · 01/10/2019 19:26

It's really not something to be ashamed of. I'm not sure why you're insinuating it is.

Do you have to make using this so site so constantly unbearable?

DH and I went to a RG university, it was never, ever mentioned by the university nor anyone I encountered before or during my 5 years there.

My eldest is nearly 15 and looking likely to aim toward art at the moment. I might flog him in the street to save the reputation of the family though. Wink

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:28

You don't need to flog him. Just send him to a decent uni. It's the least you can do as a parent. Anything else is neglect

80sMum · 01/10/2019 19:30

Both of of my DCs went to Russell Group universities. The school had implied that any others were not "proper universities" and were therefore not worth applying to attend! This was in the late '90s.

DareDevil223 · 01/10/2019 19:31

Basically the Russell Group is just one of the UK university mission groups that happens to represent 24 mostly highly regarded research-intensive universities.

Universities that emphasise research don't necessarily provide the best teaching and learning experience or have the best student outcomes, looking at their TEF awards would be more helpful.

Here is a list of the Russell Group universities for information:

University of Birmingham
University of Bristol
University of Cambridge
Cardiff University
Durham University
University of Edinburgh
University of Exeter
University of Glasgow
Imperial College London
King's College London
University of Leeds
University of Liverpool
LSE (London School of Economics & Political Science)
University of Manchester
Newcastle University
University of Nottingham
University of Oxford
Queen Mary University of London
Queen's University Belfast
University of Sheffield
University of Southampton
UCL (University College London)
University of Warwick
University of York

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:31

Back then there was a big issue with the 'ex-polys'.
If it's not rg and it's not an ex poly, what is it?

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:31

York is debatable iirc

midnightmisssuki · 01/10/2019 19:33

Is this a thing now? Op I think your thread failed a bit - loads of people saying they went to RG unis - my husband did, I didn’t (but I’m not from here anyway)

MissConductUS · 01/10/2019 19:33

DS is not attending a RG uni. We wanted him a bit closer to home.

ALittleBitAlexis · 01/10/2019 19:34

Ooh, turns out I went to a Russell Group uni! I might start wearing a badge so everyone knows.

Of course, I only went there because I couldn't get onto the ex-poly course I wanted because my grades weren't good enough... but I'll leave that bit off the badge.

DramaAlpaca · 01/10/2019 19:35

I'm old & went to an RG university before it was an RG university. I'm quite sure that my perfectly respectable level grades wouldn't have got me in nowadays.

Two of my DC decided university wasn't for them & are making their way in life without degrees, doing perfectly well for themselves. The youngest is at university, but not an RG one.

user1497207191 · 01/10/2019 19:37

Out of the 5 on my son's UCAS application, 2 aren't RG universities but still have A*AA entry requirements and are rated very highly in all the review/ratings surveys. I think the days of RG being the only elite Unis are over as there are now some strong contenders outside such as Lancaster and StAndrews which are often in the top 10.
