Is anyone prepared to admit their DC does not attend - now or in the future - a Russell Group university

Don't be afraid. This is a safe space. MNHQ probably won't ban you. Though you may have to name change.
You can even fess up if your DC didn't go to uni.
Come on - I know you're out there.

I hope SPB is being ironic.
DS didn't even do A-levels. Joined the Army.

Now 19yo, financially independent last 2 yrs, planning how to buy a house. Army also arranged for him to learn to drive (my car was never at risk; these things matter).

Funny convo yesterday: "Oh,I wouldn't want my son to do that! I'd be so worried about him!" when I said DS had joined the army. The woman who said this... recently left a (?) 20 yr career as a police officer. Her husband is a fire-fighter. But ok, if you think being in the Army is too risky.

feellikeanalien · 01/10/2019 19:40

I've just had to Google which universities are part of the RG since I'm an old fart!! It appears that DB and DSis both went to one but I didn't!!

I suppose that explains a lotGrin.

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:40

Of course I am :D
I went to a RG University. Got a 3rd class degree by the skin of my teeth. But a few years before my mum had done a degree at an ex poly and I do rembwr that seeming liek a big deal, like it was lesser in some way. I think we've moved on.

ImogenTubbs · 01/10/2019 19:41

Mine didn't. But then she's only six. I'm sure she'll be at Cambridge is a couple of years.

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:41

My RG uni didn't teach me to speal

Jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 01/10/2019 19:51

Dd didn't go to a RG uni.

We have rewritten our wills to disinherit her, told her that it's all being left to the dog.
That'll learn her Grin

Trewser · 01/10/2019 19:52

The most mumsnet thing about this thread is all the posters, despite the OP, posting to say they went to a RG uni Grin

BunchMunch · 01/10/2019 19:53

I went to Bristol Uni, loved it! Didn't even know til recently that it was RG.
My degree though didn't really do much for me - I went from job to job and came to the conclusion I didn't like working - met my DH who never went to Uni and I eventually gave up work to be a SAHM.
DD boarded and I wasn't bothered whether she went to a RG Uni or not but she got her place at Imperial and is settling in well.

StealthPolarBear · 01/10/2019 19:58

Jellyshoeswithdiamonds where did the dog study?

nokidshere · 01/10/2019 19:59

Until Mumsnet I had no idea what RG unis were even. Now I've got two in Uni, one is at a RG and one isn't. They chose their own destinations based on what they wanted to do and the courses offered.

Kuponut · 01/10/2019 20:00

Did my first degree at a MN "approved" (wasn't RG when I went there but has joined since) uni and it led to 20 years of career mediocrity. Now doing a degree at an ex poly in a very subject related course and the quality of the department and teaching is superb. I actually interviewed for the same subject at a RG uni and really really didn't like the place and chose not to go there.

nokidshere · 01/10/2019 20:01

The most mumsnet thing about this thread is all the posters, despite the OP, posting to say they went to a RG uni

Neither me or DH went to uni at all, let alone an RG one

ssd · 01/10/2019 20:01

I'd never heard of RG unis till here it's definitely a middle class mummy boast.

pumkinspicetime · 01/10/2019 20:03

Oh damm, left out that ds is talking about art college and dd catering college.
So DH (also RG) and I will have to disown.
Cat is too lazy to study anywhere and dog too dim I fear.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 01/10/2019 20:03

One of mine didn’t and one did. The one that didn’t earns about 7k more than the one that did. He is three years older though.

They both had very different but equally fabulous experiences and neither would change a thing or go elsewhere if they had their time again. In fact the non RG uni was number one choice for DS and joint first choice for DD.

Abstractedobstructed · 01/10/2019 20:03

My son has an IQ at 96th percentile, not that it has done him any good. He is about to take English GCSE for the 4th time.
I will be amazed if he finishes his 2 remaining A levels. If he does finish them, I'll be amazed if he gets more than 2 Es. He won't be going to uni at 18 that is for sure.
He is autistic. I used to think he'd go to Oxbridge. Now I just want him to be ok and be able to find a job.

TheOliphantintheRoom · 01/10/2019 20:05

Op I think your thread failed a bit - loads of people saying they went to RG unis

I know! Mumsnetters can't help themselves Grin

I start a thread asking if their DC aren't going to a RG uni and it gets cluttered up with people who either went there themselves or whose kids are! They're obsessed Grin

OP posts:
BarbaraofSeville · 01/10/2019 20:07

You mean you don't even have one degree, let alone the 3 or 4 that most Mumsnetters seem to have nokids

PhilSwagielka · 01/10/2019 20:09

Not kids, but stepbrother recently graduated from Bournemouth. If you have kids who want to work in TV or film, it is a brilliant place to go.

tommyshaircut · 01/10/2019 20:12

I went to one, my son just started at Lancaster - not an RG. His A levels were much better than mine !

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 01/10/2019 20:13

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a Russel Group uni and I did my masters in one. Updating that bad boy on my cv! Grin

Furryfatface · 01/10/2019 20:37

How snobby. Russell groups only pick the easiest to teach.

KnitFastDieWarm · 01/10/2019 20:42

Am at Russell group uni doing PhD, was at Russell group uni for undergrad. Did masters with the open university (very much non Russell group.) Guess which I liked best, found most helpful, and had the best ethos?

Clue: snobbery will get you nowhere)

shinynewapple · 01/10/2019 20:51

@DareDevil223 thanks for the list - I had absolutely no clue! Neither DH or I went to uni - and DS is doing an apprenticeship.

We are all earning, solvent, happy!!

corythatwas · 01/10/2019 21:17

Neither of mine went/is going to uni. Dd is at drama school (not one of the big ones) and ds is working at KFC.
