I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

And the "educate yourself" comment is arrogant as fuck - you know nothing about me or what I know.

You totally missed the point of my post and wrote a misdirected and frankly sanctimonious essay which does nothing but demonstrate how vegans can be total fucking arse holes.

Reread my first post. I am a vegan, but open minded enough to understand that people have choices and I'm not going to ram my personal beliefs down anyone's throat.

MoonageDaydreamz · 02/10/2019 06:35

I am also pissed off that the veggie option is now a vegan option in restaurants.

I eat meat now but was a vegetarian for 10 years so I am happy to eat the non meat version quite a lot of the time. But I don't want to eat the vegan alternative - sorry but a coconut milk alternative to cream is disgusting, as is vegan cheese. So conversely I'm now more likely to eat the meat option than before.

Hopefully the pendulum will swing back and restaurants will cater for both vegetarians and vegans separately again.

QuimJongUn · 02/10/2019 06:39

Overheard in a pub at the weekend "how do you know someones a Vegan"? BECAUSE THEY TELL YOU! Made me snigger

Gosh I've never heard that one before! How original!

catalystc · 02/10/2019 06:42

I love how on these threads everyone who eats meat only eats organic, locally produced meat from the local farm. They never have a curry or a McDonald's or buy Asda £3 whole chicken.

vincettenoir · 02/10/2019 06:45

I think you feel threatened because it’s no longer just a handful of these mythical violent vegans and Greta Thunberg types that are adopting this change. Sexy people on insta are also turning to veganism, legitimising it. Even the UN recommended that people eat less meat earlier this summer and it doesn’t get any more establishment than that.

Well continue to feel threatened. Things are changing and there’s only one way they are going. However rest assured that it won’t happen overnight. You can console yourself with a mixed grill from Harvester for a few more years to come.

Underdone · 02/10/2019 06:46

@MmmBlowholes
Wow I am truly sorry if I upset you. That was not my intention. I was just pointing out that there are other victims involved in animal agriculture. Apologies again.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/10/2019 06:47

"Overheard in a pub at the weekend "how do you know someones a Vegan"? BECAUSE THEY TELL YOU! Made me snigger."

How many bloody times has this 'joke' appeared on this thread alone? Yet everyone posting it thinks it's they're the first person to say it. No wonder vegans gets fucked off with these so-called 'jokes' 🙄

Oblomov19 · 02/10/2019 06:53

I don't think it's just a trend. I think it'll get more the norm.
I eat quite a bit of meat. My close friend is vegetarian. 2 more are vegan. I doubt it will get less popular.

pictish · 02/10/2019 07:00

“good god i was here when this thread started.there is something crazed that happens when diet choices is brought into a discussion!”

It’s because people know they eat too much crap and processed meat products are a big part of that. They’re defensive about it so hearing a vegan state their values and principles is perceived as smug or sanctimonious. No...overall they’re just principled and disciplined enough to take a stand on the matter. Everyone has a flag to fly.

I eat meat, dairy, everything...but honestly, the ignorance and base humour on this thread just shows some people up as being narrow minded as hell.

Kiki275 · 02/10/2019 07:00

I like the increased ranges of vegan and vegetarian foods but dislike the branding of it. Why advertise something as what it isn't and instead celebrate it for what it is? I saw a recipe for vegan buffalo 'wings', they weren't remotely winglike, so why not promote them as what they actually were; a really delicious looking buffalo cauliflower pakora? x

Ziraphale · 02/10/2019 07:07

"I love how on these threads everyone who eats meat only eats organic, locally produced meat from the local farm. They never have a curry or a McDonald's or buy Asda £3 whole chicken."

Haha yes exactly.
But it's vegans that are hyporcrites who are somehow killing the planet with avocados. And everyone is a climate change expert and with way more expertise than the people who wrote the UN climate change report. And don't forget the concerns over plant based burger "processed food" (pea protein and beetroot gasp) when two thirds of the population are overweight or obese and are at increased risks of a myriad of health problems.

But of course that doesn't apply to this thread where everyone is an exception and somehow none of the ethical, environmental and health risks just don't apply to them.

bakesalesally · 02/10/2019 07:12

Haven't RTFT

It's just food. It's whatever people choose to eat. I can't understand why people get so upset about it.

I have never had a vegan lecture me. I think it's just a vicious stereotype that people like to keep going.

I also like to try new foods, and some vegan recipes are delicious! I will never stop being curious about new ways to prepare food.

Personally, I don't understand the need to use such strong language about these things, and I have other things to waste my mental energy on.

slipperywhensparticus · 02/10/2019 07:14

Personally this does effect me as they are making my foods vegan friendly by putting oats it it randomly yes it is wheat free and vegan but now I can eat it because I cant have oats ffs

purpleolive · 02/10/2019 07:18

If Bake Off goes vegan for a while episode again this year I'm going to scream.

And the gluten thing, so few people are actually coeliac but claim they're allergic to gluten, that's taking over too.

stucknoue · 02/10/2019 07:27

Know a few, what is annoying is that they have a huge list of cant eats, you buy this specially then they don't turn up, don't like it or worst still, make an exception and eat the cheesecake. The complaints the two vegans had about the recent buffet typifies it (they weren't talking to me but to each other) "how would they (the meat eaters) like it if they only got one sort of sandwich and flapjacks every time? And people sticking their fingers on the sandwiches then on the fruit means we can't touch it..." they went on to moan that there was only one "snack" samosas compared to cheese & onion rolls, sausage rolls and port pies, and that they only were offered sorbet not ice cream (ice cream by definition is dairy, clue in name, the company brought a vegan option sorbet)

Irking me still.

flipperdoda · 02/10/2019 07:27

Thankfully I've never had anyone lecture me. I reduce my meat intake where I can, but having been diagnosed coeliac (PP, we're one in one hundred - rare but not that rare!) last year I've also been informed I'm deficient in B12 and iron, and low in calcium. My dietary restrictions are difficult enough when eating out that I wouldn't personally choose to inflict more on myself - does that make me a feel a bit bad? Yeah. But I'll do what I can elsewhere and as has been repeated multiple times upthread I think any effort from anybody should be celebrated. We should all try.

On a side note, the influx of people choosing to go gluten free give us coeliacs more choice in supermarkets! Supply and demand. It does make eating out difficult though as not containing gluten and safe for coeliac isn't quite the same thing...

Jiggles101 · 02/10/2019 07:37

This thread is a prime example of how it's the meat eaters that get all triggered and preachy about what other people eat.

I'm not a vegan (working towards it!) but I know many and not one has ever said anything negative about other people's choices. Ever. I'm certainly not denying it's ever happened but I don't believe it's a regular occurrence.

Some people are twats regardless of dietary choices, it's not a causal relationship!

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 02/10/2019 07:59

@catalystc, Actually, I do eat McDonalds beef burgers (free range grass fed beef) but I don't eat any type of fast food chicken (intensively farmed).

Animal welfare is the key issue for me.

...and McDonalds milk is organic btw.

malificent7 · 02/10/2019 08:03

Ok so fruit and veg involve air miles but at least we don't have to shoot them before packing them into crates. Also veg dodnt priduce methane....which animals do.

Clayplease · 02/10/2019 08:07

I used to eat meat, dairy, eggs, anything going. Never occurred to me to think about it. Thought vegans were annoying. Never planned to be vegan.

One day came across a video on Facebook a schoolfriend shared (she grew up on a dairy farm) shocked me so much I began to look into what goes on behind the scenes.

I was HORRIFIED. Honestly the things they do routinely in animal product production you wouldn't want doing to your worst enemy.

Stopped eating animal products over a couple of months. It was a big learning curve! But to be honest I feel fantastic. IBS disappeared, as did sinusitis. Don't need to worry about my weight as I'm more thoughtful about food. Eat tonnes of veg and delicious meals. There are honestly loads of benefits (in my case at least).

I would just say I was anti vegan before but maybe don't knock it till you've tried it. I think more options has to be a good thing.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/10/2019 08:20

@Ziraphale you're assuming all vegans have chosen to be vegan to save the environment. I didn't so fail to see how that makes me a hypocrite.

But I do feel like I'm going round in circles here and I'm getting a bit bored repeating myself now.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 02/10/2019 09:12

Interesting to see so many vegetarians saying the same thing about an increasing lack of options when eating out. This had not occurred to me at all.

I'm an omnivore myself as I believe in eating local produce where possible. Obviously this can't be all the time as the UK cannot feed itself but I try to do my bit, which in my part of the world means lamb, beef, especially venison as deer have to be culled due to the damage they cause to the environment if their numbers aren't kept in check. Not to mention mackerel and crab and the occasional lobster. Yes, it sucks to be me.

Anyway, point is many of my favourite restaurant/cafe dishes are vegetarian, think spinach and ricotta cannelloni, or ravioli salsa rosa, or a goat's cheese salad, or if I'm not very hungry a simple omelette. I find it odd and a little depressing if such offerings are disappearing from menus.

IAmALazyArse · 02/10/2019 09:28

Interesting to see so many vegetarians saying the same thing about an increasing lack of options when eating out.

I found that interesting too and talked with DH about it last night. We both agreed that it's most likely really because of size of the menus and storing things restrictions. You can't have a GIANT menu (well you can but that often says a lot about the restaurant and I don't touch these) and storage options are limited too unless you want to run into massive waste problem with things going off and being more difficult to keep a proper control.
Meat dishes will not go, because they sell as majority of people eat it. So only other option is to adapt veggie dishes. I get why vegetarians are not pleased though... I had vegan cheese pizza and it was odd cheese....

I love vegetables, pulses, grains. I loathe nuts, including nut milk and cannot tolerate soya. I dislike Quorn and other meat substitutes so am fairly well stuffed. There are only so many chickpea/lentil based dishes I can eat without being sick of them. I'm not trying to be awkward but coconut and chili are another two things off the menu and I have tried all my life to find a curry that I enjoyed! I was a vegetarian for about 30 years but now my health means I eat meat. Sorry.
