I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

@beingchampion

"The 'militant' vegans that cause stress to both farm animals and other people should be bloody ashamed of their selfish little lives."

Grin SmileSmile
Causing stress by protesting for the animals or trying to save them as opposed to actually ordering the animals to be shot in the head/ slit in the throat? That makes no sense at all.

Also, in what way do you think their lives are 'selfish?' Be interested to know, struggling to make sense of it.

amoobaa · 01/10/2019 22:20

@SleepOhHowIMissYou ... if you’re talking about the idea that ‘militant suffragettes forced the public to think about votes for women, but their violent actions were used by opponents to justify withholding votes from women’ thus hindering progress... then, yet again, we’re blaming the victim.

Essentially the message is: ‘You’re reaction to being oppressed is causing other people to blame you. And if you don’t stop resisting oppression in a way they deem acceptable, then you will be oppressed for longer and that will be your fault.’

You know what that sounds like?

“Stop being vegan, it’s so annoying... hearing your point of view has made me more likely to eat cheese and say things like ‘mmmmm bacon’ and ‘plants have feelings’, because I don’t like you being vegan.”

And you know what that sounds like?

“Well maybe if you hadn’t worn that skirt he wouldn’t have sexually assaulted you.

Because clearly the problem is the way a victim reacts when they are being attacked, not the person who is doing the attaching. Heaven forbid the perpetrator is held to account.

AmourVert · 01/10/2019 22:23

Vegan, keto, paleo. Who gives a shit what anyone else eats. Boring bastards.

Clayplease · 01/10/2019 22:25

@sunshine11

"Most vegans are hypocrites, I’ve lost track of the number of vegans I know who happily wear wool and leather, eat honey or happily have vaccinations (which contain animal products) or use non vegan makeup.

I get that people want to make the effort but whilst you’re not doing it perfectly don’t lecture me on why I should do it."

Isn't it better to do something than nothing? Bit like being in a small boat next to a big boat which is sinking - if you couldn't fit all the people in your boat to save them, would you just say 'forget it, leave all of them.' ?

I think anyone reducing their intake of meat, dairy or eggs in any small way should be encouraged. It's good for health and the planet, surely?

@1Morewineplease

“Bloody hell *amooba
It was just a question about veganism!
Chill out! *”

Some of us are interested, inspired and curious. I was raised to contemplate others’ points of view, engage in debate and form opinions. You’re probably in the wrong place if all you can manage to type is ‘chill out’. Mumsnet is full of different opinions and perspectives. It’s one of the things I love about it.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 01/10/2019 22:30

No @amoobaa, I am pointing out that terrorism is never justified, not victim blaming.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 01/10/2019 22:34

No @amoobaa, I am pointing out that it is wrong to celebrate and justify terrorism.

amoobaa · 01/10/2019 22:38

@Clayplease

"Most vegans are hypocrites, I’ve lost track of the number of vegans I know who happily wear wool and leather, eat honey or happily have vaccinations (which contain animal products) or use non vegan makeup.”

God, you’re right.

And while we’re at it, let’s be done with hospitals and emergency ambulances.

Last time I checked, my 57 year old Dad suffocated to death in my arms due to a pulmonary embolism. So what’s the point in ambulances? If they can’t save everybody, why bother at all?

And what’s the point in having police? They can’t prevent every criminal act, so they’re bloody useless.

And why bother with safeguarding children? Something bad could happen to them anyway.

And why have any road traffic laws? It’s not like they prevent all road traffic accidents.

In fact, why bother at all? let’s just ridicule those who are trying.

Clayplease · 01/10/2019 22:47

@amoobaa
Yes exactly my point, I was quoting sunshine11's post and querying the sense behind it.

amoobaa · 01/10/2019 22:58

@SleepOhHowIMissYou .... I agree- terrorism is nothing to celebrate. I just think it’s more complex than you’re making out.

I don’t celebrate acts of violence or terror. Your argument hinges on our definition of terror. I’m not sure the suffragettes were terrorists.

Interesting though, when you think about how many so called terrorists stopped being such a nuisance when their oppressors stopped oppressing them.

In 2017 the FBI’s counterterrorism division labelled black activists as ‘Black Identity Extremists’ and branded them a threat to national security.

amoobaa · 01/10/2019 23:02

@Clayplease yes, I was so eager to agree with you that I got carried away and stole your point (and your quote)! Sorry Blush ... also thank you for restoring my sense of hope Smile

strivingforjustice · 01/10/2019 23:02

TitaniaQueenOfTheFairies .., this is the most hilarious post , Top use of words Wankery & Twattery ... applause for the eloquence 👏🏻 Yep it’s a new trend , 25 years ago I went organic , free range, no red meat just non farmed fish or organic chicken ... My reasons animal welfare & environment and if I couldn’t kill it myself I wouldn’t eat it... there were loads of vegans & vegetarians then too ... it was considered tree huggy & bollocky then ... You know what half this ‘plant based’ nice use of marketing buzzword is to cover for half chemical! We’ve clearly moved on from ‘Wholefood’ but chemically and artificially derived fake food can’t be called that ...You’re right, great post😘

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 01/10/2019 23:11

@amoobaa, of course terrorism stops when the terrorist gets what they want. That's using the same logic as "the thing I'm looking for is always in the last place I look"...why would you go on when you got what you came for?

amoobaa · 01/10/2019 23:22

@SleepOhHowIMissYou

“of course terrorism stops when the terrorist gets what they want. That's using the same logic as "the thing I'm looking for is always in the last place I look"...why would you go on when you got what you came for?”

You’ve lost me now.

I think we have different views on terrorism.

I don’t class black civil rights activists as terrorists.

I really hope you don’t either.

And if the suffragettes had to smash a few windows to be taken seriously, I’m grateful they had the courage to do so.

Good night.

JerryGiraffe · 01/10/2019 23:29

It's working out quite well for me to be honest. My DS has a cow's milk protein allergy which means there is sod all he can eat in a lot of cafes and restaurants but because there is a huge fuss about vegan options, it means he can eat because vegan food is obviously dairy free. He has been able to have pizza, ice cream, chocolate brownie - it's great!

MmmBlowholes · 01/10/2019 23:39

The world would generally be a much nicer place if we could accept and be tolerant of each other's decisions (provided they don't hurt anyone and aren't illegal)

You know, the basic primary school shit that you're all (hopefully) teaching your children.

Nothing like a "trend" to get people's backs up, eh? Let's hope the next one isn't something like "visiting your grandma every weekend" else half of mumsnet will be murdering their grandmothers to prove a point.

kateandme · 01/10/2019 23:42

good god i was here when this thread started.there is something crazed that happens when diet choices is brought into a discussion!

Lotsie · 01/10/2019 23:47

I'm not vegan but regularly eat the vegan options in a restaurant. I also recycle, try and get the bus wherever possible and do other more normalised environmentally friendly things - eating a vegan meal is just another part of that.

People having extremist views on any topic is annoying and overwhelming, be it knitting or veganism. At the end of the day it is simply a reflection on the person rather than the thing they are campaigning about.

I've always assumed people call themselves plant based not because they are twats, but because they don't want to unleash a tirade of abuse upon themselves by admitting they are vegan and instead choose to use a less provocative word.

LeahWarburton · 02/10/2019 00:40

I find it fascinating how many people are saying that vegan options are coming at the expense of vegetarian options. They are very different things, but the food industry these days seems to be lumping them together. While that may be fine for vegans, that is unfair to vegetarians.

Personally, I would eat more red meat than I do now, (I used to yet more) but it has become so expensive in New Zealand. As a result, I am on Iron tablets because of consistantly low iron levels. Red meat is still the best source of iron in your diet. Certain vegetables to provide iron, but not in the same amounts, and not as easily absorbed.

Personally, I don't care whether people choose to have meat as part of their diet, or if they are vegetarians, vegans, or whatever. But the recent protests in the meat sections of supermarkets (which are also happening here in New Zealand), is a disturbing trend. It is an attempt to impose their views on others; in a way many people find intimidating. And they do so without the supermarkets permission; leading to the protesters being trespassed. That sort of thing is what gives vegans a bad name - even though it is only a vocal minority responsible.

KnopeL · 02/10/2019 03:39

You sound old. And unreasonable.

MITCHELL33 · 02/10/2019 05:51

Overheard in a pub at the weekend "how do you know someones a Vegan"? BECAUSE THEY TELL YOU! Made me snigger.

Underdone · 02/10/2019 06:21

@MmmBlowholes
The world would generally be a much nicer place if we could accept and be tolerant of each other's decisions (provided they don't hurt anyone and aren't illegal)

But @MmmBlowholes the decision to eat meat DOES hurt people. Pity the people who have to work in the slaughterhouses; who live with the violence of it day in and day out. Research has shown that levels of domestic abuse and drug and alcohol addiction are higher than normal in areas surrounding a slaughterhouse. Because it's not normal or natural to do the job that they do. Some suffer from PTSD. Don't take my word for it. Educate yourself. And who are these people? They are generally the poorest and more frequently people of colour; basically the disadvantaged in life. Because who else would want to do that job?

So it's not just about animal rights it's a human rights issue as well. It may not be illegal, yet, but laws follow social movements. Otherwise slavery would still be legal, women would still be classed as chattel, and same sex marriages would not be allowed.

But hey, I'm sure I won't change your mind. What would it take to make you go vegan?

But sure, trying to live a life of less harm - what a preachy twat I am.

@amoobaa - agree with everything you've said but you put it so much better!

MmmBlowholes · 02/10/2019 06:23

Underdone, thanks for that (I'm a vegan...)

MmmBlowholes · 02/10/2019 06:24

And my point was on the side of vegans, but yes, you have proved yourself to be a preachy twat, the kind that gives the rest of us a bad name.

Ziraphale · 02/10/2019 06:28

@amoobaa you are the hero of this thread.
