I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

YANBU I'm sick of the preaching. I'm amazed that people are asking why meat eaters are complaining. Go check out social media and see the demonising of people who eat meat or wear leather. See the farmers being threatened. Read the snarky, rude, egotistical comments. Some of it is very cult like, people who were once vegans have reported being harassed after eating meat again.

There have always been vegans, always. I have met a fair few in my life, and they genuinely could be persuasive. But this new strain which is based on a so called attempt at 'saving the planet' is filled with a lot of people who seem to lack the ability to think critically as evidenced by the responses on this thread that if only the entire population of the world eat vegan, well then problem solved! No thought to how this will work on a worldwide scale, work for people who cannot tolerate a plant only diet, people who are sensitive to grains, work in terms of water poor countries like Australia for e.g. The impact on soil diversity, insect diversity, air miles, fertilizer use, mono crop impact on bees, poverty etc etc. And as i understand it no culture has ever been wholly vegan ever in the history of mankind. One would think for a reason.

However fair play to the modern food industry, because they are laughing.

You can imagine them in the boardroom.

"I think the future is fake meat"

"That's a ridiculous idea, it will never work, people aren't that stupid, it would be like selling wool to sheep, besides polls show an increase in whole foods trends"

"Oh just give it a few more years, the green debate is heating up, and we've successfully fooled everyone into avoiding eggs with are natural sources of B vits for breakfast and eating our sugar based cereals that we have to add artificial B12 and Vit A to for years"

"True, true"

The modern education system linked with a barrage of post modernist leftist propaganda has done it's work and now big corporations can sell us anything under a trendy guilt inducing/morally aggrandising slogan and we just lap it up.

Governments can also use it to get us to vote against our own interests.

Meanwhile some of the healthiest people in the world with the longest lived populations carry right on eating a meat based and fat rich diet.

“ I'm sick of the preaching”

When precisely were you last preached at and what form did the preaching take?

Mediterranean like Spain and Italy, aren't they?

tumbleisatwat · 01/10/2019 13:36

Oh and Japan- seafood central.

Unless you have an allergy, fish in one of the healthiest foods in the world.

BadLad · 01/10/2019 13:39

Japan eats more meat than fish

@BadLad

Really? That's not what I remember.

BadLad · 01/10/2019 13:53

See here

I can imagine it's true. I suspect there are far more tabehoudai yakiniku and shabu shabu restaurants than tabehoudai fish ones. There will be many that serve both.

We eat meat much more than we eat fish.

tumbleisatwat · 01/10/2019 13:54

Veganism isn't about health though- wouldn't cut out eggs, seafood, chicken or game if it was.

tumbleisatwat · 01/10/2019 13:55

You learn something everyday.

Be interesting to see if this change impacts Japan's legendary longevity and general health.

Some do claim it is. Not all obviously, but quite a significant number around me does. I was adviced number of times by people to go vegan that it will 1) help me lose weight and 2)make me healthier in general, boost my immune system, my skin will be awesome and I will have much more energy.

But in the interests of the question one encounter which stands out was just a few months ago, June it was hot and my illness flared up. I was in the uni canteen and because I had difficulty walking, sat down at the nearest table across to a total stranger who asked me nicely why I was struggling to walk - to which I replied I have Fibromyalgia and it was painful.

Admittedly she said nothing to that, except to say how sorry she was and seemed nice enough, until in the interest of conversation I asked if the vegan Cannelloni she was eating was nice - I had wavered over it as it looked appetizing - what followed was a half hour of her telling me while I tried to concentrate on eating my cheesy pie why she became vegan, and why veganism is better for the planet, and why eating vegan will be better for my Fibro - it would disappear apparently - and if I always eat meat and fish surely I can see it must be me who is doing something wrong as to why I am so ill, because my blood is 'too much acid' plus it is so cruel- to which I replied that my DS refuses to eat certain types of fish because of over-fishing which is true, and I thought would convince her that I'm not totally ignoramus regarding the issues. Her reply was 'so why you don't follow him?' she then related that she also found it challenging sharing university halls with two other non-vegans and was looking for a private flat to herself and did not want to share the fridges because she felt forced to wrap everything she stored in cling film (I have no idea how she thought the food in the canteen was stored before being cooked).

I humoured her, she was young and full of passion and seemed nice enough and I was eventually able to change the subject, but the joke 'How do you tell a vegan?' 'They will tell you?' Definitely holds true.

GreytExpectations · 01/10/2019 14:10

I have no issue with society becoming more vegan friendly. I think its great for places to offer such a variety of alternatives. Specially for people who have food allergies and intolerance.
In my experience, its always the meat eaters who are being preachy and you can certainly see that attitude on this thread. The vegans I know are actually very laid back and quiet about their preferences unless someone asks or it comes up in conversation, whereas the people who eat meat automatically complain about someone being vegan just because they don't like it.

FWIW, i'm not a vegetarian or a vegan but don't really see the point in getting annoyed by other peoples dietary choices/requirements.

You can't count this baity ass thread........ and your other example you kind of instigated or invited discussion atleast. I've found that in alot of cases people ask vegans/vegetarians about why they are etc and then accuse them of preaching when they answer the question

IAmALazyArse · 01/10/2019 14:14

@CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook 😮 hope you are feeling bit better.
People go crazy with various health claims sometimes. This was not a vegan but my dad was told few times that x diet will cure his diabetes type 2...
Some people deserve a smack

bunhead34 · 01/10/2019 14:22

Can I get a 'plants have feelings' 😂😂😂

Twillow · 01/10/2019 14:30

I know several vegans and none of them have attempted to push it down my throat, so to speak. Haha. I'm not one but we drink oat milk having tried non-dairy for eczema and much prefer it to dairy now. Isn't choice a good thing? I'm quite astonished by this anti-vegan tirade -who is veganism harming? What is actually wrong with having an opinion and planetary/animal welfare principles?

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2019 14:37

In My Glorious Reign, anybody who talks about curing anything with alternative therapies will be imprisoned for life. Whether it’s veganism or turmeric.

Wavyheaded · 01/10/2019 14:38

I'm a meat eater who loves vegans! As a food allergy sufferer (eggs), the famed vegan assertiveness has made my life a lot easier when dining out. (Veggie wasn't an always an option as they often contain egg eg pasta.)

Now people who pretend to have allergies however, I'd like to punch in the face...

AryaStarkWolf · 01/10/2019 14:39

I'm a meat eater who loves vegans!

That sounds a bit cannibalistic tbh Wink

HugsAreMyDrugs · 01/10/2019 14:41

Dried pasta is vegan.

VapeVamp12 · 01/10/2019 14:41

I only know one vegan. She lives on chips. Oh and fake chicken nuggets.

SmoothLawAbider · 01/10/2019 14:43

I don't have an issue with meat-eaters/omnivores, but I do have an issue with them ramming it down my throat all the time, preaching and acting holier than thou. I've lost count of the times they tell me how amazing bacon is, how I'm missing out on essential amino acids, starting threads on forums about how horrible vegans are, etc.

malificent7 · 01/10/2019 14:43

Yabu...im not vegan but know ot's a great choice for health and the planet...it's kinder and healthier. I am slowly going tgat way and think it's great there is so much choice. You can still eat animal products you know...they havn't been outlawed.
