I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

- don't forget, don't tell anyone

And at the same time, make sure any host knows in detail and offer to bring your own food (thereby simultaneously telling them and insulting the host).

We nearly made it through 7 days without a vegan bashing thread.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/10/2019 11:30

I eat out a lot and I've yet to go anywhere that has no vegetarian options, only vegan ones. Me, I'm just pleased to even have one option I can eat.

Downunderduchess · 01/10/2019 11:33

I don't like meat eaters who refuse to see the truth about what they are eating. I think the reason they get
so angry at vegans, is they know they (the vegans) are right. Seriously, supporting industries that breed animals to be slaughtered & sold as food... how arrogant to think that's ok. The animals suffer, why? So someone can eat a fucking burger??

Goatrider · 01/10/2019 11:33

sorry, IMO marg is horrible!

And after butter was demonised, it is now widely agreed that margarine is much worse for you.

The whole vegan cake thing irritates me (probably irrationally) as they seem to be protrayed as somehow healthier than non-vegan. Same with gluten-free.

AryaStarkWolf · 01/10/2019 11:37

1) Are vegans not allowed to eat cake?

No just carrots and lettuce I think otherwise they're not real or something, I don't know........

Loyaultemelie · 01/10/2019 11:38

I'm delighted that veganism has taken off for very selfish reasons. I became seriously ill a few years ago culminating in a hospital stay and it transpired that's body had become horrendously allergic to meat, fish, poultry and molluscs. I became vegetarian (obviously no choice) and embraced it happily but since more and more things are impossible for me to tolerate. I can't have cows or goats milk or butter now but can tolerate a couple of cheeses (no I don't know why either) and eggs. However as nothing has identified why this is happening it's looking increasingly likely that soon I will be completely vegan. I am so relieved to see many more restaurants embracing it as until recently the offerings were dire. I do know many vegetarians and a few vegans none of whom are preachy or show off although from fb etc there's a few

Kam610 · 01/10/2019 11:47

I have absolutely nothing against people being vegetarian or vegan.. but STOP shoving it down other people's throats!! Let people make their own choices. If anything, you are just being laughed at. Your words will not change people's opinions on what they eat. Leave people alone!!

I actually read a very very interesting article in last week's farmers weekly that I suggest all vegans go and read... a lot of the food you eat is actually not animal friendly at all, when you think of the bees and insects that have died in the process of growing your food. Or do insects not count as living beings??? Also the rabbits, deer, crows etc that have been shot to protect farmers crops...

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2019 11:52

“I have absolutely nothing against people being vegetarian or vegan.. but STOP shoving it down other people's throats!! ”
They don’t. You’ve just bought in to the ridiculous stereotype.

thisnamechanger · 01/10/2019 11:54

I don't really get the "animals die in vegetables production too so ner ner ner vegans" thing. Surely animals also die in the production of crops that are grown to feed animals too. So you could argue at least if you eat only plants it's theoretical less death per plate because the livestock aren't being slaughtered?

tisonlymeagain · 01/10/2019 11:58

@BertrandRussell it might not be "shoved down everyone's throats" but it does come back to that saying "how can you tell if someone's a vegan"..."don't worry, they'll tell you"

I know which of my friends are vegans purely because they talk about it constantly...vegan food, cooking, events etc etc on Facebook and the likes.

I don't feel the need to share with everyone that I'm a meat eater so why they need to tell me about their dietary preferences I will never know.

Nobody else needs to know that tote a vegan unless they are catering for you. It's an odd thing to want to share.

catalystc · 01/10/2019 11:58

Of course that is true thisnnamechanger. The argument about deforestation to grow crops makes me laugh too as most of the crops are to feed the animals which will be eaten.

I don't know any vegans who go on about being vegan, I only know 3 but I might know more that haven't told me. I do have a meat eating colleague who always likes to tell me about his foie gras or bacon sarnies then looks around the office to see who's laughing at his oh so funny joke.

noodlenosefraggle · 01/10/2019 11:59

downunderduchess I dont think people are refusing to see the truth. People who eat meat and dairy know farm animals die for food and you would have to be living under a rock if you are unaware of slaughterhouses and chicken farms. You'd have to be pretty idiotic not to know that chicken in food is an actual chicken. For one reason or another, and Im including myself in this, they don't really care enough to give up meat and dairy. Those animals would go extinct if they weren't bred for food. I appreciate many vegans think that is a price worth paying, but I doubt people will stop eating meat altogether in my lifetime. I think its great that meat consumption is going down, as maybe lower demand will mean better treatment, and surely any reduction should be welcomed. Standing at supermarket meat counters and harassing people in Pizza Express is only going to make people eat more meat if they are treated as being so stupid that they needed to be enlightened over the fact that their pork chop used to be a pig by vegans.

catalystc · 01/10/2019 12:03

Those animals would go extinct if they weren't bred for food.

🤣🤣😂😂🤣 they have such lovely lives in the cages, having they're babies taken from them, having tubes stuffed down their throats and being overfed til their organs can't cope, I bet they wished they could do it all over again!

Yes ok maybe less animals may have died for growing crops than being killed for meat... but where do vegans draw the line at which animals/living beings it's ok to kill for food?? I thought that the whole point of being "vegan" was that you ate only food that no living being has had to sacrifice their life for... so it's ok for bugs, bees, rabbits, deer, crows etc die but not cows, pigs, chickens. Yes I know I know that these animals are bred purely for meat consumption, but animals die regardless in the food chain... It's nature. It has happened for as long as living things have been on earth. Call me ignorant all you want. I will always be a meat eater. I live on a farm and know that our animals are treated with nothing but care and love and have the best life while they are with us.

ladybee28 · 01/10/2019 12:22

Sounds like most people don't have a problem with vegans at all - they have a problem with feeling like they're being told what to do.

And because they can't tell the difference, they throw a wobbly at Quorn burgers instead...

IAmALazyArse · 01/10/2019 12:24

And because they can't tell the difference, they throw a wobbly at Quorn burgers instead...

Many can tell the difference few hours after eating. I am still glad I cooked quarn on DH's day off. Violent vomiting is not something you want to do at work when you work in food industry...

AryaStarkWolf · 01/10/2019 12:28

They don’t. You’ve just bought in to the ridiculous stereotype

No it's offensive for vegans/vegetarians to have more choices on menus don't you know

C8H10N4O2 · 01/10/2019 12:31

I don't feel the need to share with everyone that I'm a meat eater so why they need to tell me about their dietary preferences I will never know

If that is the case, it probably says more about your friendship group.

However do you never talk about food? You never say "I found a great recipe site" or "I had a great steak at the restaurant in the high street"?

Most people do this unless they have absolutely no interest in food at all.

Gothichouse40 · 01/10/2019 12:32

I don't have an issue with Vegans or Vegetarians. What I do have an issue with is how fanatical some of them are. I welcome anyone to their opinion, but please do not ram it down my throat. I do not try to ram my opinions down your throat or judge you.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 01/10/2019 12:32

I thought that the whole point of being "vegan" was that you ate only food that no living being has had to sacrifice their life for

No.

HTH.

tisonlymeagain · 01/10/2019 12:33

True @joyfullittlehippo there may be others I don't know about. But still don't understand why some people think it's something they need to go on about all the time.

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2019 12:34

“but please do not ram it down my throat.”

When, exactly, does this throat ramming happen?

tisonlymeagain · 01/10/2019 12:36

Yes @C8H10N4O2 I talk about food but I don't go out of my way to prefix things I say about the fact that I eat meat. I would say "I've found a great restaurant/a great recipe I want to share'. I wouldn't necessarily say "a great Vegan recipe/a great recipe for meat eaters" As it is, I don't all the time, I'll quite often pick a veggie or vegan meal when eating out because I fancy it.
