I’m so fed up with all this vegan wankery

To all you actual vegans, amazing, I wish you a long and happy life.

I am just so fed up with veganism taking over the world, when I have yet to come across an actual one. *edited to say that some places in the world don’t have a choice

Restaurants falling over themselves with vegan menus offering fake meat and plastic cheese.

Veganuary - people just going to the supermarket and buying fake meat, rather than actually trying to eat differently.

People eating ‘vegan food’. Just eat an apple, or a carrot with houmous or any other naturally occurring food that an animal hasn’t produced. It’s not hard.

And I can’t even begin with all the plant based twattery. Many people have been quietly eating less or no meat, fish, eggs & dairy for many years and have had no need to pontificate about it.

I know I am probably being unreasonable but I just need to say it.

But the 'rest of the world' who don't eat dairy are mainly 3rd world countries

Japan isn't.

feistymumma · 01/10/2019 09:45

YADNBU it is so tiresome

catalystc · 01/10/2019 09:47

Oh and those eating loads of dairy and meat will die before they get to osteoporosis too if you want to take that argument Jingling. Obesity related diseases are taking over everything else. Don't meet many fat vegans.

shearwater · 01/10/2019 09:51

True, but to play devil's advocate, a lot of people with orthorexia are drawn to veganism.

soggypizza · 01/10/2019 09:55

I think sugar is the real killer and vegan or meat eater - we can all indulge! I have met a few vegans who eat pitifully poor diets and without a doubt there are millions of meat eaters in this country eating a poor diet - we all know what that looks like. It’s not what this thread is about though - it’s about people not liking what other's eat for whatever reason - often a stupid one.

IAmALazyArse · 01/10/2019 09:55

Can I just ask where vegans get vit D? Afaik it's non vegan foods which are good sources. Not taking a dig. Genuinely curious (need plenty of it in my diet)

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/10/2019 10:01

Ok I'll say it again for the hard of thinking. I'm vegan because I want to minimise the amount of animals that die for my diet. I feel that if I couldn't physically slaughter an animal myself then I'm a hypocrite to eat it. That's just my philosophy and not the same for all vegans. The environment isn't the driving force behind my veganism.

Yes I'm well aware that animals are killed as a result of agriculture but this goes for all food production, whether it's crops for human consumption or crops to feed cattle etc, nothing is going to change that. I'm doing my bit to reduce the amount of animals that die so I can eat.

I agree with the PP who said some of you don't want to be convinced. Why does it matter to you if others are quietly getting on with being vegan? Why do you feel the need to pick holes in their way of life?

shearwater · 01/10/2019 10:02

A lot of Vitamin D comes from sunlight (I'm not vegan but try to eat mostly plant-based food).

Iron is the one I struggle with, I've never eaten much red meat and you can only get so much, and a different type from veg and pulses. I take a supplement. And I don't really drink orange juice (which helps absorption) unless I remember to.

Also fibre - ok sometimes I'm eating my own bodyweight in pulses and beans, so then I'm fine, but I don't eat much in the way of bread or cereals, as my gut doesn't get on with it fantastically well.

pooboobsleeprepeat · 01/10/2019 10:02

Vitamin d comes from sunlight...

HugsAreMyDrugs · 01/10/2019 10:08

Uh, vegans get their vitamin D from the same place non vegans do...from sunlight! Of course we don't see much of that in the UK hence why so many people here are defeceint in vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency was a big problem for me back in my pre-vegan days and my GP told me that everyone in the UK should be taking a vitamin D supplement, at least in the winter.

IAmALazyArse · 01/10/2019 10:09

Sure. Sunlight is so easy to come by now...
I have deficiency so I had to adapt a diet to it a bit like more butter, certain fish and eggs. I was just curious which veg I could add to the list since I loath mushrooms.

Yabbers · 01/10/2019 10:10

Meat eaters get so offended by this and don't really see why! Is it a guilt thing?

No, but in saying that you've answered why you find meat eaters being offended.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 01/10/2019 10:11

It's also worth pointing out that we need vitamin D to absorb calcium. And given how concerned about our bones all the non vegans on these threads always seem to be, I would have thought they'd be more keen than anyone else to stock up on those vitamin D supplements.

ExecutiveFiat · 01/10/2019 10:12

Funny how defensive meat eaters are about vegans. 😗
I’m not vegan, but don’t eat much meat at all these days. I absolutely love the choice in supermarkets and eating out options in restaurants. I’ve made a few permanent swaps in my diet.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 01/10/2019 10:12

Pretty sure I said we don't get much sunlight in the UK, hence why it's recommended for everyone to supplement...

AryaStarkWolf · 01/10/2019 10:14

Oddly enough every thread I've seen about vegans on this site is people complaining about how awful or "wanky" they are, not seen a single one from a vegan saying how awful meat eaters are, how strange

HugsAreMyDrugs · 01/10/2019 10:15

I'm pretty sure dairy only has vitamin D if it's been fortified...

Fish contains vitamin D but it's still not enough and you're very likely still going to need to supplement.

Yabbers · 01/10/2019 10:16

vegan choices and raised awareness of the damage livestock farming does to the environment.

The explosion in vegan options has not raised awareness. Greggs didn't do a massive campaign about how terrible the rest of their products are. McDonalds haven't suggested meat is bad.

They are cashing in on a fad. Just as all the Gluten Free suppliers are. This does help people who genuinely need or want this kind of diet - the ranges available for Coeliac has moved on from the days of bread on prescription.

But don't kid yourself that people are more educated because of it.

soggypizza · 01/10/2019 10:18

Food is generally not a good source of Vit D - and in the UK you'd be wise to supplement given the lack of sunshine - choose an oil based supplement it's easier for your body to absorb it.

CAG12 · 01/10/2019 10:19

I think our 'traditional' diet in the UK is terrible and contributes to the ill health of those that are roughly around 50 onwards.

The fact that people are thinking more about what they eat is great.

Im a meat eater, but will eat vegan meals every now and again because they taste nice. I love that theres vegan cafes popping up - the one near me does THE BEST coffee ive ever tasted.

I think its just a culture shift, and its for the better tbh.

Teddybear45 · 01/10/2019 10:21

@ catalystc - sudden death syndrome amongst those who follow a mostly vegan diet in the region of India I am from (dairy became expensive so people due to global warming / desertification). It was common to see UK residents from my background my dad’s age drop dead suddenly in their thirties-fifties when their dairy eating parents managed to live into their eighties. This is because a mostly vegan diet can damage the heart muscle from childhood because it needs more salt, fat and sugar and processing to make it tasty.

Now people are eating eggs, fish and meat too sudden death has signficantly reduced in my community - not just in the Uk but the Uk too.

Teddybear45 · 01/10/2019 10:22

*Not just the UK but India too

Boshmama · 01/10/2019 10:22

Ah. Meat eaters get SO triggered by vegans. It's brilliant. Keep shouting about how awful vegans are and you don't need to think about the millions of animals condemned to horrific conditions and then murdered to suit your taste buds.

Power to the vegans! Posts like this show that we're getting there.

IAmALazyArse · 01/10/2019 10:24

@soggypizza I managed to lower the need for supplement now. Still have to take it though (as majority of people I guess) and I pop it with a cod liver oil tablet since vit d isn't water soluble. Shame veggies are not good source (except mushrooms apparently 😷). I was hoping for some tips on which ones to add more. I like veg. But yeah. Vit D is a hard bastard to get

catalystc · 01/10/2019 10:25

Sudden death syndrome caused by not eating dairy and meat. I don't think there will be any evidence on that one sorry, unless you care to share it?
