General Election tomorrow question

243 replies

bridgetreilly · 26/09/2019 19:32

So, I did the MN survey and was a bit stumped by the question about who I would vote for if there was an election tomorrow. Like, at the moment, it's hard to remember whether we've still got a government from one day to the next. I know who I normally vote for but right now? Who knows! I'm not sure the results from that question will be all that representative of Mumsnetters normal political preferences.

crispysausagerolls if you feel that way you can move there. It won't see the dramatic movement you describe, it's miles away, has a racist president, poor employment law, pitiful maternity eif sftbhoe lowanc. Ok EY won't just take you cos you fancy it. You need a job and wages are lower there. But go for it. Just don't expect the vast numbers you claim follow you there.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 27/09/2019 08:39

@KidLorneRoll, you didn't exactly make that clear.

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 08:40

@crispysausagerolls

I disagree with you. We are polar opposites, we will never agree. I know who I will be voting for, you know who you will be voting for,.
You lost me when you said people working in finance. If you'd have said a highly skilled surgeon you might have won me over.
It's also not about getting one over on the 'rich twats' as you called them. Most people have worked very hard to get where they are as paying a little more in taxes isn't going to change their wealth dramatically.

crispysausagerolls · 27/09/2019 08:40

Sunshine93

I would rather move to the EU but recent events make that rather unlikely 😬😫🤷🏻‍♀️

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 08:42

Every time there is an election, the wealthy and working-class Tory Celebs like that pleb Jim Davidson crap that pants about have to pay more taxes. Like they will suddenly become poor. Makes me sick.

crispysausagerolls · 27/09/2019 08:42

If you'd have said a highly skilled surgeon you might have won me over

That was actually my first thought! But I don’t know enough about their incomes to have confidentially used them as an example!

Again - a 20% tax increase isn’t a little more tax! But I agree with you - to disagree, as you say! I just wanted to honestly answer the questions at the front of the thread about my voting. Of course it’s for selfish reasons - but that’s what voting is usually about (unless I am just an arsehole).

Chocolatelover45 · 27/09/2019 08:44

Why would people work 100 hour weeks doing exceptionally complicated work in finance (for example), holding the economy together etc if they are not allowed to take home 2/3 of the money they are making? They won’t. There will be no motivation to succeed, work long hours or acquire specialist skills if you are paid the same who does a more vague 9-5 office job.

For someone who works in finance you ought to understand how tax brackets work. You will only be taxed 67% on the amount you earn above a threshold, not on the whole lot. You will still take home several times more than a standard office job.

As for holding the economy together... I think this may be delusional. Why is that more important for our society than any other job? And no one should be pressurised to work more than 48 hours a week - enjoy some time with family and friends (or on mumsnet Smile)

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 27/09/2019 08:46

As for any poster who thinks JC is not an anti-Semite and that all the stuff about Labour anti-Semitism is just 'smears', go and take a look at the Jewish press. Easily available online. See what Britain's Jews think about it. Or are they incapable of identify it, despite all the centuries of practice?

It's perfectly possible to criticise Israel without being an antisemitic. But JC has gone well beyond that. Remember the mural incident? If you don't, look it up.

Shmithecat2 · 27/09/2019 08:47

Conservative

Saucery · 27/09/2019 08:47

Still Conservative despite the events of the past week. If Labour got in we’d be suffering through Brexit plus taxed beyond all fairness. I’d rather just get through Brexit for now, the Conservatives have taken us in this direction and should have to see it through until the end.

I don’t feel any party deserves my vote but it’s a vote hard won by women who have gone before me so I would never waste it.

Chocolatelover45 · 27/09/2019 08:48

@crispysausagerolls

Thanks for the discussion anyway

I would rather move to the EU on that we are agreed

crispysausagerolls · 27/09/2019 08:48

I don’t work in finance ☺️

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 08:50

@crispysausagerolls

You're not an arsehole. I had a great upbringing, have enjoyed good health etc and never been out of work but not everybody is so lucky and usually through no fault of their own. Vote Tory by all means, but reducing the huge, Dickensian levels of social inequality is good for us all. I don't want to walk around my local town and see people queuing up at the soup kitchen and elderly people being allowed to wallow in filth because they can't get the care they need. I will be going to the Polls and I believe my reasons for placing my vote are non-selfish. My children will still have a comfortable life if Labour gets in. I just want people to understand that we are not thick for voting Labour as we are often portrayed as. But I do care about people and I do care about society. Have a nice weekend x

Of course, the Jewish press want us to believe he is an antisemite. They don't want the Palestinians to have any rights and most would quite like to have them wiped off the face of the earth

That is one of the most antisemitic things I’ve ever read on here.

ViaSacra · 27/09/2019 09:01

And pulling out the whole ‘my SIL is Jewish so I can’t be antisemitic’ line?

No different to racists who proclaim they have ‘black friends’ or misogynists who say ‘How can I hate women when I’m married to one?’

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 09:09

Read what is happening to these people. Visit the West Bank. They have no right, no life. The water an electric is shut off most of the day. The reason for the mention of the SIL being Jewish is that my husband is an Arab Muslim , she is Jewish, so as you can imagine we have frequent debates about this topic. More so than I'd like to be honest. I also read a lot more about it than is probably healthy. The whole situation is extremely complex but I still stand by my words. I do not believe JC to be anti-semitic but I do believe he cares deeply about human rights. As do I.

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 09:09

apologies for typos - written from phone

TheGoogleMum · 27/09/2019 09:10

Lib dem. I have voted for them before but Labour last time (labour area decent MP). Would never ever vote Tory (I'm an nhs worker, and think any other nhs workers but of Tory ate idiots)

Bazie · 27/09/2019 09:11

@KidLorneRoll

Shut up you twat. I know what makes up the United Kingdom.
You clearly don't know how our parliament works.

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 09:16

@TheGoogleMum
Agree with you.
I think anyone that needs to use the NHS should be voting anyone but Tory Wink

ViaSacra · 27/09/2019 09:18

@itswhereitsat

Saying that the Jewish press in Britain wants to see Palestinians wiped off the face of the earth is:

  1. A lie.
  2. Antisemitic.
TheGoogleMum · 27/09/2019 09:18

Bad autocorrect on my post! Whoops. Meant to finish 'nhs workers voting Tory are idiots'. Of course now I look silly for all the typos! I blame this phone...

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 09:36

@ViaSacra
Granted, overdramatic working, But think what you like.
If we are going to get picky about wording, Semitic actually refers to both Arabs and Jews. So by calling me anti-semitic you are saying that I am anti-Jew and anti arab. I'm married to an Arab and have Arab children so clearly not - or aren't I allowed to mention that I have Arab relations either? Pulling out the card?
Look up 'Jews for Palestine'. Or are they being anti-semitic too for questioning the treatment of the Palestinians?

KidLorneRoll · 27/09/2019 09:42

@Bazie

You seem nice. And you clearly don't know, along with all the other ignorant shit in your post that I couldn't be bothered to comment on.
