General Election tomorrow question

bridgetreilly · 26/09/2019 19:32

So, I did the MN survey and was a bit stumped by the question about who I would vote for if there was an election tomorrow. Like, at the moment, it's hard to remember whether we've still got a government from one day to the next. I know who I normally vote for but right now? Who knows! I'm not sure the results from that question will be all that representative of Mumsnetters normal political preferences.

Antisemite? Really? I'm not and never have been, but you just carry on. I actually knew that as soon as I mentioned Israel I 'd be called an antisemite. It's so predictable. It seems impossible to show any support towards the Palestinians without being accused of being an antisemite. Is it really so impossible to think that someone can support the rights of the Palestinians while STILL respecting the Jewish people, their religion culture and acknowledging the terrible history they've endured? To want both sides to have a safe, secure and prosperous future?

That is why there will never be peace.

Again. I did not call you an antisemite for "supporting the Palestinians."

I called you an antisemite because you accused the entire British Jewish press of being genocidal maniacs who want to see the Palestinian people "wiped off the face of the earth".

ViaSacra · 27/09/2019 10:14

Of course, the Jewish press want us to believe he is an antisemite. They don't want the Palestinians to have any rights and most would quite like to have them wiped off the face of the earth

This statement is antisemitic.

samG76 · 27/09/2019 10:26

It'swhereitsat - virtually the whole of the UK Jewish press wants a two state solution, as you would know if you'd looked. And those that don't would generally get rid of Israel.

As for wiping the Palestinians from the face of the earth, you do know that the Palestinians in Israel are in general wealthier, happier and better educated than citizens of other countries in the region. This doesn't mean they are not discriminated against, but the idea they are going to be subject to mass murder is ridiculous

Whattodoabout · 27/09/2019 10:38

Lib Dem. I always voted for them pre 2010 but started voting Labour until very recently. I just can’t stand by Labour anymore post anti semitism so I’ve switched back to Lib Dem.

I’d only vote Tory if someone held a gun to my head.

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 10:55

As I acknowledge, that was extreme, I shouldn't have worded it that way at all. The Israeli press, like all press has its own bias and many, do not want the Palestinian people to have their own state. Some people would prefer it if the Palestinian people were to leave the Palestinian territories and live in other Arab countries and there are others, that sadly have no compassion for the Palestinians whatsoever and would prefer they didn't exist.

Then there are others that want to find a peaceful solution.
Many, not all within the press to do not want JC to be PM because they feel he will be a threat to Israel. What he really wants is a future for the Palestinian people and an end to the injustice and the killing and loss on both sides. For the Palestinians to have a future, which they don't currently have. But sadly it is always easier to accuse people of antisemitism. Yo've accused me of antisemitism. That I hate Jews. What are you imagining I think of Jewish people? I dread to think. What you are accusing me of makes my blood run cold. I don't hate anyone and I certainly don't hate someone for the colour of the skin or the religion they were born into or choose to practice.

My friend regularly visits the West Bank and works with the children there. She would tell you a very different story. Look them up 'Working with Villages in Palestine'. They are on FB and have a website. I've only been to Israel not the Palestinian territories but the quality of life there sounds appalling from what I have heard from people who have been there. I am actually writing this from a relatively poor part of Upper Egypt which could be described as being in the region. I would not in any way describe the life that the Palestinians are leading as being happier and wealthier.

samG76 · 27/09/2019 11:09

Itswhere - lots of people don't want JC to be PM for all sorts of reasons , including fence sitting over Brexit, bizarre policy on schools (impose VAT on private school fees but also abolish them), strange love of Maduro, the IRA, Iran, etc, as well of course as bizarre wreath laying antics. While you say he wants a stop to killing on both sides, he only ever seems to engage with one side.

The truth is that there's not much that JC could do about the Middle East even if he wanted to, as the UK's influence is pretty small, and for historical reasons we are disliked by both sides.

This I agree with, he has no power to change anything in the Middle East. But I don't believe he is an antisemite. There is a huge difference between anti-semitism vs equality and justice for the Palestinian people.

In addition, not everyone buys into the idea of scrapping uni tuition fees. They're actually essentially a graduate tax (but one you can't dodge by moving overseas) levied on the generally more privileged half of the population and only when they're earning above a certain level. As such, they are a progressive tax and scrapping them - shifting the burden to all taxpayers - is regressive.

At a more personal level, we know someone who worked in an organisation with JC who has observed that his main competence was an ability to shift blame for his own shortcomings onto underlings.

itswhereitsat · 27/09/2019 11:22

@SamG76
I also don't think that JC only wants to engage with one side. I DO think that he is speaking up for the oppressed side because their's is a voice that isn't heard.

Mummyme87 · 27/09/2019 11:25

Lib Dem. usually labour but being a bit tactical and with what has been going on last few years I have moved on

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 27/09/2019 11:29

Labour. Purely because they have the best chance of getting rid of our local MP.

Blibbyblobby · 28/09/2019 12:04

My MP grew up in his constituency, has been a vocal opponent of Bexit and has more than once defied his party's whip to vote for his constituents' interests. I am not a natural voter for his party but I will vote for him.

Davros · 28/09/2019 23:44

Whichever party opposes HS2 the most and whichever party is against self ID which also means they accept that women exist, they are not some social construct

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 28/09/2019 23:49

Lib dems. There's huge gains to be made in the middle ground centrist chasm opened up by Bodge Job and Corbyn

Guavaf1sh · 29/09/2019 00:13

Plaid Cymru. It’s embarrassing being tied to the London government

bumblingbovine49 · 29/09/2019 00:33

Labour. I'd love to see a labour government, particularly this one. I have loved the discussion about ending private education , or at least abolishing charitable status for private schools. I don't have the national horror of socialism ( a democratic socialism) that seems so prevalent in the UK so.would really welcome some of the labour policies.. Then agian I don't think that a federal Europe is necessarily a bad idea ( just as an example of how out of step wit the country I seem to beGrin)

Unfortunately I don't think they have a chance of winning
