To wear doc Martens?

I'm 37, a mum of 3 with a profession job.
I've just bought a pair of the patent black 8 eye.

Is it a bit tragic, mutton dressed as lamb? Or fashionable freedom?
YABU - mutton dressed as lamb
YaNBU - go for it

I LOVE mine! Between my DMs and wellies I don't actually wear any other shoes in the winter 😁

ElspethFlashman · 26/09/2019 16:51

For those who find them expensive, ASOS do them and they do 20% codes quite frequently. Seems about every 6/8 weeks or so. You just have to keep an eye on it as sometimes they're flash sales in the evenings. If you have the app it's easier.

(And needless to say, never buy anything in ASOS in any other currency than £ as their mark up for other currencies is notorious, join Revolut and you can pay in whatever currency you want with no fees, I saved about €50 the last time! #notanad)

Spoonsmum · 26/09/2019 17:01

I too am 37 and have the exact same pair as you. They are my favourite shoes, you can wear them with ANYTHING , I get lots of compliments AND the neat feeling in the works when you’re out for the night watching people struggling along in heels hey can’t walk in while you stroll around in your comfy kick arse boots :)

TheoriginalLEM · 26/09/2019 17:05

I voted YANBU but YABveryU!!!

I'm 49 and love my DMs

I'm the least fashion conscious person I know but i like comfortable shoes that don't look frumpy

Wrybread · 26/09/2019 17:05

ElspethFlashman it took me ages to find out too. I just like being able to replace the soles tbh, so mine last as long as the leather does.

I do have some Docs Flora boots for when I want to look a bit smarter.

For those who find the breaking in tough:

  1. you can get leather softening spray from most shoe shops which you spray on the inside (after using the Dr Martens Balsall on the outside) and then quickly pop them on (with two pairs of socks to prevent blisters) and walk round in them for a couple of hours. It makes a big difference,

  2. Docs do have softer leather ranges (eg Pascal) which aren't the beasts that the normal ones are.

Wrybread · 26/09/2019 17:06

Balsam.....not Balsall Blush

Mrsboombastic99 · 26/09/2019 17:10

DM are a classic! I've been thinking of getting some black ones myself. Go for it!

Dhalandchips · 26/09/2019 17:13

Sorry @shiningstar2, they're a bastard to break in! Blisters guaranteed, but so worth it in the long run Grin

Whattodoabout · 26/09/2019 17:14

It’s all my DH wears. He has the black lace up ones and the Chelsea boots, won’t wear anything else. Go for it! They’re sturdy and last forever.

jacketpotatos · 26/09/2019 17:15

32 and got the same ones for Autumn. Go for it!

hairypaws · 26/09/2019 17:40

I'm 49 and love my docs. Just recently bought a pair of heeled docs and am after the velvet ones for Christmas. Also have my trusty original ones and often wear my daughter's too.

Enjoy them!

cookiemon666 · 26/09/2019 17:50

I love my dm's, have worn them on and off since I was 16. My youngest daughter is following in my footsteps, and wants to wear a pair to her prom. I've also just brought a pair of tie dye harem pants!!

dinello · 26/09/2019 18:37

DMs are for everyone of every age.

Aprillygirl · 26/09/2019 18:58

I'm 43 and bought myself a pair of pink DM's last year to ring the changes from the black ones I usually wear. I love them! Wear what you like, who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2019 19:07

I don't remember having to break mine in. I also had a pair of knee high boots with zips - so comfortable! I did have a pair of ankle boots with heels which gave me a patch of hard skin on the ball of the foot though.

Sunshineandeggshells · 26/09/2019 19:18

I have four pairs and am currently trying to wear a pair in for a friend! I am 38. They suit my style and I love them.

Yellredder · 26/09/2019 19:45

Waaaaaaay older than you! Been wearing them for 30 years - not going to stop now! My oldest pair are about 23 years old and still going strong!

Barmaid101 · 26/09/2019 19:47

Age 30 bought my first pair on my 30th birthday got the polly youth t bar ones and love them! See how long they last in hospitality 🙈

Spied · 26/09/2019 19:49

Clearing out clutter at my mum's I found my black docs 8 eye complete with bright red laces. Last wore them when I was 16. I'm 39 and once I've purchased some black laces I'll be wearing them again.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 26/09/2019 19:50

I'm 37 too and I have a pair of the non laced ones. Had black with purple laces when I was 17.

dollydaydream114 · 26/09/2019 20:25

They're an ageless classic! Anyone can wear them.

CornishMaid1 · 26/09/2019 20:28

I'm a solicitor and my work shoes are black DM shoes. They are the most long lasting and comfortable work shoes I've ever had.

AltheaVestr1t · 26/09/2019 20:31

Love them, so comfy and look great. They are expensive but last forever so ate actually great value. I have wasted so much money on pairs of FLY boots that never lasted more than six months. DMs all the me way for me now.

TooManyPaws · 26/09/2019 20:36

I'm 58 and have several pairs of Docs which I wear to my professional job all the way through the dark half of the year. I wear black leggings, black skirts and tie my Docs to the colour of my top. I've at least three pairs of glitter ones, a holographic pair, and a pair with glow in the dark skeleton feet. A lot of people at work ask which pair I have on that day. They're bliss for my arthritis. I try to get as many as possible in youth sizes which go up to 5 1/2 and have zips down the inside which are great when my feet hurt.

DinoroarDinosaur · 26/09/2019 20:38

I'm 39 and I've got the black patent DMs. They look amazing but my god, they are hell to break in. I've had them for two years and they still hurt my feet like crazy. But that's beside the point because beauty is pain (apparently). So on I persevere.
