To find the unmummsy mum really dreadful

Katex888 · 25/09/2019 23:21

I know she has a lot of fans, and some parts of her first book were funny. Although the second book was dire, why would she need to tell everyone when she has sex with her husband as if it’s once in a year event.

I find her really cringe worthy and I don’t understand the hype. She thinks she’s really funny when she’s not, she’s not unmummsy, she seems like a great mum with her kids but makes out she is rubbish all the time. Why?

I don’t understand how everyone think she’s the funniest thing ever.

This is a cunty thread.

TurquoiseDress · 26/09/2019 18:41

I've got her book in a charity shop, not read it yet!

Going to make a start then maybe read some of this thread...

Drabarni · 26/09/2019 18:44

I haven't a clue about any of this, but what a shame so many women are bitching about others.
A lot of people showing the green eyed monster on here.
I have no interest in the people you talk about, why are others looking at their blogs if they only want to bitch.
Too much time and not enough imagination springs to mind.

BiBiBirdie · 26/09/2019 19:01

I don't think there are any original blogs anymore. It's all been done. The first blog written by a mum I read was way back in 2007.
I think most of them now are so much more interested in being influencers than actual quality writing that is thought provoking and relatable.
And I really can't abide those who revel in being a crap mum either.

Beesandcheese · 26/09/2019 19:13

I deliberately avoid all of the bloggers etc. It's not hard to figure out that they're all a work of fiction/ advertising. I've not noticed this one, but I do avoid the whole "selling a lifestyle" be that by being aspirational or faux "normal".

hsegfiugseskufh · 26/09/2019 19:19

bees i know what youre saying but i dont think unmumsy mum is "selling a lifestyle" at all. She doesnt do much advertising at all either.

Fred578 · 26/09/2019 19:32

I love knee deep in life Grin

ReanimatedSGB · 26/09/2019 20:14

I'm not a huge fan of people who make their kids 'famous' as accessories to their own fame, I would have to say. It can really come back to bite you. And there certainly seem to be some 'parenting' blogs/TV shows which are pretty fucking dubious (though the worst ones are usually American - those 'Hi, we have 36 kids and we are a Good Christian Family, but nobody's allowed to mention the fact that Dad is a wifebeater and at least one of the older boys is a rapists.')

The UK one I found the most annoying and creepy, is Mrs Hinch, though. Not so much the blogger as the way it's marketed - it did come across as very 'Women! Embrace the domestic servitude that is your destiny!' And the environmental impact of all those shitty chemicals isn't great either.

LolaSmiles · 26/09/2019 21:29

A lot of people showing the green eyed monster on here.
Hardly. I hate the jealousy argument on here where someone has an opinion that isn't gushing praise so they must be jealous. It's almost always to shut down women who express opinions.

Some people on this thread have passed comments on their dislike of the instamums brand of "haha I have prosecco", or their feelings on different books, family influencer types

Some people have made some unpleasant personal comments about an individual.

None of those options are driven by jealously

saraclara · 26/09/2019 22:36

I went over to her website out of curiosity. And yep, I really don't like mummyblogs, and people putting their kids out there for public consumption. I didn't find her funny either.

But then I saw her photo of her in her post birth nappy. And I have to give her some kudos for that.

Still don't have the slightest interest in going there again though. I don't get the appeal at all.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 26/09/2019 22:55

I find this thread quite weird. I read a couple of pieces by her and they weren't my cup of tea and I didn't really warm to her writing persona. So I didn't read any more, and that was the end of the matter. I kind of understand why people get annoyed with celebrities who are so ubiquitous that they feel inescapable, but she really doesn't fall into that category.

Drabarni · 26/09/2019 23:02

Lola

I imagine hating it all tbh, I hear the occasional name or read on here, but I haven't got a clue.
Not really interested in becoming influenced as it sounds like many others don't on here. So I don't get involved tbh.

LolaSmiles · 27/09/2019 08:34

Drabarni
It wouldn't cross my mind to start a thread on it, but i quite liked a podcast until I felt the humour was dull and relied on a clichéd portrayal of women. I started reading the book from the OP, found the same issue. I've seen things shared by friends on social media and find it eye rolling territory and at times quite annoying.

But there's no green eyed monster. I just don't like what I've seen. Like you, ive no desire to take an active interest in being influenced by people with a carefully curated image of motherhood (especially one done enough that people will claim it's not curated, they're just sharing their life).

It wa dthe jealousy I angle I found a bit off as if someone couldn't dislike something without being jealous

IrmaFayLear · 27/09/2019 10:05

Drabarni - it's all very well to say that you don't have to get involved, move along, nothing to see etc etc BUT have you seen the number of subscribers all these instagrammers/podcasters/vloggers/bloggers get? It's unbelievable. And aside from advertising, there is payment for number of hits over a certain amount (quite large!).

And, beyond the numbers, many of these subscribers are true fans . They lap up every word/picture and defend their idol to the hilt. It is an odd phenomenon and can be seen a bit here: posters wildly defending someone they have never met in the manner of a tweenager ready to die for a pop star.

Benes · 27/09/2019 10:37

Not everyone is wildly defending her. Personally I couldn't care less what she does or why.

Some people object to people starting anonymous posts just to slag off an identifiable individual. It's shitty behaviour.....and I'd say that whoever the intended target was. You don't have to be a fan of someone to recognise mean spirited, bitchy behaviour.

There's a post about Princess Beatrice which is as equally shitty.

Katex888 · 27/09/2019 12:20

She’s still unfunny...

OP posts:
hsegfiugseskufh · 27/09/2019 12:24

no kate you think she is unfunny.

Many people disagree.

ToffeePennie · 27/09/2019 12:42

Yeah I don’t “get” her branding or package or whatever. Her humour is way off base for me.
I don’t like her book and I don’t read her blogs or follow her Facebook.
Gill Simms however, (Peter and Jane, why mummy swears, judgey dog and billy cooper) is brilliant and I adore her novels.
I think it comes down to taste. For example I can’t stand Mrs hinch, I think she’s absolutely crackers, but loads of people on the school run swear she’s a genius.

Drabarni · 27/09/2019 12:44

Irma
Great for them, I'm glad people get joy from them.
I know I wouldn't, so don't bother.
My point here is why start a thread about something you don't like, just to bitch about somebody?

LarryDuff · 27/09/2019 12:48

Fair enough if you don't find her funny, you don't really expect everyone to like the same things though do you? I cringe at Michael Mcintyre but millions of people seem to like him.

Regarding the name 'unmumsy' you can't have a go at that ffs it's probably something she came up with while writing blogs read by 5 people but just stuck with it as her following grew plus PP gives a good explanation of why she choose it in the first place.

YABU please give us a list of the amazingly hilarious things you like to read so we can properly judge you

Katex888 · 27/09/2019 13:21

Everyone needs to relax, she’s not going to shag you guys.

OP posts:
SoyDora · 27/09/2019 19:18

she’s not going to shag you guys

Really? Damn.

ChristmasInJuly · 27/09/2019 19:38

I liked her first two books, her honesty and the fact that she doesn’t do many #ads. I don’t like how smug she is about hypnobirthing now, and how she is one of the “insta mum gang” when she used to be so real and authentic.
If she’s helped women through PND, however, then fair play.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 30/09/2019 14:31
