My DD's first boyfriend is transgender and I feel weird about it.

I've always been a very liberal minded person. Supported gay rights all my life. My best friend and DN are gay. I support the rights of Trans people to live their life etc.

My dd15 has a nice group of friends (boys and girls). In that group is a Trans teen (Female to Male). He changed his name in Y8, He's totally accepted as Male at school. There are no issues. He looks completely Male and people who don't know him would never think that he'd been born female. He's a nice boy who is well liked. All good.

Except last night my DD told me she's going out with him. I've surprised myself that this has unnerved me.

My dd hasn't had a BF before. She's only ever snogged one boy before at a party. She says she's 100% straight. She says she fancies the cool older boys in Sixth Form. Has teenage celebrity crushes on boys like Tom Holland etc. So how does this work for her?

Last night I told her all was fine and just to be careful they didn't damage a friendship if they broke up etc, but I didn't make a big deal of it.

Would you find this weird if your dc said they were straight? Please be honest. I'm kind of hoping it fizzles out without any drama.

Cross posted - no hate? Really? There's a heck of a lot deleted really unpleasant posts earlier to the point the early thread posts is a bit Swiss cheese like.
But no, no hate here.
No, not a one Confused Biscuit

I won't debate with any of you - but I will stand up and call a bigot a bigot.

So yes, you say it to try and shutdown debate...

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:22

Clearly it doesn't work as, as you say more and more people are questioning what is actually going on.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:24

You have no argument, other than "asking questions is bigotted shut up."

peachgreen · 25/09/2019 08:24

So yes, you say it to try and shutdown debate...

Oh, if only! I've seen enough of it to know there's no shutting you lot down!

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 25/09/2019 08:25

I dont doubt that some people on mn are transphobic

But not all...and loads of them WONT be on the FWR board

And lots of posters on the FWR board aren’t transphobic or bigoted...so making out that everyone on the board is transphobic or bigoted is absolutely attempting to close down discussions

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:26

Stereotypes are damaging, telling a girl with short hair who likes train they are a boy is re-enforcing those stereotypes.

How is this child a boy, other than they like "boy stereotypes"?

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:28

No, and as I pointed out above the tactic you are trying by shouting bigot is actually having to opposite effect and getting more people to ask questions.

FamilyOfAliens · 25/09/2019 08:29

Oh, if only! I've seen enough of it to know there's no shutting you lot down!

But if people who disagree with your views are bigots and their opinions are hateful, all you have to do is report their posts and they’ll be removed. Leaving the ones that aren’t bigoted and hateful, and surely you have enough good arguments to counter those posts? Go on, give it a try.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/09/2019 08:30

And posta get deflected because people complain a lot, sometimes in droves.

peachgreen · 25/09/2019 08:30

How? How is me pointing out bigotry shutting down your debate? I wish it could, but I just don't have that power. Hell, Kirk above me is saying that I'm getting more people involved and getting them to ask questions! You can't have it both ways.

ReanimatedSGB · 25/09/2019 08:32

There used to be - and still are, unfortunately - people who believe that there's Scientific Truth to the extent that those of different ethnic groups shouldn't date. Because members of the 'other' ethnic group are likely to be dangerous or bad. So yeah, my teenager dating one of them is OK if it's one of the 'nice' ones, but it's important that they know the truth that people like their nice partner are more likely to be dangerous or bad... Oh yeah, and no matter what the nice ones call themselves, I'll stick to using terms I've been told are upsetting because SCIENTIFIC TRUTH, oh no, not bigotry and completely fucking unnecessary rudeness at all.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:32

You can't have it both ways.

Two different posters with two different opinions on your post is not someone "trying to have it both ways"

FamilyOfAliens · 25/09/2019 08:32

Attempting to shut down debate, peach.

Not succeeding.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 25/09/2019 08:33

Stands up and applauds @peachgreen
What you just said!
All of it.
It is.
It's an echo chamber, and as you said absolutely no discussion (found that out to my cost)
Never again as you said, best left to it.
At least when it leaks out onto here it gives some hope that majority people aren't bigoted etc and yes I've noticed goes challenged more out here.
I'm like you - will call out now but I've had it with "discussion" as you say there's just none with some.

FamilyOfAliens · 25/09/2019 08:34

You do know there’s more than one scientific theory, don’t you, reanimated?

Grin
FamilyOfAliens · 25/09/2019 08:35

I'm like you - will call out now but I've had it with "discussion" as you say there's just none with some.

So your arguments don’t stand up to scrutiny then.

FamilyOfAliens · 25/09/2019 08:36

Anyway, off to work now.

Thanks, bigot-hunters - it’s been real.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:38

I've had it with "discussion" as you say there's just none with some.

This is a discussion board. It's designed so people can talk and debate with each other.

This is the section of the site that is designed to air disagreements and cause debate.

peachgreen · 25/09/2019 08:38

But if people who disagree with your views are bigots and their opinions are hateful, all you have to do is report their posts and they’ll be removed.

That's not how internet forums work. The posts that get deleted (and there are a lot of them) are those that break the Talk guidelines. You can be transphobic and bigoted without breaking the Talk guidelines.

Thanks @Wotcha. I'll never venture onto FWR again - it's just not worth it. I've found better forums to discuss feminist issues on.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 25/09/2019 08:38

Rufus - no, all the FWR isn't bigoted.
Do I really have to do not all FWR is like that?
NAFALT?! Grin
It is an echo chamber.
Other views aren't tolerated.
Whatever you might think.
A hardcore handful of cheerleaders on there definitely are the b word though and that's why it needs challenging, as it spreads

Bezalelle · 25/09/2019 08:38

Why is it bigotry to call a female a female, and a male a male?

Is it bigotry to call a zebra a zebra, and a horse a horse?

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:41

Feminism boards are pro women... Shock.

LGBT boards are more centered on LGBT matters... Shock...

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 25/09/2019 08:42

This board is designed for bearing subject... Shock

Boo boo nobody is keeping to their little box so they are all bigots.
