To think there’s no point in saving Thomas Cook because no one will book with them now anyway

Obviously I hope all those currently abroad and already booked are brought home quickly and / or compensated but what’s the point in them carrying on

I'm not surprised this has happened. I've said for the past few years I thi k more and more travel companies will go bust. They've become greedy with extortionate prices in the school hols. £5k for 10 days in majorca?

I wouldn't. I think now we have the internet to people realise how much travel agents sting you. We are going to a four star all inclusive hotel in Lanzarote next year for a week and booked the hotel online and direct flights from easyJet, total is 1600. Same hotel but Thomas Cook flights on their website was 2,200.

No way. My friends dm has been locked in a hotel in Tunisia and they are refusing to let anyone out until they pay their bill as thomas cook hasn't paid them. She has no idea how or when they are getting home.

I have a friend who works in one of their branches. Their bookings for yesterday were equivalent to the same day last year.

@ballsdeep I don't know how people with kids afford to go on holiday. I went with a friend and her kids a few years ago. The exact same holiday a few days later out of school hols was £650 per person cheaper. Taking the piss.

It absolutely does take the piss and I think with the emergence of air b nb and the like, people can do holidays for much cheaper. I wouldn't be surprised if many more fold quickly

they lower the prices in the low seasons, when the demand is much lower. Who would chose to go on holiday in the colder months if it wasn't cheaper? People want to go away in the summer, at Christmas, and in the school holidays .Prices go up.

Holidays or not, it happens to be much cheaper to go on a beach holiday in the winter than in the summer.

I have kids. I have made the most of cheap holidays before them, and will do again once they leave schools. It's so childish to blame companies like that.

Thomas Cook doesn't offer terribly attractive holidays to be honest.

I think a bailout is pointless. It won't make them more profitable or make people book with them. It's just prolonging the inevitable, sadly :(

cookie, I hope your friend's mum gets home soon. It's standard practice for hotels to be paid after the stay, so it's not that Thomas Cook hasn't paid the hotel, it's that they're panicking they won't see the money when it does become due. That's no reason to hold guests hostage though, and should be a warning to anyone thinking of going to Tunisia.

also you have abta protection. The people in the biggest mess over Thomas Cook are the ones that booked everything separately and NOT through a travel agent.
The media have a lot to answer for because their scaremongering means that people won't book. If nothing had been said, and Thomas Cook had created a flash sale they may have taken enough money to save it.
If that's another airline gone it could push prices up not down.

No I wouldn't. We haven't done a package holiday, for quite a few years due to costs. I have found Thomas cook flights to be very affordable this year but we haven't booked with them because of the worry of this happening, which obviously, if everyone does the same, makes things worse for them. I hope they don't go under

Oh dear, fewer people will be able to fly if they go bust. Given all the recent publicity around climate change, surely this is a good thing. I'm not sure it would show the government care about climate change if they step in to save the country. This is one they have to let go under.

I agree with you. They either go bust this week or next year due to consumers having no faith in them and collapse through lack of bookings. It's inevitable one way or another.

I agreed with PP the who have said that more companies will go bust purely because they have been greedy. I for one have booked our last two holidays independently and it’s so easy and much cheaper.

I begrudge every fucking penny of public money used to bail out these private businesses whose greed profits a very few who run away with millions. Sick of that shit. Fuck 'em. Let 'em go to the wall.

The one an only time I booked with Thomas Cook, the hotel gave me food poisoning. Thompson's or self organised with someone like Expedia / Air BnB are my go to.

I don't understand why they get preferential treatment when hundreds of private business are going under everyday without bailouts.
