AIBU Greta Thunberg?

AIBU to ask everyone who can to get behind Greta Thunberg, even if only online, as she's now getting a lot a lot a lot of hate. She clearly threatens people - especially her polar opposites, men, rich old men, powerful men (did I mention men?). Let's all give her the lurve and support she needs.
So on FB I challenged one just now - Why are you attacking a young woman? - and he disappeared. Funny, that.

Qual it will encourage people to do small things that’s the point

This thread is terrifying. I know AIBU attracts gutter posts but it’s probably not that as it’s the same stuff on any thread about the environment

I look forward to the day people with these views are gone and next generation are up next. No wonder they’re cross knowing what is said.

Frosties567 · 23/09/2019 20:37

I thought her speech was delivered with venom and gained little respect from me.
She’s so anti the older generation it’s unnerving. I’m not sure who she’s referring to. People in their 30s 40s 50s? Who knows.
There’s better ways of delivering such an important message.
I wouldn’t be surprised if she has alienated a large group of the population with her hate filled speech.
There are plenty of people in ‘the older generation’ who care very deeply about the environment.

OooErMissus · 23/09/2019 20:40

It doesn't really matter what jaded too-cool-for-school Mumsnetters think about Greta.

The numbers on the marches speak for themselves.

No-one else in history has managed to mobilise humankind on this scale, in such a short space of time.

OooErMissus · 23/09/2019 20:41

There’s better ways of delivering such an important message.

Do it, then.

It is pitiful

The shittiness of people eh

Jellykat · 23/09/2019 20:44

I think she is to be completely admired, representing the younger generation who will inherit the shit, and making climate change a talking point.

..And anyone who denies climate change is ignorant, it is all around us everyday.. presumably those who cant see it are too busy gazing at their mobiles or some such, rather then observing what is happening.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 23/09/2019 20:44

I’ve a right to be jaded, I’m 56.

Poor Greta looks jaded and she’s only 16.
Perhaps the people writing her speeches can take her place & allow Greta a childhood.

DoctorAllcome · 23/09/2019 20:46

@QualCheckBot
“What would make a huge difference is doing small things that are within our control right now better.”

Exactly. I know I’m doing my part. Not just as an individual but through career choice. I have worked on R&D of space and airborne IR sensors that can detect forest fires before any human watcher in a tower can. I have worked on R&D of RO desalinisation water technology and built water plants that can cheaply and supply unlimited fresh water from the sea- powered by tide and wind turbines.

Climate change comes with environmental risks, risks of forest fires, scarcity of fresh water....etc.

Its like what JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” (only I put in “humanity” for “your country” )

I have nothing but admiration for Greta. She lives by her ethos.
I do feel sorry for her due to her youth and worry about her being out of her depth and all the hate going her way.

Vivianebrookskoviak · 23/09/2019 20:50

She's chosen to do what she does so surely she must know she's going to come up against resistance and get hatred from certain corners?
I know she's an activist but that's about it, I'm not an environmentalist myself so if others want to support her that's up to them.
ExReb? Weren't those are the people who some of their protesters have just been sentenced for blocking the M5 stopping ambulances and emergency services getting through?
Angry

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 20:50

Why are you people so sure other people aren’t making similar choices off the back of increased awareness and talk about the topic?

More people. More than there would be if no one talked about it as they are.

Jellykat · 23/09/2019 20:51

dirty I am exactly the same age as you, so cant see how your age is any justification, sorry..

DoctorAllcome · 23/09/2019 20:53

@MarshaBradyo
“This thread is terrifying. I know AIBU attracts gutter posts...”

I hope you are not referring to my posts regarding the near uselessness and counterproductive dangers of protests?
You see I’d rather put my head down and actually help solve problems than scream in the streets for a messiah.

Dr Why don’t you stop going on about people doing nothing other than screaming in the streets

The two are not mutually exclusive.

coatlessinspokane · 23/09/2019 20:55

FGS then she's obviously not talking about those people is she?

Poor Greta looks jaded and she’s only 16.

Well she's a bit pissed off I guess, what with the the prospect of mass extinction and all.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 23/09/2019 20:59

I have to laugh at people who get annoyed at XR for "delaying their commute" or "blocking some cars". If the climate crisis goes down how it's predicted to, it will be like WW3. Billions of people flooding into countries that still have a liveable climate. Mass food, water and electricity shortages. That will mean people fighting on the streets, bin diving, having to have weapons to defend against people invading your home and robbing your food supplies. It sounds like a shitty American dystopia film but that will be reality.

But sorry that your commute got delayed.

Above comment also goes for the daily towel washers who call people "disgusting" for re-wearing clothes. Your grandchildren may be washing their tatty clothes in a river with a bar of soap, after 100 wears.

Off topic, but does anyone see a resemblance between Greta Thunberg and a female Stephen Merchant?

Chatt3rb0x · 23/09/2019 21:00

“Allow Greta a childhood” she’s 16.

It was the M32 but they did block a public highway so it would have made the jobs of the emergency services a lot more difficult, people who really don't need people changing themselves to bathtubs in their way and their actions could have costs lives as a result.

I do know how to use Google thank you but although I admit I had parts of the story wrong they were delaying the journeys of the emergency services when time is crucial in their roles.

Do you realise the consquences for people? Like getting wage cut and simply cant afford it. Because they werenr there to do the hours.

And who else uses the roads?
