AIBU Greta Thunberg?

AIBU to ask everyone who can to get behind Greta Thunberg, even if only online, as she's now getting a lot a lot a lot of hate. She clearly threatens people - especially her polar opposites, men, rich old men, powerful men (did I mention men?). Let's all give her the lurve and support she needs.
So on FB I challenged one just now - Why are you attacking a young woman? - and he disappeared. Funny, that.

Oh the irony. The OP posts on here asking people to get behind Greta Thunberg as she's getting a lot of hate, and the MN vipers pile in with more hate, disguised as 'concern.'

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 19:45

I suppose it’s not surprising as it was posted in AIBU catnip to people who will have a go

On her way to UN. Nervous breakdown hardly. Impassioned during her speech definitely.

We are up shit creek, think she has a right to show emotion. Where was the memo that climate change speeches have to be devoid of emotion?

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 19:47

I dont dislike or hate her.

I am concerned for her. I have always suspected that, whilst she is clearly an intelligent young woman, she is being heavily influence to be the 'face' of climate change protests.

I do think she needs support and help. I do hope when has people who hold her mental and physical health as their priority.

Chatt3rb0x · 23/09/2019 19:48

Why does she need support?

JocastaJones · 23/09/2019 19:49

Yes having any electronic communications as a tool is not net zero. But we have them...namely the WWW anyway. It is up and running and using that energy anyway- whether we do a petition or not. Adding the facility to do online petitions does not add to the carbon footprint. It is a net zero addition.

Sorry that's just not true. Anything that is stored on a server or in the cloud is using energy, including websites and petitions related to the environmental movement. There are huge server farms providing storage for our data, and using up lots of electricity. That's why we're encouraged to delete old emails as an environmental act. Whether online communication is better or worse than paper based I have no idea.

grumiosmum · 23/09/2019 19:50

Impassioned and emotional, remember she has autism and autistic people sometimes struggle to express their emotions the same way as neuro-typical people.

Her speech to the UN is the biggest platform she's ever had. That's pretty intense for anyone, let along a 16 year old girl.

I have to make a speech to 30 politicians tomorrow and I've had sleepless nights for about a week!

I hope she gets the Nobel peace prize.

Nettie1964 · 23/09/2019 19:50

People are always mean social media and all that. But totally get why it really gets on people's tits. Sanctimonious boring little shits.her generation use so many devices never waked to school, enjoy foreign holidays huge consumers of everything. Dressed in every new fashion and are so right on it makes anyone grumpy just into a climet change denier😁

RubbingHimSourly · 23/09/2019 19:51

Chart in which way does she not look fragile ?? Appearing exhausted on a stage, in tears, tripping over her words and announcing that worrying about the planet had destroyed her childhood doesn't seem particularly healthy to me.

She also has Autism, people who have Autism can become unhealthily obsessed. To the point that it unbalances their mental state.

My DS also has Autism, he developed an unhealthy obsession with Alexa. As in he'd only talk via Alexa and referred to it for everything. We monitored it, we brought in boundaries and times where he could use Alexa to communicate and how he has to ask first. We brought in the rule that he could only use Alexa to talk to his dad and I so it was capped so to speak. Otherwise it would have spiralled and his life would have been very limited

Greta Thunberg is a prime example of a person who has Autism and has had no limit put on their focussed thought. It isn't healthy and it won't end well.

MarshaBradyo · 23/09/2019 19:52

Great post Nettie 😂 god it gets worse am laughing

grumiosmum · 23/09/2019 19:52

@Nettie1964 who do you think they learned it from?

That's a whole generation you're castigating there. Are there any exceptions?

Saucery · 23/09/2019 19:52

I was concerned about her appearance today. Not in a dramatic concern-Troll way. Just as a parent myself, seeing her look so frail and on the edge. It wasn’t pleasant to watch and it certainly wasn’t inspiring. I hope that level of near-hysteria was an act tbh, for her sake.

If I was giving a speech I’d be tripping over my words, my voice always shakes if speaking public ally. She regards her autism as her superpower. I don’t think it’s fair to write her off because she has autism. Autism has such a big spectrum and varies in how it manifests itself.

Ratcatcher9 · 23/09/2019 19:57

She is amazing. But I too am worried about her. Sometimes great people also battle great difficulties and she seems to be taking this all too much on herself. She needs to be take a rest from it, or be taken for a rest if she won't do it herself.

coatlessinspokane · 23/09/2019 19:58

Of course the suffragettes had a massive effect. They brought the issue into the public consciousness, just as anti-slavery campaigners did.

Civil Rights in the US, Indian Independence, all these movements benefited from mass demonstrations which raised awareness and put pressure on governments.

Of course there are other reasons and I'm sure the Tories did want to mitigate the potential revolutionary effects, (they've never exactly had women's best interests at heart,) but they would also never admit to being influenced by a mass movement like the suffragettes because that would give them too much credit.

Just like now, if Trump were to suddenly pledge to cut emissions he wouldn't ever admit to bowing to pressure, or to being influenced by what is (sadly) mostly a left-wing movement because that would be embarrassing for him.

123chocolate · 23/09/2019 20:01

Nothing special about her. Huge pr stunt.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 23/09/2019 20:02

There are lots of times when huge protests still did fuck all. Iraq and student fees being 2 examples.

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 20:05

Why does she need support?
Because for a start she is a 16 year old girl with the worlds eyes on her.

I think it's quite clear when she needs support. That doesnt make her less of a good person. I am not implying that.

Why do people get so arsey over people expressing she needs a good support system.

Chatt3rb0x · 23/09/2019 20:07

Maybe she already has a good support system.Hmm

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 20:07

It's quite well known that the suffragette movement wasnt really getting anywhere until world war one broke out and the aftermath of it.

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 20:08

Maybe she already has a good support system.

And I simply said I hoped she did. Was asked why she would need support an answer.

Jesus wept people so precious now they get offended at someone saying they hope someone has a support system.

We need to seize rainforests with the same fervour we exercised seizing oilfields in 1991 and 2003

This is seriously unhinged stuff. You want to invade other countries? Blocking Brazilian Beef, I could get behind. But not this level of crazy.

But the idea that the world can live a western standard of living is absurd and wrong

It is not. They can, and they will whether you like it or not.

glennamy · 23/09/2019 20:13

She is being used by people who should know better if her conditions are to be believed. Her parents are hard left political activists and like today's preaching, are writing her speeches for her for hard hitting diatribe headlines! Political BS of the highest order!
